For the first time since 1991, Troy will have a new head football coach next season.

Larry Blakeney announced he would retire after the 2014 season. The news was delivered to staff and players in a Sunday meeting, which left players shocked and reflecting on how much he cared...

Troy athletic director John Hartwell laid out some bullet points for finding the Trojans' next head coach.

As far as financials go, Blakeney made $505,000 per year at the end of his tenure. That's middle-of-the-pack in the Sun Belt. Hartwell made it sound like salary for head coaches and assistants would be very competitive in the Sun Belt.

Hartwell won't limit it to coaches with head coaching or even coordinating experience. Men's basketball coach Phil Cunningham [long-time assistant to Rick Stansbury at State] was a longtime assistant before Hartwell hired him in 2013. Hartwell mentioned the right "fit" and Blakeney summed it up better: "You don't just walk out there and get a college-coaching job. I hear all this about a national search," Blakeney said. "There is a guy that fits this place. He will take over and work at a high rate of speed to get where this administration and board of trustees and athletic administration wants it to get. Football is big, football is king in the South, whether you like it or not."

"I'm not going to call anybody.  I'm not going to pursue any jobs," the 63-year-old Mack Brown said, before adding, "If somebody calls me, I'll talk to them."

Brown made it perfectly clear that the right fit would be of the utmost importance as it pertains to a return.  That and the timing of the inquiries.

"I'm very happy with what I'm doing," Brown began. "I talked to 10 coaches this spring and asked them their opinion of what happens when you get out of coaching.  Some got back in.  Some didn't.  And they all said, 'don't put one minute's thought into it until December, or late November.'

"And then, if somebody calls you and it excites you, you'll talk to them."

Whether that describes the SMU situation is unknown.

A failure to show a financial commitment to the coaching staff at Utah could prove to be a costly move by Utah athletics director Chris Hill

Only three assistant coaches on Kyle Whittingham's staff have contracts beyond June 2015; Dave Christensen, Jim Harding and Taylor Stubblefield. All other coaches have contracts expiring at the end of this season.

It should be noted that Utah has extended coaching contracts earlier in the past, and this is in no way a suggestion that none of the coaches will receive extension offers. Not extending contracts also leaves the door open for any potential changes that may have been needed to help Utah continue to improve in the Pac-12 if things did not go well this season. They have though, so offering to extend contracts is likely.

Utah may have dropped its most recent games, but the Utes are having the best season in the Pac-12 since joining from the Mountain West Conference...

Next at Florida? Maybe RichRod, McElwain, Mullen, Gundy or Stoops?

AD Jeremy Foley himself has to be under scrutiny on this one. He hired Muschamp and must make a home-run hire to replace him. Preferably someone who brings excitement back to The Swamp.

Muschamp lost six of his final eight home games. The offense, even in wins, was like watching a quilting bee. Florida is what it is because Steve Spurrier turned the SEC on its ear. Urban Meyer seemed to be able to coach up some quarterbacks too.

Look for an offensive guy with head coaching experience...

Colorado State coach Jim McElwain: A hot name because 1) He already has two national championship rings coordinating Nick Saban's offense from 2008-11 and ... 2) His profile mirrors that of Urban Meyer.

Marshall: According to the Charleston Daily Mail, Doc Holliday's buyout if he was to resign voluntarily on or before Dec. 6, 2014 is $1.2 million. That is the date of the Conference USA championship game. The payment drops to $600,000 after Dec. 6,. Marshall has already secured a spot in the game. The buyout is $3 million if he accepts the head-coaching job at West Virginia.

Neal Brown is a finalist for the head coaching job at Troy University. Brown was an assistant at Troy from 2006 to 2009 and his name has been tossed around as a potential candidate there over the past few weeks.

Football Scoop expects the new coach to be named by Monday. The site mentions Brown as one of two "significant real candidates," along with LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson.

I heard an interview today where the host asked Jimmy Sextant how many coaches his firm has signed out of the 4 teams leading for the college playoffs at this point.  At first he said all of them but then after they all laughed he said he has 3 out of the current top 4, the only one not with his firm is Dan Mullen.
