Hewitt-Trussville's Myles Mason flips from 1 SEC West team to another

QuoteHewitt-Trussville athlete Myles Mason still plans to play college football in the SEC West. He just won't do it at Mississippi State.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Mason de-committed from the Bulldogs on Monday and instead committed to Arkansas.

Mason originally committed to the Bulldogs in October under former coach Dan Mullen's staff.

"He committed under the previous staff, but Mississippi State was still recruiting Myles hard," Hewitt-Trussville coach Josh Floyd said. "Arkansas came in right before Christmas and offered and got him up for a visit and he obviously loved it up there."

He will likely play safety in college.

"That is the position most people have him penciled in at," Floyd said. "I think he could play running back as well. He's that talented of a guy. He's big, physical and can really run. Myles looks like safeties are supposed to look like in the SEC. I would expect him to keep getting better and better, and he will probably gain some weight as well."

Floyd said Arkansas' hire of defensive coordinator John Chavis also may have played a role in Mason's flip.

"I think that was a big deal to him," Floyd said. "Coach Chavis and those guys have sent a lot of folks to the NFL, and that excites him."

4-star OL Tank Jenkins saves last visit for SEC West school

QuoteTime is running out for Park Crossing offensive lineman Tank Jenkins to make his college decision, but the 6-foot-3, 330-pounder has a simple plan once he returns home from visiting Ole Miss this weekend.

"I'm going to sit down at the table and talk about it with my mom and figure out what's the best home for me," Jenkins said earlier this week at the Mr. Football announcement in Montgomery.

Jenkins, a four-star prospect, visited Oklahoma and Texas A&M earlier this month and plans to visit Ole Miss this weekend. Perhaps coaches from all three schools should pay as much attention Jenkins' mom as they do to him.

Rebels will get the last shot at wooing Jenkins, a massive lineman who is projected to play guard after spending his high school career at tackle. He plans to sign Wednesday, also known as National Signing Day.

Ole Miss has commitments from two other Montgomery area players - the Lee-Montgomery duo of defensive back Jakory Hawkins and linebacker Kevontae Ruggs. Vestavia Hills outside linebacker/safety Jonathan Hess, Eufaula defensive lineman Ka'Darian Hill, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa linebacker Jacquez Jones and St. Clair County defensive lineman Jalen Cunningham all signed in December.

A&M has made a late push for Jenkins, becoming a possibility after Jimbo Fisher's move from Florida State to College Station. Jenkins said he's had a relationship with Fisher for years and said Florida State was one of the first schools to offer him a scholarship.

Jenkins won the Class 6A Lineman of the Year award earlier this week and finished fifth in Mr. Football voting.

Arkansas' chief advantage over competition in landing DE Dorian Gerald

QuoteGerald (6-foot-3, 260 pounds) is a 4-star prospect and the No. 1 JUCO defensive end recruit in the class, according to ESPN. He chose the Hogs over Texas A&M while also holding offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and others.

"The recruiting process, to me, was all about relationships," Gerald told Brandon Dunn of ABC 15 Sports. "I was committed to Tennessee. I felt like I had the best relationship with those guys, but they left. The next school up was Texas A&M and coach John Chavis. We had been building a huge relationship. He moved to Arkansas, brought a great staff with him and I just felt it was best."

Signing Gerald should help alleviate concerns about Chavis, at age 61 in his 39th year of coaching, as a recruiter. Arkansas desperately needed a pass-rushing defensive end in its 2018 class. The Chief had one month to secure such a player — with many options off the board after the early signing period — and he signed arguably the best available player.

"They want me to come in to contribute and make an immediate impact," Gerald said "They don't really go the JUCO route unless they need someone to come in and play right away and that's their huge need because they are transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3."

AM | Kardell Thomas shut down his recruitment.

Then #Bama coach Nick Saban delivered him a message: "We're going to flip you."

#LSU & Ed Orgeron must fight off outside suitors for a talented 2019 haul - and it's already begun

QuoteKardell Thomas shut down his recruitment two weeks ago.

