Wednesday night's game was meant to stop the bleeding. Mississippi State had lost three a row away from home. Nothing like a home game against Arkansas State (RPI of 339) to act as a band-aid.

The Red Wolves had only one win this season against a Division I opponent. It came against 0-8 Central Arkansas.

Instead, Mississippi State turned in an anemic performance with a 69-55 loss at home.

Quote"We've got to make sure we stop the bleeding now," MSU coach Rick Ray said. "We had an opportunity here to come to the Hump after being on the road and neutral courts to stop the bleeding. That's what you expected. But it didn't happen."

Worst Defeat

It's been a bad two-plus years under Ray. Mississippi State lost 13-straight in back-to-back seasons. The Bulldogs have lost 19 straight on the road. Yet, Wednesday night hit a new low.

Mississippi State lost its fourth-straight non-conference game for the first time since 1996. The most recent came against a team with 10 new faces on its squad.

Starters MIA

Mississippi State's starters combined to score 15 points against Arkansas State. On the other side, the Red Wolves' starters scored 65.

Trivante Bloodman, Craig Sword, Fred Thomas, Gavin Ware and Travis Daniels shot 5 of 28 from the field. None of them scored more than four points.

That five fell behind 12-4 in the early-going. Ray benched all five. Led by freshmen Maurice Dunlap, Demetrius Houston and Fallou Ndoye, MSU took a 19-16 lead.

Overall, the starting five was -11 when it was on the court.

No Defense

Mississippi State never claimed to be an offensive juggernaut. It's built on defense. Arkansas Sate shot 52.2 percent from the field Wednesday night. It finished 8 of 19 from 3.

"Our offensive woes are well documented and our guys are aware of that," Ray said. "So if we have chance to beat teams, I don't care if it's Arkansas State or LSU, we have to defend well...We lacked defensive intensity."

The Red Wolves attempted 18 shots in the second half. They made 10. ASU also made 4 of 8 3-pointers in the second half.

#Vols fall at NC State in first true road test this season: (FREE READ) http://bit.ly/1ArMl5r

QuoteRALEIGH, N.C. — The Tennessee basketball team lost its first true road game of the season, falling 83-72 to North Carolina State at PNC Arena...

Two former SEC players led the Wolfpack (9-2) past the Vols (4-4). Former LSU player Ralston Turner scored a career-high 33 points. He made 8 of 17 3-pointers. Trevor Lacey, an Alabama transfer, added 20 points.

Josh Richardson paced UT with 17 points before he fouled out. Kevin Punter (14), Armani Moore (14) and Devon Baulkman (10) reached double digits.

N.C. State led 55-38 with 12 minutes left, but UT responded with a 13-1 spurt that included 10 unanswered points to cut the deficit to 56-51 with 8:28 to go.

N.C. State answered with a crucial 9-2 run that got four points via free throws. The Vols never got back within five.

Foul trouble, perhaps the Vols' biggest weakness away from Thompson-Boling Arena, was a problem again. They were whistled for 28 fouls. N.C. State made 26 of 34 free throws. The Vols made 12 of 16.

Refs putting 0.4 seconds on clock, a two-point basket, an "own goal" by Kurtz, FSU leading 65-63.

State air balled a three but Florida's Kurtz who was under the basket, tipped it in giving FSU the win.

Battle of two former UK assistant coaches, Leonard Hamilton and Billy Donovan who got to shake hands twice over the confusion of the game ending.
