I think the terms cover him from 27 to 31,  and he's a 2.97 ERA guy who threw 220+ innings each year for the last 3 years.

I'm not saying that any pitcher is really deserving of that kind of contract, but if it's going to happen, you can see why Cain received that windfall.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

I never ever ever approve of big contracts like that for pitchers.  Too much strain on one tiny little part of your body.  And if it goes, you could literally never be MLB quality again.

Bary Zito, Johan Santana, Jason Schmidt, Kevin Brown, Mike Hampton, Chan Ho Park, the list goes on and on.

Give them 3-4 years up to 20 per if they are Cy Young quality.

Contracts like these to good but not great players have basically ruined professional sports.  I'm all for free enterprise, but owners are the biggest collective idiots in the world.  Well, maybe second behind LSU fans, but you get the picture.

I'm sure it's nothing that a $500 retainer can't fix.  Contact JackRabbit Hog for payment instructions.

The contract itself isn't bad;  it gives the Giants some certainty and a long term partnership with Cain,  but also has some very solid vesting options, in terms of insulating the team from the full brunt of the cost;   if he does have troubles, they're off the hook for about $20 million, and he will still be young enough that he will probably have deadline trade value for a team that is looking to possibly either absorb a year or two of big contract or to rework a long term deal for a guy with a strong track record of being a productive starter.

At the very least, it shows what they would have done if Lincecum had been willing to talk about a 4-7 year deal.

I didn't realize that Lincecum was the one holding up that deal. I always just assumed they signed him short term because of his awkward throwing motion. Figured they feared injury. I don't really keep up with the Giants though.

The Giants said  'We will go up to 7 years with you', and he said 'I want 8';  the said '8 is a step longer than we're willing to go, lets talk shorter terms, and he came back with 2 years.
