Settling this would not clear his name. Allowing it to play out and completely discrediting Ole Miss is the end game. He wants to coach again and that, perhaps only in his mind, is why he wants a clean bill.

His bill will never be cleaned...............It was already soiled before all this.

What keeps Houston Nutt from getting a job is losing to 1-AA teams, losing 12 straight conference games, and getting his last two bosses fired. You can now add to that list, "suing your former employer." I mean, who wouldn't want to hire that guy, amirite?

Seriously, the guy has a losing record to both Vandy and Kentucky (2-4 against both all time).

Maybe Ole Miss should file a motion to make the lawsuit a conference game. You know Nutt isn't going to win many of those.

Well done

I'm gonna throw this out there. Wouldn't the burden of proof be on Nutt that Ole Miss intentionally caused him not to get another P5 job by purposefully doing his reputation harm?

If so, that's a long shot imo. I mean how is he gonna prove anything without implicating himself in some of this mess?

One thing is for sure, the stunt that Petrino pulled here was pretty bad - and it could surely be said that Jeff Long's dismissal speech didn't do Bobby's reputation any favors. But his (very public) firing damn sure didn't prevent HIM from getting another big gig.

Nobody ever said that Petrino wasn't a great coach...we all knew that he was going to have to pay his dues for a little while and then would get back to a bigger job. But HDN? Surely everyone realizes how much he underachieved with the talent that fell into his lap while at Arkansas. A good coach doesn't make that mistake.

From what some lawyer types on this board have said, the suit isn't about that.  It is about Ole Piss violating the severance agreement by claiming all the violations were on other sports, or, and this is the kicker, on previous coaches.  They went public with that, violating the agreement.

Looks like HDN has a case.  He timed it beautifully.

Really, fellas and ladies, I am no HDN fan.  I used to be a pretty vocal critic, mostly based on his refusal to be the HC and drop the ridiculous obsession with being the OC and "calling plays" that worked to the detriment of the rest of the program.  Can anyone say kicking game foibles?

Anyway, when I retired from the National Guard, fellow soldiers got a friend that worked at the Ole Piss front office to tell Nutt that I was a huge fan and was retiring.  It was for a gag at my expense but Hootie didn't know it.  He sent a box of Ole Piss memorabilia to me, signed it all, for someone he never met, in appreciation for my service.  A very nice gesture, and something he didn't have to do.

Its hard for me to work up much animosity now, you know whut ah mean?  Against Nutt, I mean.  I can work up a ton of animosity towards Ole Piss at the drop of a hat.

I really don't believe Hooty had anything to do with Frank deciding to retire. I believe it had everything to do with the fact that Jim Lindsey left the BOT. Lindsey was Frank's biggest and most loyal supporter. Without Lindsey on the BOT, Frank's support was weakened dramatically. Frank's advanced age was a factor too.

By remaining in the public eye (justifiably or not), Nutt drags up memories among some Arkansas fans of his tenure as the Razorback coach.  Unfortunately for him, Nutt poisoned the waters while he was at Arkansas, and  many of those memories about him are not so pleasant.  A lot of people might like to keep it under wraps in the past, but as  long as he continues to insert himself into the public eye, folks are going to be reminded of his shenanigans at Arkansas rather than his accomplishments.  It really could have been soooo different for him had he played his cards a little differently.

Its like telling you to forget about your ex-wife who was self-centered, mistreated your kids, and always had eyes for the dollar sign.  But she still shows up publicly, flaunts her over over-inflated ego, and inspires thoughts of the bad times you had in your relationship with her.  You just want her to go away, but she seems to always be there.

But is essence I agree, time to move on from that era.

Like I said, so many are focused so hard on Nutt they miss the point of history. Imagine if you will an alterntate 1998 and Ford still the HC. We win our 7 to 9 games but the writing is on the wall and Ford is out. Imagine this time Tubby comes to town instead of a Nutt. Imagine the recruiting actually making sense instead of the 3 ring circus Nutt did. Imagine When a coach like CBB comes to take over there is no fan division, no history of circus under barnum and nUtts 3 rings of insanity.
Then imagine CB fired next year and a fire breathing rah rah guy coming, taking the talent and coming within a breath of winning it all. Spending the next 5 to 10 years trying to reproduce results while hiding his flaws.  That is the history I speak of.  I like to imagine what would have been if we never got suckered by a nut and then suckered punched for 10 years

Anyone who really thinks that Hootie hasn't got another job because of Ole Miss saying he cheated needs to have a mental examination!

Augustus

I'm not sure why the confusion?

It doesn't matter how crappy of a Coach, Houston Nutt was.  It doesn't matter when he left his job or when the alleged smear campaign began.

If there was a smear campaign, it doesn't matter whether that influenced Houston Nutt from being able to acquire employment or not.

What matters is... when Nutt was fired from Ole Miss, they signed a binding indefinite agreement that neither would defame/smear/talk negatively about the other.

Given all that's gone on at Ole Miss, during the Hugh Freeze tenure? It's quite likely that someone (Freeze) acting on Ole Miss' behalf did smear Houston Nutt?

But... as others have pointed out, I see Ole Miss paying this lawsuit off and trying to get rid of it ASAP (with a non-disclosure clause, of course).

Because this involves a Court, who can order a further discovery of evidence regarding Hugh Freeze... the NCAA doesn't have this power.  This civil suit can make the NCAA investigation into Ole Miss a WHOLE lot worse.

So let me get this straight; you're saying they let Nutt decide whether he stayed for the $3mm or left for the same $3mm , his choice? Really?

Wow, just wow!  I need to think about this for a bit. So, in the sit down meeting , prior to the LSU game in November of '07, Nutt gets to choose stay for the 3 or leave for 3? Well, that's a very nice "pat on the ass with some Boudreauxs butt cream" to boot. Fantastic! Sounds like we're in good hands there.

Look I am no nutt fan, and it seems like there is something new comes out every few years that makes me shake my head in disbelieve. With that said, in 2007 all the national guru's could say was Arkansas is stupid for getting rid of a coach that twice won the west, as recently as the year before. Has a lot of talent possibly coming back(remember D-Mac and Jones were Jr's).  They claimed Ole Piss got a hell of a coach and stole one from us. The next two years seemed to bare that out with his victories and back to back new year day bowls. (fiddy years, FIDDY) remember that?  It wasn't until his last two years at Ol piss the truth finally started coming out and the national guys turned on him too.
So understanding that, you have to see. Had we just flat out fired him, I doubt even CBP would have come. I mean who would wanna coach for a Historically(by record) Middle of pack SEC team that will fire you one year removed from winning the west?
There are reasons things went they way they did. Perspective is important

He knew his leash was short and needed to leave yet he was not about to get fired when he quit. He was willing to wait it out to get his money. It was his annuity that didn't mature until after the next season that he wanted so bad. If he left voluntarily before that time he forfeited it.
