Pimpco....  ahhhh, I mean Pimco....  fixed income and economic comment from left coast space aliens.... but much of it (once you get by the rabbits and the personal love festing) worth reading.  They might be asshats but at least they are smart asshats (some of them).

Not a link per say, but I look through these once a week or so and see if there are any guests I want to hear.  Tom Keene, the moderator does a good job and the sessions are long enough to really understand what the guest is trying to get across.  They have podcasts and transcripts....

BLOOMBERG On the Economy
M-Th 5 pm - 7 pm ET (Fridays 5 pm - 6 pm ET)
(THIS SHOW REPLAYS 9PM MON.-THU. AND 12AM MON.-FRI. AND SUNDAYS 4AM, 9AM, & 2PM) Bloomberg's Tom Keene interviews high-profile guests as they take an in-depth look at the economy and what is affecting it each day. The best and brightest guests are presented with clarity and given time to expand on their views and offer insights that are deeper than the headlines.

Mostly for us bond geek types....  but, if you are an equity investor and don't have at least a basic understanding of fixed income.... well, lets just say you are missing a large piece of the puzzle.

Is there a virtual stock market type of site out there?
I know that there are one or two associated with brokerages.  I will see if I can find one (I think they are advertised in the back of Stocks and Commodities Mag) and let you know.

this might help ---- but I must admit I really have no idea of what I am sending to you.  All I know is that I once tried virtual sex - caught a virtual infection and am still taking virtual penicillin.  :)

Agian, very welcome, but I am not sure of 'what and how good' the product I am linking.  i.e., I do not think 'backtesting' indicated WaMu would trade most of today at 16 cents!
Have a great weekend!

Anyone have any good message boards (besides this one of course!)?  Sometimes I like the machine gun approach of a lot of people throwing as much material in the fire as they can.  Then I come here for sanity.

Have seen several requests for recommendations regarding selecting an on-line brokerage.  This is not to recommend, but to provide links to some broker comparisons on the net.  Consumer Reports also has one, but I believe you must be a subscriber to get to it.   Here are a few -

Before you sign up with a brokerage, have a clear picture of what you are trying to accomplish and the investment vehicles that could get you there.  For example, are you interested in individual stocks, funds, options, debt instruments?

Good luck!

Universal Bank Performance Report
Submitted once a quarter. More than likely it has more information than you want about a bank's financial status. Seriously I'm talking 20+ pages for some banks. Nothing but numbers. Compares the bank to other banks in its peer group and I think you can also compare outside of peer groups.

This link shows which mutual funds are buying or selling a particular stock and how much. I left the link on BAC but you can change it at the top of course.

Very Nice equity site.  Stock screen is particularly worthwhile.  You don't have to register to use the tools.

Here's a chart site I've used for years.  It's nothing fancy, but I find it very intuitive and once you d/l the applet the first time it's pretty quick.

To me, the outlook for the markets is very much influenced by what is happening in banking. Here are two sites that gives both sides of the debate:

Nouriel Roubini, Dr Doom and the economist many credit with calling the current calamity, has a very good site on his views: http://www.rgemonitor.com/blog/roubini/

Tom Brown, the ex-Smith Barney top-rated bank analyst and ex-hedge fund manager, now runs Second Curve Capital and takes a drastically more optimistic point of view about the banks: http://www.bankstocks.com/   (It's free but requires registration, but is worth it.)

Other good sites:
Dave Altig of the Atlanta Fed:
http://macroblog.typepad.com/macroblog/

NBER economst Jeff Frankel's blog:
http://www.rtable.net/index/rt/economics/371/

Paul Krugman's blog (I know lots of people hate em, but he is provocative and DID win a Nobel Prize.):

the best investment in time on a website you can make, as far as financials, imo. There are many intelligent people in the forum here willing to share their knowledge.
