I still like Phil Bennett, just fired as head coach at SMU but hell of a DC at K-State

Says he was hired by head football coach Bobby Petrino on February 1, 2008.

Yeah, it was posted they were talking. Not that he was hired. Which this thread (now merged with that thread) was talking about.

Someone in this thread said that Steele had one years' experience as a Defensive Coordinator -- I thought, and I have been wrong once before, that he was the DC at Florida State under Bowden.

Nope....Mickey Andrews has been FSU's DC for 20+ years.   Both Chuck Amato in stint 1 and 2, and Steele have had titles like Asst HC or Exec HC, but Andrews has been in charge of the D for most of Bowden's career.

Well if this is the case maybe we could get some of the players he recruited....check out the bottom of this page

I'm sure the delay in an announcement is very largely due to an agreement being made about us/Steele trying to sway the kids he's recruited to Bama.

Think about it....how would we feel if an assistant left 6 days before signing day and tried to sway the kids he's recruiting?

We would NOT be happy, and we'd have every reason to not be happy.

Alabama runs the 3-4! I'd do backflips if we hired a guy that would install the 3-4 defense.

It doesn't matter what scheme you run, as long as you're successful doing it.  Certain teams run a great 3-4 defense (e.g. New England Patriots) and other teams run a great 4-3 defense (e.g. Baltimore Ravens last year).  In general, college teams tend not to run a 3-4 because the personnel don't really fit it in college.

Usually, the position that we have the most difficult time recruiting for is defensive line -- although, right now, we seem to have more of them than linebackers.  It would seem to me, just from a numbers standpoint that running the 3-4 would be advantageous.

hogfansince79

Well, I just don't see why everyone is excited about this hire (if true).  As far as I can tell, he has 1 year experience as a DC.

Kevin Steele  DC  -  2007 Alabama ( 7 - 6 )

                          national rank      avg/g
Rushing Defense        28            124.15
Pass Eff Def              38            117.21
Total Defense            31            345.46
Scoring Defense         27             22.00
Sacks                      73               1.85  (24.0 total)

Hammer away, I'm use to fellas... but I sure don't see anything special about this.

But usually you gotta have one or two linebackers be sort of a "hybrid" type of linebacker, e.g. DeMarcus Ware or Shawn Merriman or Shawn Phillips.  It's hard enough to find athletes who are fully developed enough to play as a tweener at that size, especially out of high school.  Usually, our LB tend to be on the smaller side but faster.  For a 3-4, you'd need like at least 2 Keith Jacksons and a Jamal Anderson style player.  Then you'd need to be able to have 2-3 fast LB and a larger LB.  I think it's just difficult to do personnel wise I'd guess.

If this is true, and I would love it if it were, we will have yet ANOTHER big gameday storyline in the coming seasons.  Here's how I'll rank the way the controversies play in the national media:

1. Petrino and Tubberville finally face-off.  (Tubbs - "Mofo tried to steal my job")
2. Nuttbowl 2008.  (It will wane after this year because, after this year, we will trounce them)
3. Arkansas vs. South Carolina (This year - "Spurrier stole our DC two weeks before signing day."  Next year - "Ellis who?")
4. Arkansas vs. Alabama (We stole their DC four DAYS before signing day.)

Hogaliciousness

It seems that Arkansas would be a good fit for Steele b/c Saban is really running the defense.  Steele would call in a drop/cover scheme and Saban would veto it for say a blitz.  Steele seems to take his job seriously, recruit well, and would be a good fit for the Hogz.

I would have much rather have Phil Bennett as the DC... however, if Steele is indeed the hire by Petrino then I will have to trust Petrino. I will still have my doubts after all, Steele has only 1 single year as the DC at Bama and they gave up 21 to ULM and finished with a 7-6 record... I am not jumping out of my chair if this is the hire... Is it even true???

Wow this year he recruited one 3 star, four 4 stars, and one 5 stars.  Not to mention good recruits at Florida State the year before.  We might really be getting some talent to the hill in the next couple of years.  Beats these last 2 DC that didn't recruit.

Idahog

Stewie, your link says he serves as head cheerleader at the UofA.  Just sayin... I don't think it matters one way or the other if he is or not, he recruits great and thats what BP has been hiring, and he'll probably be an above average coordinator as well.

Sounds like we should blame Saban for their lack of denfense, not Steele
He definitely is a good recruiter. Petrino has said he wants a defense that
will stop the run first and put pressure on the qb.

Question, is Steele noted for running more zone opposed to man to man ?

The hire apparently has been made and now you will see how important the recruiting
side of a defensive co-ordinator is. I have stated that most good D-cords do not recruit.
Alabama went that route this year and their defense sucked. Petrino wanted a recruiting
co-ordinator for DC, lets just see this time next year how it worked out. I would not be
surprised if Alabama gets Bennett.

PigTimePlayer

If this is true, I am excited.  SEC experience, NFL experience, and by all accounts a great recruiter . . . this is the name of the game, and BP knows it.  This is exciting stuff.

On another note, Saban must be awful to work for . . . seems like he is losing assistants quite often.
Advice for reading posts on Hogville:  Think about how stupid the average person is.  Then, remember that half of the people are more stupid than that.  So relax and take it easy on 'em.
