He's leading the nation in total offense by over 80 yards per game and on pace to shatter the current Division 1 record for total yards by around 70 per game.  Also leading the nation in TD passes, pass yardage, and TD responsibility (tied with Lamar Jackson).  Third in pass efficiency.

When he graduated from Whitehouse High School he only had something like two offers, from Tech and SMU.

His team's lack of defense is all that is keeping him from being a serious Heisman contender.  Since he became the starter less than two full seasons ago he has put up over 50 points in a game three times and lost.

Texas wanted him to be a defensive back. That pissed him off.

The NCAA record for most games with 400 or more yards of total offense is 21.  Mahomes has started 19 games in his career and has gone over 400 eleven times.

He didn't play QB in high school until his junior year of 2012.  By 2013 he was a man among boys, an unstoppable force who was the Player of the Year in Texas.  It's a shame that so many coaching staffs get locked onto targets early and aren't flexible enough to recognize and act upon late breaking players and developments.  How anyone could watch Mahomes put up 58 points for historically overmatched Whitehouse High School and outduel Greg Ward and perennial power John Tyler for the district championship, then throw for over 650 yards and eight TDs in round three of the 5-A playoffs...and not say, "Wait a minute, how are we letting Texas Tech and SMU battle it out for this guy?"...is a little hard to understand.
