Avery Johnson inducted into Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, a 'top of the line' honor http://www.al.com/alabamabasketball/index.ssf/2015/06/avery_johnson_honored_by_home-.html ...

QuoteBefore he was an NBA player or NBA Coach of the Year, Avery Johnson was the leader of New Orleans' St. Augustine High School's 1982-83 team that went 35-0 and won the Louisiana Class 4A state championship.

Johnson was later a record-setting point guard for Southern University in Louisiana, dishing out an NCAA-record 13.3 assists per game while guiding one of the top scoring offenses in the country.

Alabama's new coach's life and basketball career began in Louisiana. On Saturday, he was celebrated by his home-state.

Johnson was one of 11 inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, part of a group that also included former LSU and New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk.

5-star guard, one-time Pittsburgh commit, reportedly visits Alabama http://ow.ly/P0oXc

QuoteMustapha Heron, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard from Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, Conn., took an unofficial visit to Alabama on Sunday, AL.Com has confirmed.

He followed that with a visit to Marquette, according to CBSSports' Jon Rothstein.

Heron is rated as a five-star recruit, the No. 25 overall player in the country and the No. 3 combo guard.

He decommitted from Pittsburgh in April.

Earlier this year, 247Sports analyst Jerry Meyer said Heron has similarities to Los Angeles Clippers guard Lance Stephenson.

St. John's is also trending highly for Heron.

New Alabama player Arthur Edwards played the last two seasons at New Mexico. Averaged 3.9 points per game last year http://www.al.com/alabamabasketball/index.ssf/2015/07/alabama_adds_graduate_transfer.html ...

QuoteAn addition Alabama coach Avery Johnson said would be made has been finalized.

New Mexico graduate transfer Arthur Edwards — a 6-foot-6 guard/wing player — will transfer to Alabama...

Johnson said in late June that the Tide would soon add a wing player. Johnson added he was hoping for that player to be a graduate transfer, "somebody that has some experience."

Averaged about 10-12 minutes per game for Lobos.

Avery Johnson tells his story to @aldotcom http://bit.ly/1IApbMg

QuoteThere's a fascinating parallel between Avery Johnson and Alabama's basketball program that I'm not sure exists elsewhere, and it's centered the perception of others:

If Avery Johnson had listened to, or cared about, what those around him said, he would have realized he wasn't supposed to make it out of the projects of New Orleans, that he wasn't supposed to make an NBA roster, and he certainly wasn't supposed to be the guy who hit the series-winning shot in the 1999 NBA Finals.

On the same note, listening to national conversation around college basketball would have most believe that Alabama isn't supposed to consistently make it into the NCAA Tournament, that Alabama isn't supposed to beat out traditional powers for top recruits, and that Alabama isn't supposed to be anything other than "a football school".

Only time will tell how successful Avery Johnson will be in Tuscaloosa, but his passion, his work ethic, and the fact that he has spent much of his life being told why he can't but showing why he can, lead me to believe that Bryant-Denny won't be the only stadium in Tuscaloosa packed full of excited fans in the near future...

QuoteThe media was invited to watch the final hour of the workout that included some full-court scrimmaging. Take a look at Johnson's hands-on coaching as he observed drills and the scrimmage.

If there's one major takeaway, it's the pace. Alabama will be playing much faster this season.

Avery Johnson stirring up excitement before Alabama debut http://wp.me/p1aWjM-2fDw

QuoteThe first-year Crimson Tide coach might take longer to turn that buzz into wins but guard Retin Obasohan is enjoying the change.

"Gosh, it's electrifying," Obasohan said. "You can feel it. You can sense it. It's like an aura that's in the air. Everywhere you go, you've got people whispering. They think you can't hear it, but we can hear everything they're saying."

Much of that attention is because of the splashy hiring of Johnson, a former NBA coach of the year and longtime San Antonio Spurs point guard who replaced the fired Anthony Grant.

His catch phrase has been "buckle up." But the ride could be bumpy at times during his first season.

As Johnson said: "It's not going to happen overnight."

The Tide has been picked to finish 13th in the 14-team league.

Johnson must replace the top three scorers from last year's team that advanced to the second round of the NIT, including team captain Levi Randolph.

That means big roles for some of the five newcomers –

Alabama is 1-0 in basketball, thanks in large part to Dazon Ingram: http://ow.ly/UDCzn

QuoteAvery Johnson's three-piece suit remained intact throughout his Alabama coaching debut. It got a little hot on the sideline in the second half of the 77-64 win over Kennasaw State, though.

