According to Bo Bounds (ESPN Radio) Texas A&M is a sleeping giant in the SEC that should take over the minute Saban steps away, but is being held back by Sumlin. He believes that if they were able to get a great coach to go along with those strong recruiting classes, they'll be making SEC Championship runs, possibly even National Championship runs. What do you guys think?

They're Aggies, enough said.

Well that's not a huge stretch with the talent pool they have. However, with Saban no longer in the west things are wide open. Many think there will be more parity than there is now...if that comes to fruition then every week is an unbelievable grind

I agree with him, as much as I hate to say it. And as much as I hate to say this even more, the better job and opportunity is at Texas. If Herman is any kind of a recruiter and coach, they will be back in the top 10 in no time.

Have heard this since they stop being the old army college.  They do get talent.  Used to say the same about Clemson.   But unlike A&M, Clemson had won a post integration NC.

I've always thought Sumlin was overrated.  No reason to play soft with their recruiting and ability to get defensive talent and oline talent. Yet their offense negatively affects their defense.

Don't see a dynasty in SEC post Saban.  Resources recruiting coaching and talent will keep it too competitive.
Quote from: MaconBacon on March 22, 2018, 10:30:04 amWe had a good run in the 90's and one NC and now the whole state still laments that we are a top seed program and have kids standing in line to come to good ole Arkansas.  We're just a flash in the pan boys.

Ags beat Bama in average game attendance according to this thread, which surprised me.

I know they have a lot of money and recruits over there, but they also seem to be able to pull defeat from the jaws of victory a lot of the time.

I just want to beat them in our game this year. The 5-year losing streak to the Ags is too long!

hawganatic

Well first of all Bama isn't going to start regressing the minute Saban steps down.   He's built a machine that is going to take several years after he leaves to deconstruct.  I wouldn't be surprised if Swinney moves over to Bama when Saban does step down and keeps it rolling for another decade.

As far as A&M, they have the resources and the talent pool.  There is no reason for them to not be in the top 5-10 every year.  If they do the same as they have the last few years with the late season fade, I suspect Sumlin will be gone.  We just need to pray they don't make a great hire and they keep on with the same.

Herman making Texas a national power again and pulling some of those Texas recruits away from A&M is one of the best things that can happen for us and the other teams in the SEC West.

A&M has been a sleeping giant longer than they've had a football team.  At some point, they're not a sleeping giant until proven otherwise.

Aggies have been the sleeping giant since the 1930s. They occasionally look like they will live up to it, then fall back into being Aggies.

I live down here in Horn and Aggie land ( and actually graduated from UT way back in the early 80s) and believe that it will take the horns longer than most think to get back to a consistently higher level of play.  The reason is that it's been 7-8 years since they have had any success which translates into the fact that juniors and seniors in HS were in 3rd-4th grade at that time and all they've known since is second rate play.  It's going to take several years of winning and accolades to get the players in this state back on the UT bandwagon.  The Ags have consistently recruited higher level athletes ( in all sports ) than have the horns and are just one SEC championship away from being dominant year over year.  If Sumlin leaves, I still believe that the Ags are light years ahead of the horns in talent and potential. The luster of the horns of old just isn't there with local HS players / coaches as it was 10 years ago.

to steal a line from hedley lamarr, "I hate that cliche".   Sips and TAMU have all the resources in the world but only won NC in  1963, 1969, 1970, 2005 for Texas and A&M in 1919, 1927 and 1939.    How can they have 1 national championship between the two of them in past 47 years with all the money, fan base, alumni base, and facilities to go along with a major talent base in their backyard (east Texas/Louisiana)?

I believe A$M will continue to be a sleeping Giant until Texas or Oklahoma join the SEC.  Then they are reclassified as sleeping only.

I mean, name a single school where that isn't true. If you are pulling in top recruiting classes and have a top coach, you are going to be a top contender. If Vandy was able to get a coach with top 15 classes year in and year out, that was able to develop and coach on game day, they'd be a contender for the SEC and even some natty's. In that regard, they too are a sleeping giant.

Where the author of the article goes wrong, IMO, is the assumption that the recruiting is inherent to the program there. That all the aggies have to do is find a better x's and o's coach and they are there and assumes there'll be no dropoff in recruiting. However, that is not a given. Their recruiting was not as good under the previous coach as it has been under Sumlin. You can argue that Sumlin had nothing to do with the bump and it was the move to the SEC and I can't prove you wrong, but you can't prove that it wasn't Sumlin's doing either and there are several Sumliny coaches in the SEC that specialize in recruiting but not coaching and the schools recruiting takes a hit when they leave.

Sure. They're a sleeping giant. If that sounds exciting to Aggie fans, have at it. But until you're actually a giant like Alabama... you're just talking to hear yourself talk. At the end of the day... you're not a giant.

And Sumlin is the best coach the Aggies have had in years. By all means -- fire the guy and go hire Dennis Franchione v.2. See how that goes for you.

For all of the fanfare, A & M has been very mediocre over the past 3-4 years.

I actually look for Auburn to push Bama a bit this upcoming season.

Read something interesting about A&M last week, they don't have a player on their team who was alive the last time the aggies beat LSU.

The aggies are 1-8 in their last nine games against Ole Miss, Miss State, & LSU.

That's an over the top prediction, but I do expect Texas to begin to climb back to being competitive in the Big 12 in the next few years. That's hardly equal to winning a NC, but I do expect that they may begin to pull recruits back from A&M and Oklahoma.

A&M has a huge following, one of the biggest stadiums that is usually packed and the only team within the state of Texas that can sell being in the SEC to recruits.  It will also only grow stronger as the Big-12 continues to fall apart.  If Saban, Meyer, Swinney, Stoops, Pitrino or Harbaugh were there...  If Richt was there, they would continue to lose a game or two a year that they had no business losing
