Most teams aren't facing a must-win game in Week 3. Entering Saturday's visit from #Vols, #Gators aren't most teams: http://bit.ly/2x3i8BA

QuoteA season-opening beatdown by Michigan followed by the cancellation of an SEC warm-up game against Northern Colorado have turned Saturday's visit from rival Tennessee into a game with far-reaching impact and long-term implications.

A win would restore the confidence of a young team, calm an agitated fan base and avoid the program's first 0-2 start since 1971. A loss further would intensify the pressure on embattled offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and heighten concerns about the direction of a program unable to consistently win big games under McElwain.

"You could look at this game as almost like a do-or-die type of game," sophomore linebacker David Reese said. "It's like a real big point, a fork in the road. So we're excited."

Meanwhile, a nervous energy percolates within Gator Nation.

Since the McElwain era began 10-1, the Gators have beaten two ranked teams in 10 tries and have not delivered an explosive offense or developed a game-changing quarterback.

Redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks is the next hope under center for the offensive-minded McElwain. But the 19-year-old is coming off a third-quarter benching against Michigan and now will make his second career start on another big stage against a top-25 foe.

Franks has won the locker room, but now must prove he can win the games the program's top quarterbacks have over the years.

"I feel like he's a winner. He wants to compete," Reese said. "He's a competitive guy, so I feel like no role is too big for him. It's just Florida. That's what it is.

"We're gonna be a young team and we're just gonna have to come and play."

The Gators' callow roster features 13 of 22 starters who are freshmen or sophomores, including seven on offense.

Another game where some coaching jobs may be on the line.
Lots of those happening in the SEC this year.

McElwain  :puke:

He's supposed to be an offensive wizard.  Thus far in 2017, they've scored 3 TDs, all by the DEFENSE.

Inept offenses all across the SEC this year.
But that Florida QB does have a cannon for an arm.

Florida, how stupid.

QB saved coach's hide tonight.
He would have been royally roasted for letting that time run on the clock - apparently thinking he had a 1st down when he didn't.

Column from Gainesville: If not now, then when for Butch Jones at Tennessee? http://bit.ly/2jzQhDv  #Vols

QuoteGAINESVILLE, Fla. — Games like Saturday are measuring-stick moments for football players and coaches at Tennessee.

Florida. In The Swamp. CBS. All eyes on you.

You don't just face the Gators. You face the moment. The moment beats you, or you beat the moment.

The moment beat Tennessee on Saturday. The moment was bigger than the Vols.

As a result, coach Butch Jones' Vols lost a third winnable game against Florida in the past four years. And they lost for the second consecutive time in The Swamp on a 63-yard touchdown that defied anything resembling logic. Perhaps someone somewhere has a chart to list the odds of that happening, but I'll hazard a guess. They're not good.

It might be impossible to digest the final play (video available at link) of Saturday's 26-20 loss, but let's not forget the bigger picture here. It shouldn't have come down to that.

Give Florida 100 more plays in that exact situation, and the Gators might not score a touchdown. But if you don't give Florida that chance, the Gators can't score that touchdown.

And let's not pretend this is the first time we're sitting here wondering how it came down to a moment like that.

Tennessee is a flawed team, and Saturday was no battle of national-title contenders. Both of these proud, blue-blood programs have seen and will see better days. The conversation in Gainesville heading into this game focused on whether Florida coach Jim McElwain — a man whose team is the reigning back-to-back SEC Eastern Division champions — was fighting for his job. Fast forward a few hours, and here we are. And people in Gainesville are still asking that question despite McElwain's team again finding a way to beat Tennessee.

This is the third time in four years we're sitting here wondering how a Jones-led group of Vols found a way to lose such a winnable game against the Gators. At some point you have to stop nit-picking and accept the big, bold, bottom-line conclusion: Something has to change at Tennessee.

Is that something a head coach?

And yet, he still coaches circles around Sergeant Carter.
