Always figured Miss State and Ole Miss to get most of the talent from Mississippi.  Wonder who will do the best job between them?

Biloxi High star Scott Austin (6-foot-4, 180 pounds) is the fourth verbal pledge from a receiver in the 2013 MS State recruiting class.

The consensus three-star prospect is considered by many to be the best receiver in Mississippi this year. He also has scholarship offers from Ole Miss and Southern Miss.

The Bulldogs' coaching staff has apparently re-focused its efforts on finding tall, rangy receivers to replace the five seniors expected to contribute heavily this fall.

Three receivers committed to MSU in the 2013 class are 6-foot-3 or taller, according to Rivals.com.

Only one receiver on MSU's roster this season - Joe Morrow - falls in that category.

LSU increased its commitment total to 17 on Friday when four-star inside linebacker Melvin Jones gave Les Miles the good word.

Jones, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound middle linebacker, had narrowed his focus to LSU and Texas A&M after picking up offers from the likes of Alabama, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Tennessee, TCU, and several others

Three top defensive prospects from "The Opening" are considering Bama

Quote
Miami linebacker Matthew Thomas, rated the nation's No. 3 outside linebacker and a five-star prospect according to 247Sports, told Charles Power of BamaOnline that Alabama is currently his leader, thanks in large to Nick Saban's history of sending linebackers to the NFL.

Jacksonville, Florida defensive end Demarcus Walker is another star prospect with the Tide high on his board, along with Florida and Auburn. Walker said he plans on making a decision soon and will visit Alabama for a camp later this month before deciding on a commitment.

Alabama is also actively recruiting one of the top defensive backs in the country, Virginia star Holland Fisher, despite the four-star safety's commitment to Virginia Tech. Fisher said that during a recent phone conversation with Saban, the Tide coach pitched the 6-foot-1, 200-pound athlete on how well he would fit in the Tide's defensive system.

I know Walker and his family well.  Our youngest is in Walker's class at ECS (which is in Cordova, not Germantown).  He's good and versatile, but they'll have to put some more size on him before he'll see the field at 'Bama.  If he's 240 lb. right now, then I run a 4.3 40 yd dash.  He's probably more like 220.

A catchy name is attached to a list of preseason standouts recognized by state media. In Alabama it's the A-listers, in Mississippi it's the Dandy Dozen. Columbus Dandy Dozen offensive lineman Jake Thomas verbally committed to Mississippi State.

Quote
The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Thomas grew up just 25 miles away from Starkville, but admits he didn't really have a favorite team growing up.

"But I had been really thinking about it lately and after talking to my parents Tuesday, I said what better time to do it than now," said Thomas.

Thomas also had offers from Ole Miss and Southern Miss.

He is rated a 4-star recruit by one recruiting service (Scout.com) and a 3-star by rivals.

He is the third Dandy Dozen offensive lineman to commit to the Bulldogs, following South Panola's Deon Mix and Hollandale Simmons' Kent Flowers.

Jackson Academy's Jamaal Clayborne, another in a stellar class of linemen in the state this year, committed to MSU last week as well.

AP: Ole Miss searching for SEC-caliber players

Quote
The Ole Miss football roster is in various stages of disarray after two disastrous seasons. Freeze is confident he can rebuild the team's depth after a few years of recruiting thanks to his connections around the region, but that's not going to help this season.

So the past two weeks have been spent looking for the current players who can meet the demands of playing in the Southeastern Conference.

Some days the search goes better than others.

Tide QB commit Cooper Bateman is scheduled to play on ESPNU Friday night

Quote
Bateman, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback from Salt Lake City, Utah's Cottonwood High School, will go head-to-head with another elite quarterback prospect in the Class of 2013, USC commit Max Browne from Skyline High School of Sammamish, Washington.

The game will be televised live on ESPNU at 8:30 p.m. Central as part of the network's weekly Geico ESPN High School Showcase series.

Bateman's Cottonwood team is looking for a big win to help them get back on track after a rough 0-2 start to their season. Bateman has a pair of touchdowns on the season so far, one passing and one rushing.
