I think this will be great.   So if the players who will be on the Olympic team cant play put together your teams.  Remember this is 3 on 3 and this a whole different game that it will be played on a half court and shots will count as either 1 or 2 points (not 2 or 3)  and played I think to 21 points.

I watched the "world championships of 3 on 3 basketball" on tv not long ago and it was mostly Europeans who could shoot from the outside.   I know some will think I am crazy but I like a combo like Channing Frye 6'11" and Kyle Korver 6'7"  and Kevin Love 6'9"      they can all shoot 3s and have enough length to defend the 3 plus kill on the boards.

If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

Next up.......HORSE.

When I was a kid (1970's or early 80's) I know I saw a game of HORSE televised. It was with some NBA stars, maybe Dr. J and some others. Was it part of All-star festivities or some charity thing? I'm not sure, but I know I saw it. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

(And no, it wasn't the MJ/Bird McD's commercial, many years before that.)

Self reply: According to the googles on the interweb, NBC televised a H-O-R-S-E tournament during the 78-79 season, shown during halftime of the games of the week.

Thanks, 'checker. That may be what I'm remembering, although I was wrong. It was CBS and not NBC.

This is awesome.  3 on 3 is great.

I hope it's make and take rules too.

one year the finals in horse it was Bob Lanier vs Geoff Petrie  (I think Petrie won)   remember Red on Roundball ??   He was very big on the 2 handed chest pass.  I had somebody once tell me that Red would turn over in his grave if he saw basketball today BUT he had Bob Cousy as his PG and he was really flashy.

husker71

oh sorry!!   Lanier vs Petrie was the one on one championship   not horse      I am getting old

Does anybody else remember when George Muresan, Muggsy Bogues, and Granville Waiters played "21" on Saturday Morning's Wide World of Sports? They were the opening act for the Globe Trotters who beat the Washington Generals by 13 if I recall correctly.
I support the Razorbacks in the city that never sleeps.

Joe Johnson would be a great 3 on 3 player.  Good size and quickness, good outside and mid-range game, and great handles.  On D he could guard just about any position.

I expect this game will play a bit differently;  one athletic slasher, one big who can bomb, and one guy who will distribute the rock and shoot from deep.

Heck,  the  James-Kyrie-Love combo would be great.

Backyard ball at it's best.

The NBA should do this during All-Star weekend. A four round tournament with 16 teams and 5 players per team. They could impose a minimum of two players from each NBA team then pick the best of the rest to attend. They could let celebrities and former players "coach" and they would collaborate 16 lucky fans to hold a draft. To make it more interesting each winning team can select two players from the team they just defeated so start out with five players and end up with 11 by the All-Star game on Sunday.
If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?

It was CBS.  NBC didn't cover basketball back then.  I remember it well. I remember Bob Macadoo grabbing the brace of the backboard with his left hand and swinging toward the rim and dunking it with his right hand. I wish there were more gimmicks like this at halftime of games. I'd watch more.

Yes, to 21 or 10 minutes.
I spend all my time playing Trackmania, and various board games. You might remember me as Corndog7 or PossibleOatmeal.
Twitter sucks now. I deleted my account. I mostly just use TikTok now.

Anyone on this planet that could beat them?

Probably win most games playing 3 on 5.

husker71

those guys will play in the "real" Olympic basketball tourney.   None of them would lower themselves to play in this.  But somebody will have a real gold medal   just like the 5 on 5 guys

I agree.  We already have basketball.  Do we really need a bastardized version of it?

Gotta go now.  Synchronized swimming is coming on, then rhythmic gymnastics.

None that would be favored, but something like a Kyrie/Kwahi/George combo might give them fits, particularly if Kyrie plays give-a-damn defense.      Russ would likely be a better 2 way fit, since he wouldn't have to carry the offense with the other two.

A guard that gets to the rim with the ability to finish is the key to beating that proposed team.  Most of the best of the rest options are going to be 4, 5 point underdogs to the superteam you posited.

it is only 1/2 court so I dont think there is as much emphasis for speed getting down the "court"   I would want tall guys who could shoot the 3 and use their length  to play good perimeter defense.  Si,Si, I find this 3 on 3 very interesting

Its about functional speed, not end to end speed.   Getting to the rim at will be the defining skill for a guard in 3 on 3.   The more uncluttered the court, the more every bit of forced help defense matters.

Maybe one day we'll have a 1v1 or doubles gold medal.

husker71

spread the court and shoot 2's    defend the perimeter  and have one guy who can protect the rim    I think most of the 1's will come from put backs off missed 2's
