QuoteVEGAS – The funny thing about Malik Monk's heroic 3-pointer is that he was supposed to drive the ball. Get to the rim, get fouled if you can. Those were the orders.

"But I was hot," Monk said, "so I didn't."

Sixth-ranked Kentucky trailed seventh-ranked North Carolina by just two points with less than 30 seconds to go Saturday in what turned out to be the best college basketball game of the season so far. The Wildcats didn't need a three, but Monk wanted one.

"He threw it, bang, it went in," said coach John Calipari, who'd commanded him to do exactly the opposite. "Great shot, kid."

Monk's final bucket, with 22 seconds remaining, gave him a UK freshman-record 47 points and delivered a thrilling, 103-100 victory for Kentucky on Saturday in the CBS Sports Classic.

Malik Monk's 47 points are second-most ever against North Carolina. Only Dick Groat [Pittsburgh Pirates] of Duke (48 points) in 1952 scored more on the Heels.

6. Dan Issel, 47 — 98-89 win at Alabama on Feb. 23, 1970.

8. Jodie Meeks, 46 — 93-69 win over Appalachian State on Dec. 20, 2008.

9. Jodie Meeks, 45 — 79-63 win at Arkansas on Feb. 14, 2009.

QuoteWaived by the Denver Nuggets on Friday, forward Alonzo Gee made a quick return to the NBA - with the same team that had let him go.

Gee signed a 10-day contract with the Nuggets on Sunday.

Why did Denver release Gee only to bring him right back?

On Tuesday, Gee's $1,145,294 contract was to become fully guaranteed. A 10-day contract pays about $77,000.

Gee will get a trip to London out of his 10-day status.

"We love Alonzo," Nuggets coach Michael Malone told the Denver Post when Gee was released. "He was terrific. So that move by no means was an indication of how we feel about him. The front office made a move that going forward gives us flexibility."

At the time of his release, Gee had played in one of Denver's previous 11 games...

Gee played at Alabama from the 2005-06 through the 2008-09 seasons. He ranks 13thin points and 19th in rebounds in Crimson Tide history.

QuoteCousins reportedly intends to sign "a massive, max-money extension, estimated at roughly $207 million during the offseason that will keep the big man in a Kings uniform long-term," according to CSN Calilfornia's James Ham. To put that in perspective, that would be the richest contract in NBA history if signed today.

QuoteEleven days after acquiring Williams from the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Atlanta Hawks have agreed to trade the guard to the Denver Nuggets, who are expected to waive Williams.

Williams has not played in the NBA this season.

So what really got traded in the deal?

Williams' contract.

In the final season of a two-year deal that he signed with the Cavs, Williams is owed $2,194,500 salary for 2016-17.

The NBA has a salary cap of $94.1 million, and any team that reaches $113.3 million in spending is subject to a penalty called the luxury tax. But the NBA also has a salary-cap floor. A team that doesn't spend at least $84.7 million also incurs penalties.

The Nuggets are almost $10 million away from the floor. Putting Williams' contract on the books, paying off the remainder of his contract and releasing him helps Denver get closer to the floor without using a roster spot.

In his 818 NBA games, Williams has averaged 13.2 points and 4.9 assists.

Last season, Williams joined Jason Caffey and Robert Horry as former Alabama players who played on NBA championship teams.

Vice Sports finally breaks down Malik Monk and shows that there have been very few players like him in the last decade http://kentuckysportsradio.com/basketball-2/malik-monk-is-breaking-the-mold-for-elite-scoring-guards/ ...

QuoteOver the last decade-plus of draft prospects—hundreds and hundreds of players—the Kentucky shooting guard stands out as genuinely unique. He's a volcanic offensive force, seemingly put on this Earth to get buckets, a 6-foot-3 scorer averaging 22.4 points per game on a 63 percent true-shooting percentage, one of five high-major guards to put up such numbers in the last 25 years of college hoops.

And stats don't tell the whole story. I've watched a lot of college basketball, and I've never seen a player so prone to preposterous, NBA Jam-style he's-on-fire shooting stretches. For example, in Tuesday night's Kentucky win over Georgia, he scored 31 points ... in the second half (and overtime)...

