Report: Mullen emerging as possible candidate at Michigan

Dan Mullen could be emerging as a leading candidate to fill the coaching vacancy at Michigan, according to a Saturday morning report.

Football Scoop reports that Mullen at Mississippi State and UCLA's Jim Mora have likely emerged as Michigan's top two candidates to fill the spot left by Brady Hoke. Michigan fired Hoke on Dec. 2.

The report isn't entirely clear though.

It also states that Mullen and Mora are not the only candidates. Michigan could meet with as many as 10 or more candidates next week, which could include coaches in the NFL. It's likely those conversations would take place after the NFL regular season, which has three games remaining.

Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin said last week, he expect to extend Mullen after this season. He told reporters Mississippi State extended the coach successfully in five previous offseasons. He expects this one to be no different.

I like Michigan, mostly because I hate Ohio State.

Also, getting a very good coach like Mullen out of the SEC West can't hurt. I don't think Mississippi State will do as well with their next hire.

Yeah, him being there isn't good for us. I don't think they'd be very successful in their next coaching hire.

I think Michigan is waiting on Harbaugh. If he turns them down, they will go hard after Mullen.

Michigan must have gotten tired of coaches who couldn't measure up to their history.

That's one of the big problems with having a legendary history.

STARKVILLE – In searching for a new defensive coordinator, Dan Mullen wants someone who knows more than Xs and Os.

Many coaches can call plays. Mullen wants someone who embodies Mississippi State football.

"Their personality has to fit here," the MSU coach said. "It's more than just a coach. It's someone coming in that's part of our program. They have to fit our program."

MSU seeks to replace Geoff Collins, who accepted the defensive coordinator position at Florida last Tuesday. Mullen doesn't plan to have a replacement before Mississippi State's matchup against Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31. He'll also wait until the team arrives in Miami to decide who will call the defensive plays.

"We're going to talk about that stuff when we get down there," Mullen said. "We'll get that all figured out. We've got a great program. We'll get everybody coached up."

Graduate assistant John Haneline has worked with the linebackers since Tuesday. In addition to defensive coordinator, Collins also acted as the linebackers coach.

Report: Other NFL coaches, beyond Jim Harbaugh, on Michigan's radar

The San Francisco 49ers head coach and former Michigan quarterback appears to be option No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and so on. Harbaugh, per the NFL Network, received a $48 million contract offer earlier this week from the Wolverines. At this point, no other coach has received an offer to fill Michigan's coaching vacancy.

Michigan continues to wait on Harbaugh, but what happens if he says no?

CBSsports.com's Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that Michigan has expressed interest in a handful of other current NFL coaches, including Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh...

Mullen is the first coach in the 115-year history of MSU football to claim a National Coach of the Year award. He beat out two other finalists in Oregon's Mark Helfrich and Ohio State's Urban Meyer.

"It's a tremendous honor to be recognized as the Maxwell Football Club's Coach of the Year," said Mullen. "It's a testament to our players and staff for everything we have accomplished this year. We are proud of the program we have built at Mississippi State. I want to thank the Maxwell Football Club and its members."

The Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year Award has been presented every year since 1989. Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA head football coaches, sports information directors and selected national media.

Mullen will be formally presented with the award at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala on Friday, March 13 at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, N.J.
