Bulldogs add 31st commitment http://dlvr.it/7JTgG4

QuoteBessemer, Ala., three-star guard/ center Darryl Williams became the 31st commitment in Mississippi State's 2015 class late Thursday night.

The 6-foot-4, 304-pounder chose the Bulldogs over offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, Florida State, Kentucky, Louisville, South Alabama, Southern Miss and, of course, UAB.

Williams is ranked as the nation's No. 7 center and the 15th best prospect in Alabama by 247Sports.com composite...

MSU currently has the No. 13 class in the country for 2015...

Mississippi State, UK and others continue to push for South Carolina commit Quandeski Whitlow http://ow.ly/Dwojy

QuoteRecruiting never truly stops until a prospect signs a binding letter of intent.

Quandeski Whitlow knows that first-hand. The Opelika defensive end committed to South Carolina in June, but that hasn't stopped other Southeastern Conference programs from pursuing the 6-foot-3, 221-pound prospect.

Mississippi State, Kentucky, Louisville and Nebraska are the main four schools still heavily recruiting the three-star recruit. He maintains his commitment to the Gamecocks, but plans on taking official visits to all four of the schools, plus South Carolina...

Mississippi State already has 31 players committed in the class of 2015, but the nation's top-ranked program continues to earnestly pursue Whitlow...

"Coach (David) Turner and coach (Deshea) Townsend talk to me all the time on Twitter and say they still need me and want me," Whitlow said...

Out of all the coaches recruiting Whitlow, he says he has the closest relationship with South Carolina linebackers coach Kirk Botkin.

On signing day, it's no contest. So how has Mississippi State gotten on Alabama's level this year? @ClowESPN explores http://es.pn/1xShj5o

QuoteOn paper, at least the paper on which the recruiting rankings are printed, the Alabama-Mississippi State game looks like a mismatch.

But the No. 1 Bulldogs are proving this season that contending for a championship isn't necessarily contingent on stacking up a bunch of top-five finishes on national signing day.

It's a fact that great players make great coaches, but it's also a fact that it matters more what you do with those players once you get them on campus.

Bulldogs haven't finished higher than ninth in the SEC in ESPN's recruiting rankings any of the past five years. There are only four players on Mississippi State's roster that Alabama seriously recruited all the way to the end and/or offered out of high school, and one of those, offensive tackle Damien Robinson, isn't playing this season after tearing his ACL in the preseason.

"If you get too caught up in the hype of recruiting, if you spend too much time trying to win signing day instead of getting the guys for your program, in the end, you can hurt your program and set yourself off in the wrong direction," Mullen said. "It's great if you win signing day and have all these great players. That can help you an awful lot, but you better make sure that they were great players in your evaluations and didn't just have a lot of stars."

I was told whether or not you make it to campus if you sign a letter of intent with a school it still counts towards the 25 per year limit.  They signed 24 in 2014.  Only 20 enrolled. Of those 20, two enrolled in Jan and could be counted back to 2013.  So really 22 signed in 2014 allowing them to sign 28 in 2015 class.    Just a SWAG. I'm not 100% sure.

Mississippi State's Dan Mullen takes heat for pulling scholarship from high school QB http://www.sunherald.com/2014/11/21/5927658/msus-mullen-takes-heat-for-pulling.html ...

QuoteWhile it's not the first instance of a scholarship offer being pulled, Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen is facing some criticism for withdrawing his offer from a Texas high school quarterback.

West Mesquite, Texas, football staff is upset at Mullen for backing away from his scholarship offer to quarterback Chason Virgil, who was on pace to graduate this December and enroll at MSU for the spring.

West Mesquite coach Jeff Neill is obviously not happy about Mullen's decision and he took to Twitter to voice his displeasure:

Miss St. pulls scholarship from our QB Chason Virgil w/16 days til graduation. Classless move by "coach" Dan Mullen

Mississippi State signs five players http://ow.ly/G6SxH  | Two are early high school graduates.

