I didn't know about my great grandfather had been in the military until I was about to go to basic training (Sep 84). All he said was boot camp was one of the best times of his life.
Some years later, I had orders to England. He said I would like seeing different cultures overseas. I asked him if he travelled in the Army. He said, "I was with MacArthur when we retook the Phillipines". He didn't talk much about himself...one of the greatest generation.

That is a great story.  Gave me chills.