Monk has the best catch-and-shoot and the off-the-dribble jumper numbers of anyone on the list. Absurdly, Monk has been better according to Synergy when guarded in catch-and-shoot situations than unguarded, hitting at a 1.53 point-per-shot clip guarded versus 1.15 pps unguarded. That 1.53 pps guarded shot clip is the second-best among high-major players who have taken a similar volume of shots in just over a decade.

If Monk had other NBA-level skills that seemed likely to translate beyond "pure bucket getter," none of this would be an issue. There are plenty of league players who bring value even when their shots waver. But when you're an undersized two guard who doesn't get to the rim, doesn't create for others, and doesn't defend? You better be able to put the ball in the basket.

    Michigan State: 23 points, 7/11 3FG
    UCLA: 24 points, 4/8 3FG
    North Carolina: 47 points, 8/12 3FG
    South Carolina: 27 points, 4/7 3FG

QuoteTwo former Kentucky basketball players were named D-League All-Stars on Monday night, along with former players from LSU and Texas A&M.

Dakari Johnson and Alex Poythress were named to the game, along with fellow SEC alums Jalen Jones of Texas A&M and Johnny "Catfish Hole" O'Bryant III of LSU.

The game will be played on Feb. 18 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome (NBA TV).

Jones, who plays for the Maine Red Claws, and Poythress of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants will play on the East. Johnson of the Oklahoma City Blue and O'Bryant of Northern Arizona Suns.

Jones is getting 21.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game for the Red Claws. Poythress is getting 18.9 poits and 7.9 rebounds per game for the Mad Ants.

Johnson is averaging 18.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season, and O'Bryant is currently with the Denver Nuggets after signing a second 10-day contract on Monday.

Raptors 905 coach Jerry Stackhouse will be the head coach of the Eastern Conference, with former Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall on his staff as an assistant.

QuoteDelk was an SEC Player of the Year, All-American and Final Four Most Outstanding Player for the Wildcats. He still owns the school record for career 3-pointers and ranks fifth on the all-time scoring list, second in steals.

So here's a question he is qualified to answer: Which four players belong on the Mount Rushmore of Kentucky basketball?

"Of course you gotta have Dan Issel up there. I'm gonna put Kenny Walker. Can't leave off the Goose (Jack Givens). And I have to put AD up there. I like Anthony Davis. If it was five, I'd probably put myself, but those are the four guys that I would have to put up there."

Issel, Walker and Givens rank 1, 2 and 3 on the school's career scoring list — Issel also has the record for rebounds — and all of their jerseys are retired. Each of them was a consensus All-American, while Davis was consensus National Player of the Year.

Davis also won Freshman of the Year, National Defensive Player of the Year and was Final Four Most Outstanding Player for the 2012 NCAA title team. He set a national freshman record for blocked shots. All of that is why Delk — the last UK player to have his jersey retired — would like to see rules bent to get Davis into Rupp Arena's rafters alongside the others.

"AD won every accolade that you could possibly win. As a freshman," Delk said. "So there's a special place for him up there. And I know you have to be a graduate and all that kind of stuff to get your jersey retired — five years (after being) inducted into the (UK) Hall of Fame — but Anthony Davis did something that no other player in history will probably do."

QuoteJ.J. Frazier woke up Saturday morning feeling sick. When he met up with an athletic trainer, they thought he had the flu. Georgia's health center was closed, so one of the best players in Georgia basketball history, statistically speaking at least, was taken to a local urgent care facility.

"A lot of times you play your best game when you're sick," head coach Mark Fox said.

There are dwindling chances for people to see one of the more special players in Georgia history. He's going out very loudly: Twenty-nine points on Saturday night, including the game-winning free throws with 1.6 seconds left, rescuing Georgia from what would have been a devastating loss to woeful LSU. Instead it kept its postseason hopes alive with an 82-80 win.

Frazier has now scored 36, 28 and 29 points in the three games since the team's other star, Yante Maten, went out with a sprained knee. (The 36 points was against Kentucky, when Maten was injured 95 seconds into the game.)

Perspective: Frazier was a lightly-regarded, 5-foot-10 recruit out of south Georgia four years ago. He has now statistically become one of the better players in school history, ranking eighth all-time in scoring, fifth in assists, and in the top 10 in a plethora of other categories.