QuoteState and head coach Dan Mullen added five mid-year transfers to the roster for the spring semester.

The Bulldogs signed three instate junior college prospects to national letters of intent while two early high school graduates inked financial aid agreements on Wednesday.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College teammates Donald Gray and Johnathan Calvin kept their commitments and signed with MSU. Gray (5-9, 185) is a four-star wide receiver that caught 55 passes for 989 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall while also returning three punts for scores. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound All-American originally signed with the Bulldogs out of high school in 2013.

Calvin is a 6-foot-4, 250-pounder that made 55 tackles, eight for loss, 5.5 sacks, forced two fumbles and recorded a safety for the Wolfpack.

Gulf Coast Community College four-star recruit Martinas Rankin committed and signed with State on Wednesday. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder is rated as top junior college offensive tackle in the country.

Four-star athlete Malik Dear (5-9, 210) will enroll in January after accounting for 1,592 all-purpose yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior at Murrah.

Memphis Central three-star athlete Deddrick Thomas will also begin the spring semester. The 5-foot-9, 170-pounder accumulated 1,198 yards and 16 touchdowns during the fall.

Another Mississippi State commitment, Oak Grove's Cameron Myers, also signed Wednesday but with Gulf Coast Community College.

Big risers in the Targeted 22: Mark McLaurin & Armani Linton. Also a new prospect makes the rankings for the 1st time http://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/recruitingreport/2014/12/24/womack-mclaurin-move-latest-targeted/20847061/ ...

Quote1. Javon Patterson, offensive lineman, Petal

The state's top prospect is officially a Rebel. Patterson committed to long-time leader Ole Miss in late November and signed a financial aid agreement. He'll enroll in January.

2. Jamal Peters, safety, Bassfield

The Mississippi State commit's recruitment slowed considerably in the last few months of the season, but could former Bulldogs defensive coordinator Geoff Collins' departure to Florida change that?

3. Leo Lewis, linebacker, Brookhaven

Lewis committed to Ole Miss in September, but he's still causing buzz on message boards by making several appearances in Starkville.

4. Fletcher Adams, defensive lineman, Brandon

The Mississippi State commit showed why he's the top defensive lineman in the state at the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Classic. He's physical with a quick first step.

5. Matt Womack, offensive lineman, Magnolia Heights (Previous: 6)

Womack has constantly climbed the rankings ever since he entered the Targeted 22 in the summer. The 6-foot-7, 310-pounder makes his move into the top five after flipping from LSU to Alabama.

6. Malik Dear, athlete, Murrah (5)

Dear is a Bulldog. The early enrollee signed a letter of intent and will be in Starkville in January. The do-it-all athlete made huge plays all season.

7. Gabe Campbell, defensive lineman, Yazoo City

It's easy to forget about Campbell. He keeps his recruitment very quiet and is never one to tweet about visits or favorites. But the 6-foot-6, 250-pounder is an elite prospect.

8. Mark McLaurin, safety, Collins (11)

Mississippi State is getting a safety with tremendous upside. The 6-foot-3 McLaurin, who recently earned his fourth star on 247Sports, has all the skills required to make an impact at the SEC level.

9. Willie Hibbler, athlete, North Panola

Physically, Hibbler is in a league of his own. The 6-foot-5, 220-pounder is pledged to Ole Miss.

10. Armani Linton, cornerback, Walnut (14)

The Dandy Dozen selection often doesn't get the attention he deserves playing at a smaller school, but he's as athletic as they come. Linton made a huge jump in the latest 247Sports rankings, as they tab him the No. 4 player in the state.

11. Dontea Jones, wide receiver, Louisville (8)

Jones is a great athlete. No question about it. But the MSU commit and Dandy Dozen selection sustained an MCL injury that hampered his senior season.

12. Chris Stamps, cornerback, Warren Central (15)

The MSU pledge put his playmaking ability on display all season for Warren Central. He also recently received his fourth star...

