Don't expect Thon Maker to be the next Emmanuel Mudiay.

Ever since Mudiay announced he was going to play professionally in China instead of attending SMU, there has been debate whether the star guard was starting a trend.

In Maker's case, it appears unlikely.

"No. Not at all," Maker said when asked if playing overseas for one season was an appealing option.

Maker, a 7-foot center who now plays at Orangeville Prep in Canada, is a five-star prospect in the class of 2016. He was born in the South Sudan before moving to Australia for seven years. When Maker began playing basketball, he moved to the United States and has attended multiple high schools since arriving in the States.

Because of his unique skill set and immense potential, Maker is a likely lottery pick whenever he decides to enter the NBA draft. But he made it clear he wants to spend time in college before making that move.

"I've been watching college ball for awhile, and it just causes me to think about that, reclassifying," Maker told ESPN.com. "So I can get ready for college ball. But so far it's been, 'Get ready, get ready, get ready. Have your body ready.' So as soon as I decide whether I'm reclassifying or not, I'm finally playing college ball – not [just] watching it."

...Maker has visited Maryland, Kansas, Missouri, Duke, Kentucky and Louisville, while Indiana is among the other schools in pursuit.

As for the possibility of reclassifying, Maker said he would know more in January – when his semester ends and he can assess how much more work he would have to do...

Jerry Tipton: Recruiting-rich Chicago draws renown for its unknowns

Recruiting is an art, not a science. For all the bloviation, ratings and parsing of efficiency ratios, sometimes you just can't project how good a player can be.

Arguably, two of the best players to come out of the Chicago area were unheralded. One was Anthony Davis [the number one rated prospect in the Class o' '11.]

Taylor Bell, who first covered an Illinois State Tournament in 1959 (the year John Calipari was born), said Davis was a relative unknown.

"Even for people here in Chicago," he said. "We didn't give him a whole lot of shrift."

Of course, Davis had a remarkable growth spurt, which, uh, elevated him into prominence. But playing for a new school, Perspectives Charter, helped cloud Davis in mystery.

"Certainly not one of the high-profile schools," Taylor said. "It was a new charter school that nobody heard of or knew where it was, for goodness sake. They didn't even have a gym. No one had any clue on this kid, really."

The consensus was Davis was posting great numbers. "But he's playing for nobody," Taylor said. "Wait till he plays against some of the Simeons and the Westinghouses.

"Obviously, everybody was proven wrong with his development."

The same is more or less true for George Mikan, the NBA's first dominant big man...

Bell said Kevin Garnett, who played only one high school season in Chicago, is the best player he's seen... Then there's Quinn Buckner. "My all-time favorite," Bell said, "as a person, a player and a leader."

Ignore the points, Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall pleaded.

Sophomore guard Robert Hubbs had his best game of the season Monday, and it had nothing to do with him scoring a season-high nine in a 64-54 win against Mercer at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"I just had to go out there and be relaxed," Hubbs said "Be in aggressive mode, whether that's making my teammates better and just getting rebounds. Then my scoring comes later."

When will the former five-star prospect, the one who picked the home-state Vols over Duke and UCLA, really show what he can do?

Will he?

The mention of "outside expectations" for Hubbs fires up Tyndall. He met with Hubbs about limiting such distractions before the season started. The coach was asked Monday how that is going. His answer, in full:

"The expectations for all these young guys that come out of high school highly ranked, it's frustrating to me as a coach. You know, you look around the country, and guys who are ranking guys at certain levels — five stars, four stars, three stars. A lot of these guys have never dribbled a ball in their life. They wouldn't know a star from a moon or a crater, let alone who can play and who can't. I'm not trying to be offensive, but a lot of these guys are clueless. They don't know.

"That doesn't mean Robert doesn't deserve his high ranking, or another guy doesn't deserve his high ranking, but what that does is put a lot of undue pressure on a kid from a fan's perspective, from maybe a hometown perspective, all those things. And it's unfair. We've talked about it, Robert and I. Not a ton. But the only expectations that matter with Robert are his expectations for himself, and my expectations. And everyone else, no offense, they don't matter. That's it."

Feelings... Calipari's job after a huge road win is managing the feelings of his lead guards and the fan base.

Tyler Ulis was ESPN's #25 player in the '14 class and the #4 PG.  He was a 5-star.

Andrew Harrison was ESPN's #5 player in the '13 class and the #1 PG.

Ulis had the big game on the national stage against UofL. Those who have watched UK this year think he is the better PG.  Of course, UK has used a platoon system to alternate teams and this has been disrupted somewhat with a season ending injury to Alex Poythress.