The Crimson Tide flashed potential while reminding the opening-night crowd there was work to do. Racing to a 17-point lead in the first half, shooting struggled after halftime. But Retin Obasohan and freshman Dazon Ingram had the scoring to keep Kennesaw State from the upset.

Ingram, who earned the start in his debut, dropped 16 while Obasohan led the way with 18.

Alabama won a basketball game last night by scoring 105 points. http://bit.ly/1OYgJ2r

QuoteIt took a historically bad beating Tuesday in Dayton. By Friday, Alabama made the adjustments.

A 105-93 win over visiting Louisiana-Lafayette was never close as Alabama hit triple figures against a Division I opponent for the first time in 10 years. It hit the mark two years ago against Division-II Stillman, before that, the last one was Dec. 27, 2005 (101-66) over Alabama State.

Six players reached double figures in the blowout that followed an 80-48 loss at Dayton.

Alabama heads to Orlando for a Thankgiving weekend invitational starting with Xavier on Nov. 26.

QuoteAlabama's struggled against good teams.

And Friday, it faced Wichita State coached by the man who turned down an offer to lead the Crimson Tide program. But this one was much different from blowout losses to Dayton and Xavier.

Alabama 64, Wichita State 60.

Easily the biggest win of Avery Johnson's tenure saw Alabama survive a 3-point shooting blitz for a wild victory in Orlando. It ended a streak of 21 straight losses to ranked teams for Alabama.

Bama upsets No. 17 Notre Dame 74-73

QuoteLAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Alabama got another big win over a ranked opponent.

Retin Obasohan scored 19 points, including the winning layup with 8 seconds left, in Alabama's 74-73 upset win over No. 17 Notre Dame in the fifth-place game at the AdvoCare Invitational on Sunday night.

"Retin had it going for us tonight," Alabama coach Avery Johnson said. "We came into the game trying to make a concerted effort to get him going offensively."

This was the third consecutive game against a Top 25 team for the Crimson Tide. They earlier lost in the invitational to No. 23 Xavier 64-45 before beating No. 20 Wichita State 64-60.

"That's what I take away, that this team can handle some adversity, and we had a bit of it tonight," Johnson said. "Fortunately the ball bounced our way."

Avery Johnson: "I am pleasantly surprised with some of the things that I'm seeing at this stage of the season" http://www.al.com/alabamabasketball/index.ssf/2015/12/avery_johnson_pleasantly_surpr.html ...

QuoteAfter losing by 32 points to Dayton Nov. 17 and by 19 to Xavier in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando last Thursday, a Tide team that was picked to finish second-to-last in the SEC upset No. 20 Wichita State in Orlando on Friday.

Two days later, Alabama beat No. 17 Notre Dame in its final game of the AdvoCare Invitational on a contested, acrobatic game-winning layup from Obasohan with less than 10 seconds remaining.

The Tide, Johnson said, has come "a long way" since the summer and has made additional noticeable progress since its season-opening win over Kennesaw State Nov. 13.

Alabama, which improved to 4-2 with the win over Notre Dame, plays at 0-5 Southern Mississippi Friday night.

"I think most people thought we were going to go 0-3 in Orlando," Johnson said. "So am I surprised we went 2-1? I am pleasantly surprised with some of the things that I'm seeing at this stage of the season."

The win over Wichita State was the Tide's first over a ranked team since January 2011 after 21 straight losses against ranked opponents.

The victory over Notre Dame gave Alabama consecutive wins over ranked teams for the first time since 2006.

ICYMI: #Alabama star freshman Dazon Ingram out for the season

QuoteAlabama starting freshman point guard Dazon Ingram will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a fractured left foot.

Ingram is expected to undergo surgery on Friday to repair the injury. The true freshman had started every game for the Crimson Tide this season, leading Alabama in rebounds (5.9) and assists (3.3) per game. He also averaged 7.7 points and 1.1 steals per game.

Ingram suffered the injury during practice on Tuesday.

"I am extremely disappointed for Dazon and his family," Alabama coach Avery Johnson said in a statement. "Dazon is a special, multi-talented player that we use in a variety of ways and he'll be missed."

The former Alabama Mr. Basketball has been a steady contributor to Johnson's program in his first year. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard helped Alabama pull off upsets over two top 20 teams early in the season...

#BuckleUp Alabama fans, @CoachAvery6 Johnson and the Crimson Tide are off to a hot start http://ow.ly/VUTj6

QuoteAlabama basketball has a pulse. A beating, competing, winning pulse.