Mississippi State on-field success aiding recruiting  http://espn.go.com/blog/sec

QuoteDan Mullen has put together arguably his best recruiting class since he has been at Mississippi State. The on-field success has certainly translated into recruiting success as well. The Bulldogs have the 12th-ranked recruiting class in the Recruiting Nation class rankings. The class consists of 29 commitments, including six ranked in the ESPN 300. The class is filled with players who could add depth almost immediately.

MSU commit Smitherman: "Fans dont have to worry. Ill be in Starkville" He does, however, have other officials planned http://www.clarionledger.com/story/recruitingreport/2015/01/09/smitherman-solid-with-msu-but-has-other-visits-planned/21508195/ ...

QuoteState commit Maurice Smitherman was far from pleased when he heard Geoff Collins, the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator and his primary recruiter, was leaving for Florida.

But the three-star cornerback from Alabama insists he doesn't plan on going anywhere.

"I'm solid with Mississippi State," Smitherman said. "That's like my home. I'm 100 percent a Bulldog. These fans don't have to worry, I'll be in Starkville."

He does, however, plan to take other visits.

Smitherman, who committed to MSU in June, will take official visits to Texas Tech on Jan. 16 and to South Carolina on Jan. 30.

"I just want to make sure, you know, and just see what else is out there," he said.

The 5-foot-9, 178-pounder called South Carolina MSU's biggest competition.

State's recruiting to-do list

Below are the Bulldogs' recruiting to-do list before prospects put pen to paper on Feb. 4.

QuoteBulldogs' 2015 class currently holsters 26 commits, so there's not much room for adding new prospects.

Keeping it together shouldn't be too difficult. The bunch, which refers to itself as #DawgFam15, is extremely close.

However, defensive coordinator Geoff Collins' departure to Florida could have a few weighing other options.

"They need to introduce (new defensive coordinator) Manny Diaz to these guys and get him involved in their recruitment," said Steve Robertson, who covers Mississippi State recruiting for Scout.com. "That's going to be a big key with some of these guys. Holding on has got to be the key for Mississippi State."

Specifically, holding on to Jamal Peters.

The Dandy Dozen selection from Bassfield committed to Mississippi State during the summer but is contemplating taking an official visit to LSU.

The four-star safety is the highest-ranked prospect in MSU's class.

"I really think Mississippi State is where he wants to go. I think he's taking that LSU visit to maybe affirm things," Robertson said. "I think (MSU) will be okay with (Peters), but he's a guy who could create some anxiety."

Another to keep an eye on is Maurice Smitherman, who will visit South Carolina and Texas Tech.

Collins was the lead recruiter for the three-star cornerback from Alabama.

2. Get Lewis

Leo Lewis' recruitment is far from over.

That's a very good thing for Mississippi State.

The Dandy Dozen selection from Brookhaven is planning official visits to Ole Miss, Mississippi State and LSU before National Signing Day.

Flipping Lewis, in the words of Robertson, would "be the icing on the cake."

"It's just the principle of the matter," Robertson said. "You'd be taking the crown jewel of your rival's recruiting class."

I took a look at each SEC recruiting class and each school's biggest remaining targets in lead up to NSD: http://ow.ly/HDyjc

QuoteEight) Mississippi State

National ranking: No. 17

Glance: Mississippi State has a huge class already committed so at this point it's about holding onto who it already has and targeting a few big names in the lead up to National Signing Day. The biggest target is four-star linebacker Leo Lewis, who is committed to Ole Miss but has shown interest in the Bulldogs throughout the process. Flipping Lewis away from in-state rival Ole Miss would be the perfect way for MSU to finish its class.

Top commits: S Jamal Peters, RB Malik Dear (enrolled) and DL Fletcher Adams

Top targets: LB Leo Lewis, DL T.D. Moton and DB Courtney Miggins
