What's up with Georgia's Trenton Thompson, LSU's Arden Key?

Thompson and Key -- two of the top defensive players in the SEC -- both took time away from school and their teams during the spring under mysterious circumstances. Thompson was hospitalized in February following a strange episode in which he was found wandering down a road near the Georgia campus. The incident was described as an adverse reaction to prescription drugs, and Thompson later withdrew from school and missed spring practice. He re-enrolled in classes this summer. Key also missed the spring for "personal reasons" that were never disclosed, and later underwent shoulder surgery. He also re-enrolled in classes this summer. Both are back with their teams, but are they 100 percent ready to play this fall?

Mecole Hardman is a wide receiver.

The rising sophomore came to Georgia as an athlete. He spent the 2016 season as a cornerback.

-- The closest thing resembling a depth chart in the media guide is a section titled "returning starters." Georgia lists eight returning offensive starters, including Godwin and Michael Chigbu at receiver. Lamont Gaillard is listed as a returning starter at right guard although he is projected to be Georgia's starting center.

Georgia also lists 10 returning defensive starters. The only starter on that side of the ball the Bulldogs lost was nickel defender Maurice Smith.

-- Receiver Shakenneth Williams is still listed on Georgia's roster. During the spring, head coach Kirby Smart said Williams was dealing with injuries that prevented him from practicing. Williams spent the 15 practices serving as a student-coach.

Winner: Tennessee's Kendal Vickers, Arkansas' Frank Ragnow

Ragnow, when asked about a report that coaches may be considering using him on defense in addition to center, the offensive lineman responded: "I'm all about it, that'd be cool."

He also said: "Yeah, this is the first time I have been in front of this many people with cameras. It's been cool, we got to fly on a private plane which was pretty cool and to just see all of these people who are interested in what I have to say is pretty cool."

Winner: Bret Bielema

Being at media days just two days after becoming a father, the Arkansas would probably have been given a pass if he had rambled on due to lack of sleep.

Instead, he didn't disappoint.

Loser: Chipotle

Bielema mentioning Chipotle Mexican Grill on live television must have felt like the best thing to happen in more than a year for the restaurant ... until he subsequently provided the sound bite that got everyone's attention instead:

"My wife wanted a double veggie bowl from Chipotle — trying to get an endorsement right there — I was walking down, and I recognized the FaceTime, pulled it out and I see Greg Sankey's name. I said: This is pretty cool, the commissioner is FaceTiming me. That's pretty neat. He said, 'Why were you calling me?' I said, 'I apologize, I must have butt-dialed you.' That was a unique experience."

Loser: Butch Jones

The announcement about team captains came across as trying to manufacture something out of nothing in terms of news, which to the rest of the league is quickly becoming the modus operandi for the "champions of life" coach.

Loser: Ed Orgeron

Everyone in the Wynfrey ballroom knew they were in trouble when his opening comments included "I would like to tell you a little story about growing up in Louisiana ..." and then went on for 15 minutes while seemingly including every name imaginable.

Orgeron came across as filibustering...

SEC officials will have heightened focus on coaches entering the field to protest calls, subject to immediate 15-yard penalty

SEC had 26 targeting fouls in 2016, 5 initiated from the booth. 5 were overturned

Ole Miss's time at the Media Days podium isn't until Thursday, but the Rebels are already a major story because former head coach Houston Nutt filed a civil lawsuit against the university alleging breach of contract via defamation of character.  The lawsuit mentioned current head coach Hugh Freeze who is scheduled to appear at SEC Media Days on Thursday.

Kevin Sumlin has to win this year is the sentiment Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward delivered on The Paul Finebaum show in May.

"Coach Sumlin knows he has to win," Woodward said. "He has to win this year. He has to do better than he has done in the past."

Despite the publicly stated pressure to win, Sumlin says his approach will remain unchanged this season.
