  • The possibility of college players transferring and being immediately eligible at the next program alarms at least two of the five new members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Board of Directors

    -OR-

... were so mad at Kentucky that they made them play Cleveland State

    Quote
“It would open a door that should never be opened,” Cleveland State Coach Gary Waters said. Without the requirement of sitting out a year as a transfer, “all of a sudden you have free agency,” Waters said.

Cleveland State, which plays at Kentucky this coming season, knows all about transfers/free agency. In recent seasons, Waters has seen three players transfer away: Trey Lewis (to Louisville), Anton Grady (to Wichita State) and Bryn Forbes (to Michigan State).

Waters envisions rival recruiters “at your games seeing if they want your players.”

South Carolina Coach Frank Martin, who also is a new NABC Board member, saw the growing number of transfers (approaching 1,000 annually nationwide) as a reflection on more than college athletics.

“We all want instant gratification,” he said. “We want the first job to be CEO. We no longer want our first job to be the guy who makes coffee. We all want instant gratification.”

Cleveland State coach questioned whether players who transfer because a school does not offer a class or major are truly motivated by academics. In hopes of playing somewhere else, a player will look for a course their school does not offer, he said.

“It’s become an academic,” Waters said before correcting himself. “It’s become an epidemic.

    “Freudian slip,” he added.

Mid-year transfers who transfer in 2nd year should consider sitting out 1.5 years to have two seasons to play. Example: SMU's Semi Ojeleye.

Would be only semi-eligible if he plays in 2018.

  • Nick King, one of the two players that recently decided to leave Alabama, is headed to Middle Tennessee as a graduate transfer.

Memphis native began his college career at Memphis before transferring to Alabama in 2015.

King averaged 3.3 points in limited action for the Tide last season, only playing in seven games because of a lung infection.

Dazon Ingram let it slip that Ar'Mond Davis might, in fact, stay with the team. Nothing is final and coach Avery Johnson had already departed at the time of the revelation.

Davis, a JUCO transfer who arrived before last season, announced his decision to leave April 4.

"I wasn't for it," Ingram said Monday. "But he decided to stay, so I'm happy that he's staying."

It took only a moment for Ingram to realize that news wasn't yet public.

"I don't suppose he's told you," he said with a little nervous laughter.

Alabama's team spokesman couldn't confirm anything was final for Davis' return, only saying he was still weighing his options.

The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 6.0 points a game in a role that varied throughout the season. He had a season-high 19 in a four-OT win over eventual Final Four team South Carolina in February. That was part of a stretch with five double-figure scoring games in a span of eight appearances.

Two others -- Nick King and Brandon Austin -- also announced they would transfer out of the program after the season. Neither were present at the banquet Monday but Davis was.
