COLUMBIA, MO. • The last time the Southeastern Conference's most powerful football school needed a basketball coach, Alabama took the unconventional route. After striking out on Wichita State's Gregg Marshall — the great white whale of many an ambitious athletics director — the Crimson Tide rolled the dice on Avery Johnson, an NBA coach with no chops in the college game.

The 2006 NBA coach of the year has made a quick transition. In Johnson's debut season, Alabama climbed aboard the NCAA Tournament bubble last year until a late-season swoon. This year, the Crimson Tide (10-6, 3-1 SEC) stumbled early against a challenging nonconference schedule but seem to have found their balance through two weeks of SEC games.
