Local talk show in Montgomery is saying that Arkansas is talking to Alabama's DC Kevin Still.  Don't have a link.  Will listen to them this morning and Paul Finebaum this afternoon to see what else is said.  Anything out of Arkansas on this?  They said if it happens, would be announced after the 6th.

Steele has also earned a reputation as an outstanding recruiter. He was named the Rivals.com National Recruiter of the Year in February for his work in helping Florida State land a 2005 signing class ranked No. 1 nationally by some recruiting services.

I like it.  Good recruiter, NFL experience, worked for Tom Osborne.  Makes Sabin have to retool both offense and defense for next year.  On the down side he couldn't stop the Nuttster's vanilla offense this last year.
Ladies and Gentlemen can I please have your attention.  I've just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story and I need all of you to stop what you are doing and listen!

He couldn't stop ULM either.

Not a chance in hell.

Where have you heard something different?  Do you have a reason for thinking this?  Are you Kevin Steele?

I don't have a clue either way and honestly haven't heard of the guy.  The thread starter at least stated where he heard it.  Are you a bama fan stamping your indignant little feet or do you think we all know all the facts you do and have reached the same conclusion with no discussion?

edit:  Never mind, after checking your post history, I see you have nothing more to add.

Coaching is just one piece of the puzzle to a point dont you think his players on the field had just a little more to do with it that he did, he cant tackle for them.  ULM was not good, but Arkansas had some of the best talent in the SEC last year on the offensive side of the ball we were hard for a lot of defenses to stop.

Not trying to derail the thread, but what happened to Joe Kines? I thought for some reason he was still the DC at Bama.

monty hawg

Steele was the HC at Baylor.  Joined Saban's staff last year.  Later on in the show, they (talk show host) mentioned something about Steele's contract.  Also, you need to know that Steele is a finalist for the Southern Alabama HC position.  Southern Alabama is starting a football program.  Don't have time to do any research for you...will continue to listen and pass along any info.  John and Barry Sportstalk 740 have a pretty good track record of info on Bama.  Miss somethings that happen, but do have a fairly good pulse on Bama and Auburn.  By the way, the talk in Bama is how hard Saban is to work for and if Julio goes to Bama or to the Sooners.

South Alabama, not Southern Alabama.  It's the school Pel came from

Listen to Dunaway & Brown at 1:00 on AM 690. You can also listen to them online at dandbradio.com. They are by far the best sports show on the radio in bama, and they are a great source for bama info. I can't stand Finebaum, but these guys really have a great show.

1-31 in the Big 12 conference at Baylor (1999-2002) and 1 year experience as DC...

No Thanks!

Kines is part of the administration at Alabama now.  Saban didn't keep him on staff, but Bama loves him, or so I've heard.

I'm not real concerned with how successful a guy is as a head coach.  There are numerous guys who are good coordinators but can't cut it as a head coach.  If he was very successful he wouldn't make be a defensive coordinator.  Obviously, he was promoted for some reason.  You have to take the best available.

Arkansas fans should be concerned with two things:
1)  Can he coach a defense?
2)  Can he recruit?

Who gives a flying flip what he did at Baylor as a head coach?

Well, obviously if he was successful as a HC he would still be one.  The way I look at it is if you're in charge of a program for four years, and you can only manage 1 win in the Big 2 (err, Big 12) during that time... oh nevermind, apparently you want this guy... so be happy with him.  I won't be.

Alabama runs the 3-4! I'd do backflips if we hired a guy that would install the 3-4 defense.

Head Coaching results do not mean that a guy cant be a great coordinator.

Lots of great coordinators sucked hard as head coaches

Thanks for saying the same thing.

I'm not saying I want him but to dismiss him as a candidate based on what happened in the Big 12 as a head coach is ridiculous.

Ask yourself this.

1) Do you think a potential recruit is not going to come here because he went 1-31 at Baylor?
2) Do you think he won't be able to call a defense because the tragedy of going 1-31 at Baylor?

If your answer is yes to either of those, have a nice day.
If your answer is no, then why are you worried?  It's not going to affect his job here.

We're not hiring him for head coach.  What he's done in the past is a sunk cost.  It's like buying a home for $100,000 10 years ago.  The neighborhood is now a dump.  The home is worth $75,000.  In five years, it'll be worth $50,000.  Do you refuse to sell now because you'll lose $25,000?  Of course not, you take your money and run.  The $100,000 is irrelevant and nothing you can do can change that decision nor should it effect you.

Read me original post... what he did as a HC AND 1 year experience as a DC!  Since when are we the training ground for new defensive coordinators?  If that is the case, just give it to Lorenzo Ward or Bobby Allen and lets move forward.

Steele has coached at Tennessee, Okla St., Nebraska, Florida St., and Alabama as a LB's coach. He's got a wealth of experience as a position coach. He's got a year under his belt as DC under one of the best Defensive Minds in college football (Saban). He's known to be a heckuva recruiter. I've got my fingers crossed!

He couldn't recurit at Baylor....Remember when Kevin Green whipped his ass on the sidelines when both were with the Panthers?

Yeah, those two are such equivalent cases. ::)

Would you like to answer my questions or continue to ignore that our DC is really going to have two primary functions, coaching a defense and recruiting?

He obviously knows the game.  All accounts thus far say he's a good recruiter.  He's not my top choice but nothing you've said should eliminate him from consideration.

pel - i'm with you. teams dont hire defensive coordinators as head coach if they weren't a great dc.  being a head coach and a dc are not even close to the same thing.

I'd say that he's a proven recruiter. Saban obviously thinks he's ready for a DC position. If we could get this type of recruiting from our DC... Well, like I said before, I've got my fingers crossed. They say Saban is hard to work for... IMO that's the only way we could land Steele. We'd be extremely lucky to get this guy.

-Nick Saban obviously thinks he's a good coach. He hired him to be Alabama's DC.

I'll take Nick Saban's evaluation of a coach over yours... ;D

Do you comprehend anything you read ???

He's not my top choice but nothing you've said should eliminate him from consideration.

I think you're just having a tough time finding some other qualification that trumps those two.  I know very little about Kevin Steele.  He's not even on my short list.  But your logic, or lack thereof, is the reason I responded.

First off...I don't care what you think.  If you think his qualifications are worth considering, then more power to ya.  Like I said before, IMO... I don't.

Now, having said that, maybe I'm just tired of living the mediocre nightmare of the last 10 years.  I believe hiring BP was the best thing this university has ever done, and I expect great things from him.  I believe he needs to hire a proven DC, not anymore mediocre ones like the one we had.  I am so afraid we'll get stuck with another loser like the Nuttcase.  So I apologize if I offened anyone...I'm just tired of this run of the mill crap.

One reason Steele came to Alabama was that his parents live here and he wanted to be close to them. He'll either be the new head coach at South Alabama or he'll stay where he is.

Not unless you need dough right away.  Real Estate always goes up.  In another 10 years the land will be worth more than the house.  Some development agency will buy the whole neighborhood to tear it down and build apartment buildings.  You'll get your money back and then some.