With essentially the same roster as the one that witnessed Anthony Grant's ouster last spring, with a team picked to finish No. 13 in the 14-team SEC, Johnson has made the transition to college coaching as smoothly as he ran the break as an NBA point guard.

He and his Crimson Tide team aren't just winning games, though they are 6-2 after Sunday's 51-50 victory at Clemson. They're doing things the program hasn't done in ages.

They beat No. 20 Wichita State and No. 17 Notre Dame in consecutive games in the AdvoCare Classic in Orlando on Iron Bowl weekend. The last time Alabama beat ranked opponents in back-to-back games was 2006. That was the last Alabama team to win a game in the NCAA Tournament.

http://AL.com  instant analysis: How Alabama crushed undefeated, No. 19 South Carolina. http://ow.ly/X2b5l

QuoteAlabama almost beat Ole Miss. It stuck with Kentucky, but didn't have enough to win.

So it faced undefeated South Carolina without an SEC win Wednesday. And Avery Johnson's squad crushed the No. 19 Gamecocks.

The 73-50 win saw Alabama's lead swell as large as 27 in front of a crowd still buzzing from Monday's football national championship. On a night the school honored three members of that team, the basketball version put on its own show.

Riley Norris scored a career-high 27 with 3-point shooting. As a team, Alabama made 13 from behind the arc.

South Carolina (15-1, 2-1) hadn't won by fewer than four points so far this season. It went scoreless in the first 7:09 of the second half as Alabama scored the first 13 points to blow things open.

This was Alabama's third win over a ranked team after knocking off Wichita State and Notre Dame back in November.

Why Avery Johnson flew to Arizona, returned overnight from Alabama football title for intense practice. http://ow.ly/X4YcS

QuoteAvery Johnson told his son he's exhausted.

His Alabama basketball team had just dominated previously-undefeated South Carolina 73-50 in a rowdy Coleman Coliseum. There were postgame dance moves in the locker room. Spirits were high, but it's hard to blame Alabama's first-year basketball coach for depleted energy levels.

Sandwiched between games with top-20 teams, Johnson flew to Arizona on Monday to watch Alabama's football team win its fourth national title of the Nick Saban era. After Wednesday night's win, Johnson described his schedule from Monday morning through Tuesday.

"The guys, we had an early-morning, 7:00 practice and afterwards I got on a plane out there and got back at 6:00 in the morning after the game," Johnson said. "Go home and you sleep for two hours, then you come to your office and work, watch film and do whatever you have to do. While you're on the plane you're working."

Instant analysis: Alabama drops rivalry game to Auburn in Avery Johnson's first try against the Tigers: http://ow.ly/XiufD

QuoteAvery Johnson will have to wait at least a few more weeks to notch his first victory against Bruce Pearl.

Auburn defeated Alabama 83-77 at Auburn Arena in the first meeting between the two coaches at their respective programs. Alabama won both games against Auburn last year in Anthony Grant's final season in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama (10-7, 1-4) hung with Auburn for the majority of the game but struggled to contain Tigers stars Kareem Canty and Cinmeon Bowers. Canty led the Tigers with 25 points on 5 of 8 from three-point range.

It is Alabama's second straight SEC loss after losing to Vanderbilt, 71-63, on Saturday.

Avery Johnson on controversial call: 'We just had a difference in opinion'

Johnson gave the officials a stern talking to, but was purposefully vague when asked about it after Alabama's 83-77 loss to Auburn on the road.

QuoteWith Alabama down four points and less than 30 seconds left in the game, Avery Johnson thought his team forced a critical turnover.

That's what the official closest to the play initially called, too.

But Joe Lindsay, who looked to be 30 or more feet away from the spot of the play, overruled the initial travel and hit Riley Norris with a foul call. Johnson was beside himself and came as close as a coach can come to earning a technical foul without actually getting one.

"We just had a difference in opinion and I'll keep it at that," Johnson said. "The great thing about coaching in the SEC is they will look back at all the situations that happened over the course of the game and everyone will learn from it."

That play might not have changed the end result but was indicative of a game interrupted by foul calls. Both teams went on streaks and runs, but officiating dominated the flow of the game. Officials called 53 total fouls – 29 on Alabama; 24 for Auburn – and awarded a total of 68 free throws...

FINAL: Alabama 63, Tennessee 57. Bama outscored Tennessee 16-2 during the final 3:57
Alabama fights back, erases big deficit in beating Tennessee http://s.al.com/kcRnk2M

QuoteArthur Edwards passing up two earlier open 3-pointers led to Avery Johnson feeling the need to say what he did to the graduate transfer forward during a late timeout.