If you're unclear what that means, don't worry. It is an oft-used term in the peculiar world of college football recruiting. A prospect uses the phrase to emphasize his commitment to a certain school — in this case, LSU. It is a message to all others that he's uninterested in visiting their campuses or speaking to their coaches.

"110% A TIGER thanks to all the schools that recruited me," Thomas' message on Twitter proclaimed.

Thomas, a Southern Lab lineman and the top-ranked guard in the 2019 class, figured his announcement would slow the pursuit from other programs.

"That's made everyone come harder," Thomas laughed during an interview earlier this week.

Alabama coach Nick Saban himself delivered a message after his announcement: "We're going to flip you," it said.

Texas A&M offensive line coach Jim Turner reached out with one, too: "We're coming even harder now."

Heck, one day after the announcement, Auburn offered Thomas a scholarship.

"I was like, 'What?!' " Thomas said.

"I saw you shut your recruitment down," the Auburn coach told him. "We don't care."

Welcome to the weird world of college football recruiting.

This is a microcosm of the battle that awaits LSU coach Ed Orgeron in the fight against programs trying to poach members of Louisiana's 2019 class, one of the most talent-rich in-state groups in recent years.

Thomas is carrying a proverbial purple-and-gold banner for an already ballyhooed 2019 class in Louisiana, pointing these highly rated guys toward LSU's campus. The Louisiana 2019 class is one Orgeron has talked up for months. The group is rife with talent, specifically at the top, recruiting grades confirm.

Three prospects in the state are, as of now, rated five stars, the highest classification for any recruit. Just 29 players in 247Sports' 2019 composite player rankings have such designations. Louisiana's current five-star trio includes the 6-4, 320-pound Thomas, Amite defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher and Dunham cornerback Derek Stingley.

Priority LSU QB target Grant Gunnell reopens recruitment

Quote6-foot-6, 212-pound quarterback recently made an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge for the Tigers' elite junior day function in January.

A divorce between Gunnell and the Aggies appeared imminent after the hiring of Jimbo Fisher, who instantly made offers to a handful of dual-threat quarterback prospects when he arrived in College Station, Texas. That includes 4-star Alabama quarterback James Foster, who committed to A&M over LSU on Signing Day earlier this month.

Ed Orgeron and Co. failed to land a quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class, leaving only sophomore Myles Brennan, junior Justin McMillan and redshirt freshman Lowell Narcisse on the roster.

Is LSU still in the mix with elite QB Grant Gunnell?

QuoteLSU is very much in contention with elite Texas quarterback Grant Gunnell. In a recent interview with SEC Country, Gunnell indicated that both coach Ed Orgeron and new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger are communicating with him on a daily basis. Orgeron texts daily with messages along the lines of "Geaux Tigers."

The early front-runners for the 2019 U.S. Army All-American include LSU, Ohio State, Arkansas and Oklahoma State. There is no reason to believe that Gunnell has a leader.

Birmingham LB chooses Dabo Swinney over Nick Saban

QuoteJackson-Olin linebacker Vonta Bentley plans to be a Clemson Tiger.

Bentley, a 6-foot, 220-pound senior, committed to Clemson today, picking the ACC powerhouse over offers from Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn and others.

Bentley transferred from Parker to Jackson-Olin in January, and his recruiting profile took off after receiving an Oregon offer. He was then offered scholarships by Alabama and Auburn on the same day.

QuoteCentral-Phenix City senior running back A'montae Spivey will play his college football in the toughest division in the nation.

6-foot-1, 205-pound Spivey rushed for 944 yards and 14 touchdowns on 74 carries in 2017. He also caught a touchdown pass.

He is currently ranked No. 39 on the 247 composite rankings for seniors in Alabama. His other offers included LSU, Missouri, South Alabama, Troy and Purdue.

Spivey dedicated his decision to his late grandmother.

Spivey joins Central QB Peter Parrish and safety Ray Thornton as seniors already committed to Power 5 schools.