Don't overanalyze the game. It was a rough game. Don't overanalyze individual players. They're not machines and they're not computers.

A. Harrison is averaging 22.4 mpg with 7.3 ppg and 4.2 assists to 2.2 turnovers. He is hitting 32% from treyville.

Ulis is averaging only 19.9 mpg with 5.8 ppg and 3.7 assists to 1.2 turnovers. His 3P% is 52.2% and hits 50% inside the arc. He does average 1.2 steals per game, trailing only Cauley-Stein in steals per 40 minutes.

WHEELING W.V.- When Antonio Blakeney announced Friday afternoon that he had committed to LSU, there was only one person more excited than the fans. That would be Ben Simmons.

"That's big," Simmons told SNY.tv after a 100-79 win over Whitney Young in the Cancer Research Classic in which he went 11-11 from the field, scoring 26 points. "We were watching it before we came over here. That's a big get for me, because I really know how to play with him. We play really well together, he likes to shoot the ball and I like to pass it. He's always open around the three, so I like to find him."

Not only are Simmons and Blakeney cohesive on the court, they also get along very well off the hardwood.

"We're definitely cool," said the 6-foot-10 Simmons,  who could end up as the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. "We live close to each other [in Florida], so we're friends. I see him a few times a week, so getting the chemistry now is good for us."

Ranked No. 1 in the nation, Simmons teamed up with No. 17 ranked Blakeney during the summer on Each 1 Teach 1 Elite, leading them to the Elite 8 at Peach Jam.

When Blakeney announced his decision to head to Baton Rouge, he cited his relationship with Simmons to be a big reason why he chose LSU. Both players were recruited by LSU assistant David Patrick, Simmons' Godfather...

Within a few weeks, the college basketball recruiting world will know whether top-ranked junior Thon Maker will remain in high school another year or reclassify and immediately become the hottest prospect available in the senior class.

Maker's guardian, Ed Smith, told The Courier-Journal Saturday night at McCracken County's Mustang Madness that Maker's semester at his Canadian high school ends on Jan. 28. They'll take a couple days to evaluate his grades and which courses he's lacking, then announce by the first week of February if he'll stay in the 2016 class or skip a grade, graduate this year and be eligible for college ball next season.

Smith said Maker, who has little else to prove basketball-wise on the high school level, will reclassify if his academic workload will allow it.

"We're going to push," Smith said. "At this stage, it's not that he's overdominating the competition – although he is dominating the position – but he needs to get in a higher-level type setting."

Presumably one level closer to making money.

The most recent mock draft on DraftExpress.com has Andrew Harrison going with the 42nd pick and Aaron Harrison being selected No. 50 overall. There are 60 total picks in the NBA Draft.

The website ranks Andrew as the No. 53 overall pro prospect in college basketball, and Aaron is listed at No. 67. Some players positioned ahead of them in the rankings are not expected to enter the draft this year.

DraftExpress.com's Jonathan Givony says NBA decision-makers want to see more from the twins as this season progresses.

"If they don't start playing better, then that ranking might be optimistic at this point," Givony told the Herald-Leader. "The assumption is that they're going to start showing some potential, at least similar to what they showed in the NCAA Tournament last year. We really haven't seen that yet. With the exception of maybe that one month, it's been a fairly disappointing season and a half so far for them in college.

"I don't think there's any guarantees right now that either of them gets drafted if they continue to play the way they are."

Five-star junior guard Malik Monk is having an outstanding stretch of recent play as he threw down a huge dunk late this week and also had a big weekend in Missouri at the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions.

Monk had a 50-point performance in one game and also won the dunk contest at the annual event.

"They both could use more time in college to grow their games," one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv. "Truth be told, a lot of scouts like Ulis and Booker more. [The Harrisons] both have improved but another year will only benefit them."

One NBA executive said of the twins: "They are unique because they are twins. If they were viewed as individuals without the UK politics, Ulis and Booker would be starting."

New Zealand basketball prospect Tai Wynyard committed to the University of Kentucky on Sunday.

Wynyard — a 6-foot-9 prospect — picked the Wildcats over Texas and Villanova. He visited those schools during a week-long trip to the United States earlier this month and had scholarship offers from all three programs.

He is expected to be a member of the recruiting class of 2016, though he told Scout.com on Sunday that he's not sure when he'll enroll in college and 2015 remains a possibility. Wynyard does not turn 17 years old until next month.
