Mark Richt, on teleconference, doing a good job of not saying anything quotable about Todd Grantham.

Less than a year after defensive coordinator Todd Grantham left Georgia for Louisville, the two teams will play each other. The Bulldogs and Cardinals were chosen to play in the Belk Bowl at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 30 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Both teams are ranked — Georgia is No. 13 in the AP poll and Louisville is No. 20 — and both are 9-3.

"It's going to be a great challenge to compete with Louisville, period, but certainly Todd has done a very, very good job there," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. "So we're looking forward to the game."

wo of Grantham's former Georgia players joined him at Louisville: safety Josh Harvey-Clemons after he was dismissed at Georgia, and cornerback Shaq Wiggins after he transferred due to a personality conflict with Pruitt.

Harvey-Clemons and Wiggins are redshirting and not playing this year. But Grantham will be calling Louisville's defensive plays on the other sideline.

Oh, and the Cardinals are coached by Petrino, the former Atlanta Falcons head coach who infamously left the Falcons before the season was over to take the Arkansas job.

Meanwhile, Georgia — which just more than a week ago still had hopes of making the College Football Playoff — finds itself in what has been regarded as at best mid-tier bowl. The Belk Bowl used to be the Meinecke Car Bowl, which did not previously have an SEC affiliation and had less prestige under the old bowl system.

But the bowl has more prestige now, argued Georgia athletics director Greg McGarity. The Belk and Texas bowls have replaced two of the SEC-affiliated bowls (Peach and Cotton) that moved up to playoff/top tier status this year.

And prestige aside, McGarity added, after the top tier bowls and the Citrus Bowl, the SEC put no pecking order on the six other bowls. So while it's true that the Citrus shunned Georgia, it's not true that the Outback or other bowls did.

"There may be people that think there are lobbying efforts or lack of lobbying. Those days have gone. Those days have disappeared," McGarity said. "It's almost having to re-program people on the selection process. Because the perception some people have that you fell spots is just not accurate any longer."

The Belk Bowl will be one of 10 bowls this year, out of 39, that has two ranked teams competing against each other...

The new way of bowl selections might have been confusing, but it worked. There are plenty of intriguing matchups for SEC teams beginning with Ole Miss-TCU and Mississippi State-Georgia Tech on New Year's Eve as a part of the New Year's Six bowl games. Dan Mullen will return to Miami for the first time since he won the national championship there in 2007 with Florida, and in an unlikely matchup, the Rebels face a TCU team that has to be upset after getting snubbed from the top four. Other bowl games that jumped out to me included Auburn-Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl, LSU-Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl, and Arkansas-Texas in the Texas Bowl...

at least $84.15 each, the fifth-highest non-playoff price for this year's bowl game schedule according to the website's search engine. It appears that No. 5 TCU vs. No. 9 Ole Miss is a hot ticket.

Now say you're not in Atlanta, but instead in Miami and wants two seats to Dec. 31's Orange Bowl between No. 7 Mississippi State and No. 12 Georgia Tech. That's a bargain, at $5.25 a seat -- the lowest price of any bowl game.

That's a heck of a price difference, probably best explained by distance from the state of Mississippi for each school's fanbase as well as the opponent. Georgia Tech does not traditionally travel well. The Orange Bowl has also seen sliding attendance figures for years, while Peach Bowl officials boasted this week that they'll sell out the Georgia Dome for the 18th-straight year.

Both Ole Miss and Mississippi State have had strong ticket sales (more than 10,000) through the schools, so it's not anything either side is doing wrong. It's just the realities of the bowl game business.

Ten years ago, 48 percent of Football Bowl Subdivision teams played in bowls. This season, 59 percent of the FBS will be in the postseason. A quarter of this year's bowl teams beat zero or one FBS teams that finished with a winning record.

A special nod goes to the five bowl teams that beat no winning FBS teams: UTEP (7-5), Bowling Green (7-6), Iowa (7-5), Washington (8-5) and East Carolina (8-4). Catlett isn't naive as to why these teams and others are playing 39 postseason games and a 40th will come on line next year with the Cure Bowl in Orlando.

"The mothership wants to have programming," T axSlayer Bowl president Catlett said, referring to ESPN...

Sixteen returning bowl games have a new name this year. Some of them are subtle changes. Others are pretty significant, such as the Gator Bowl losing Gator entirely and turning into the TaxSlayer Bowl.

If you go to a bowl sponsored by AdvoCare V100, you're now in Houston, not Shreveport, La. If you're at a bowl sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings, you'll find yourself in Orlando, not Scottsdale, Ariz. The Fight Hunger Bowl, once starved for a title sponsor after losing Kraft, can now feed itself as the Foster Farms Bowl. Returning bowls in Birmingham and Hawaii, both owned by ESPN, don't have title sponsors.

Dyer never spoke with the media during his time in Louisville.

The Cardinals will depart for Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday afternoon for ts Dec. 30 Belk Bowl game against Georgia.
