Not a good night for SEC Basketball

VCU beats Tenn 85 - 69
Charleston South beats Ole Miss 66 -65
UMKC beats Mizzou 69 - 61
Georgia Tech beats Georgia 80 - 73

We gotta do better as a conference otherwise this will be another 2 or 3 team bid league.  Hogs really need to come out and make a statement in our first few games.  Our first game against Alabama State won't be as easy as some think, they return all their starters and projected to win their league, we can't take that game lightly.

Here's a run down of their team.

Senior laden team with almost everyone returning, I've got a couple other preseason magazines that have them projected to win their league as well.  Don't be fooled by the name on the jersey, this is a decent team that won 19 games last year, we should win this game handily, but if we underestimate these guys, it won't be good.  Hope CMA has them focused and ready to play.

Good info, we still win by 20 I believe.

It was HOW ole Piss lost that made it so special.

The SEC looks down this year, and we look like a sweet 16 team, the perfect storm for Arkansas.

I remember reading quite a few posts during the preseason suggesting the SEC was up. I don't believe that's the case at all. As of now, this is a 3/possibly 4 team league.

The sec basketball is a complete opposite of sec football.

We might get 4 teams into the tournament, but that is really pushing it.

Geez! Ole miss and Missouri you're killing us!!! I'm not sure how good Georgia tech is.

The Mizzou and especially the OM games were both head scratchers.  OM has a greater effect on our SOS than any other team this year.  We were projected to lose 2-3 in the SEC las night so that hurt us.  On the flip side, our non-conference opponents went 8-1.  The night was below projected, as overall we should've gone 16-4 but instead went 15-5.  SEC has gotta pick it up for sure.

Danny J

LSU was losing at home in the second half just a few minutes ago to a "who" type team. I can't even remember the name is how bad. I am not sure what the hell is going on but damn.

They are a SWAC school, so that means at best their RPI will top out at 250.  We're fans so we can underestimate them all we want. I say easy win, but the team should never go into any game with that attitude.

LSU is playing Gardner Webb. A Division 1 opponent who is usually one of the better teams in the Big South and won a game at Kentucky 7 years ago. Hardly a "who" type team.

I have obviously heard of Gardner Webb but when I made the post I couldn't remember who LSU was playing nor did I feel like looking it up. So I went ahead and looked up their RPI last year and SOS after reading your post thinking "hey....he may be right they might be a decent team".

They were 269 RPI and 329 SOS at the end of last year.

LSU, projected to finish top 4 or 5 in the league, should not be losing at home to Gardner Webb and that was the point I was making above. I haven't looked at the final score so LSU may have blown them out...

LSU won by 11. Certainly that 1st half score was a surprise but LSU doesn't return much past Mickey & Martin so it's not all of a surprise.  Those two are very good, but most of the other guys are talented transfer/FR so they are a bit of a wildcard on how well they do this season.

And I didn't say Gardner Webb was by any means good. Just pointing out they are a team that usually is competitive.  They lost two games to UGA and Mizzou last year on the road by less than 10, and they do return a pretty good all conference player who was dominant today.  The Big South is a different brand of midmajor than Alabama State is my major point.  And my definition of a "who" school is Hillsdale, who stayed with Michigan for awhile.  That wasn't obvious in your statement.

Yeah...Hickey and Stringer are what made that team go. I still think they will be pretty good once their younger guys get a bit of experience.

I'm curious how Josh Gray comes about. Guy was decent at Texas Tech and averaged something ridiculous like 33 pts a game last year in JUCO.

As much as I hate KY, glad they cleaned that up. Don't want them to lose until we kick their tails in Rupp.

I knew it would be tough, I didn't know much about them until I read a few pre-season magazines that thought they would be good team, then after seeing their first game, I knew we would need to bring our A game to beat them.  These guys should win the SWAC easily, and clinch an NCAA tournament spot.  I think they'll end up with an RPI around the upper 100s, this should end up as one of the 150ish RPI wins that help our resume look good.

Looks like Florida is about to go down to Miami.  Down 1 point with 2.3 seconds to go, Miami ball.

Adam Stokes

Ouch.  Florida up by 14 with 9 to go let's Miami go on a 16-1 run and come back to win the game.  We'll need Auburn to somehow beat Colorado to make up for it.  Clemson is also close to losing to heavy underdog Winthrop if they don't turn things around.

TomBigBeeHog

Florida goes down.  Finney-Smith out with broken hand.  Bout to watch Iowa State now.

Down goes Florida.  SMH SEC basketball, conference gotta step it up.  We need to make a statement against Wake Forest.

Hawg4life33

Florida currently constructed isn't a top 25 team; missing Finney Smith with injury, Walker suspended and Duke transfer Alex Murphy will be eligible 10 games in. They started a former team manager tonight and relied on a number of Freshman. Once all those guys come back they will be fine. Frazier and Carter is a really solid backcourt. Not a great start for the SEC though.

mountainhog

I think florida just lost.

Bama sqeaks out a win over W. Carolina.  Riley Cooper starting for Bama. I really wanted that guy.

SEC basketball is painful to watch. One great team, a couple of above average teams, and a bunch of pitiful teams.

BadHog

Don't care what the circumstances are - glad Gators lost on their home court! :)

Auburn played Colorado tough for a half, going in only down 4.... I think they scored 25 points in the 2nd half, and lost by 31.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Hollywood_HOGan45

Wow

SEC basketball is almost as bad as CUSA.

Looks like our margin for error will be extremely small this year in SEC play.

Glad we have a tough NC schedule.

Biggus Piggus

Auburn's big men are awful. That's the strength of Colorado. Their three starting bigs combined for 50 points and 26 rebounds. All four bigs for Auburn had 17 points and 20 rebounds.

It's another way of saying - if Arkansas can shoot well from outside, it's gonna have an advantage over most of the SEC. Half the league has no shooting. Several in the middle have very little.

Western Carolina is bad. Alabama won by outscoring them at the line 32-15. The Tide was outscored from 3-point range 27-6.

Oh yeah, Alabama gets to play Iowa State next Monday. They also go to Xavier and Wichita State in December and host UCLA on the 28th.