"I said, 'Do you remember when you came here on an official trip with your parents. We brought you in because we needed some experience and because we needed your shooting,'" Johnson said. "He was open two times and didn't take the shot. I said, 'Would you please just shoot the ball?'"

Edwards apparently listened.

With the score tied in the final minute of the second half, Tide guard Retin Obasohan passed to Edwards on the wing. Edwards shot without any hesitation, drilling a go-ahead 3-pointer that helped lift Alabama to an improbable 63-57 win over Tennessee Tuesday night.

Alabama point guard dealing with turf toe injury. http://ow.ly/XHqEc

QuoteJustin Coleman sat with Dazon Ingram during Friday's Alabama basketball practice. A gray boot replaced his right shoe.

The Crimson Tide point guard is dealing with a turf toe, coach Avery Johnson said. It kept him from practicing Friday as a precaution but they expect the sophomore will play at 5 p.m. CT Saturday when Alabama (11-8, 2-5 SEC) travels to South Carolina (18-2, 5-2).

Johnson said he aggravated the old injury before the Tennessee game. Coleman played a season-low 11 minutes in the 63-57 win over the Vols.

"Expect him to play," Johnson said. "He probably won't participate much in shoot around. He'll probably shoot some free throws but he should be ready. I'm not even saying he's a game-time decision. Just expect him to play."

The Birmingham product has been coming off the bench in the last five games after starting seven straight. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Riley Norris in the last meeting with South Carolina, a 23-point win Jan. 13 in Coleman Coliseum.

Updated: 4 Alabama players foul out in bruising loss at South Carolina. http://bit.ly/20eVYpb

QuoteA 23-point winner the last time they played, Alabama never found the magic Saturday against South Carolina.

The perimeter shots didn't fall as fouls became a factor in the Crimson Tide's 78-64 loss in Columbia.

South Carolina (19-2) let Alabama hang around despite a poor shooting night. The Tide was just 6 of 24 from 3-point range after making 13 in a 73-50 win in the first meeting...

Alabama had issues all game with foul problems. Four players were disqualified with five apiece including Obasohan, Donta Hall (4 points), Jimmie Taylor (0 points) and Michael Kessens (3 points).

By halftime, the guests had 15 as every starter but Riley Norris had at least two fouls. Obasohan had three before halftime.

http://AL.com  instant analysis: How Alabama won wild one for 5th straight over Mississippi State. http://ow.ly/XSraF

QuoteRetin Obasohan's 25 points led the Tide's comeback effort to win its sixth straight game against the Bulldogs. Alabama did it shorthanded with the potential for more issues moving forward.

Second-leading scorer Shannon Hale was out with a foot injury. That led to a few minutes of rare first-half action from freshman walk-on Lawson Schaffer. Then in the second half, Hale's starting lineup replacement went down with a knee injury. Michael Kessens had to be helped to the sideline after his left knee buckled attempting to corral a long rebound off a 3-point miss. He didn't return.

Missouri basketball team finished with a flurry, scoring 13 of the final 17 points Saturday at Alabama. That would have meant a lot more if the Tigers hadn't fallen behind by 24 points in the second half of an 80-71 loss to the Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum.

QuoteWe lost our focus," Alabama Coach Avery Johnson told the SEC Network. "It's one of the hardest things to do on any level of basketball is to protect a 16-, 18-point lead, and we're not that good where we can just take it easy on anybody, take our foot off the gas. That's what we did."

Johnson was quick to credit Missouri for its resilience.

"You're talking about a team that's been fighting adversity all year, and they continued to play and play and play," he said. "It's not just always about the team that gives up the lead. Let's give Missouri some credit for continuing to fight back."

That credit from the opposing coach was the only reward the Tigers (8-15, 1-9 SEC) could take away from Tuscaloosa as they lost their eighth straight game and their 22nd straight true road game — a streak that began two years ago.

Updated: Alabama upsets No. 15 Texas A&M. Avery Johnson, Retin Obasohan react. http://bit.ly/1mtJ0kP

This was Alabama's fourth win over a ranked team.

QuoteAvery Johnson promised more energy. There would be more life in Coleman Coliseum, the first-year coach said.

It was true Wednesday night. A second straight ranked team that came to Tuscaloosa left with a loss when No. 15 Texas A&M went down 63-62. It nearly ended in disaster.

Donta Hall fouled Anthony Collins with 2.3 seconds left, giving the 93.3 percent foul shooter a shot to steal one. But both clanged off the rim to preserve Alabama's win. Collins, who scored 11 points, hit a clutch 3 with 53.2 seconds left to bring the Aggies to within a point.
