Active shooter reported at Mississippi State campus

QuoteA man is in custody after an active shooter alert at Mississippi State University Thursday morning.

Phu-Qui Cong "Bill" Cong Nguyen, a freshman at MSU from Madison, MS, was taken into custody by MSU Police after reports of an active shooter on campus.

According to Sid Salter, chief communications officer with MSU, a Maroon Alert went out at 10:15 a.m. of a possible shooter on campus.

Salter said no shots were fired, despite reports on social media. Salter said law enforcement will continue to "sweep" classrooms but an "all clear" has been issued.

Nguyen, majoring in computer enginnering, lived in a residence hall on campus, Salter said. He was described as "suicidal" by police at an afternoon press conference.

And though Nguyen created quite a stir on campus, he only faces a misdemeanor charge since he was not actually armed.

Rice said Nguyen was threatening suicide and also threatening to harm other students. Same day, different school, a student did have a loaded gun and used it in a threatening manner. The school's security team did not choose to issue a Norse Alert:
