State will play at South Alabama at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile on Saturday afternoon – the product of a two-for-one agreement between the schools that includes games in Starkville, Mississippi, in 2012 and 2016. The Bulldogs have struck similar deals with Troy and Louisiana Tech, so while it might look strange, the scheduling philosophy has actually worked well for MSU and its fans.

QuoteMany major conference schools are unwilling to play such road games, but doing so makes it easier for Mississippi State to meet its goal of playing seven home games per season – and to do it without paying out huge guarantees. Adding that third game to a home-and-home deal typically reduces Mississippi State's payout to the opponent, Stricklin said.

"If you're playing seven home games, that means you're playing three nonconference home games a year and we wanted to be as efficient as possible with our guarantee money to try and get those games as cheaply as possible," Stricklin said. "And so the two-for-one kind of became something that helped us accomplish those goals – helped us get seven home games and saved us money in doing so.

"I'll be honest, a lot of SEC schools from a financial standpoint don't have to do that, and there's probably some that from an ego standpoint wouldn't want to do it," Stricklin added. "We just thought it made sense for where we were and what we were trying to accomplish."

It's the first time an SEC team will play a game at South Alabama, and earlier this week, the school announced that all 40,000 tickets for the game have been sold – the first sellout in the program's six seasons.

State calls lapses against UAB 'eye-opening'

If Davis Wade Stadium housed a casino, UAB would have left with millions.

QuoteState was successful on 93.5 percent of its defensive snaps last week against the Blazers. Of UAB's 77 plays, 73 went for 214 yards or 2.9 yards per play.

The difference was UAB's five other plays, which totaled 334 yards.

"They took five shots. Most days they might hit two of them," MSU defensive coordinator Geoff Collins said. "They hit all five of them. Credit to them."

The Blazers went bold with deep routes or trick plays five times. The worst result was a 37-yard completion on a wide receiver pass.

The others included receptions of 53, 75, 81 and 88 yards.

UAB finished with 435 yards passing and 34 points. The totals were the most against MSU's defense since Nov. 9 last year when former Heisman winner Johnny Manziel threw for 446 yards, leading to 51 Texas A&M points...

Want to know why Dan Mullen has rotated Dak Prescott and Damian Williams? He explained why tonight on #DawgTalk http://on.thec-l.com/1rYJ6T5

Quote"We're one snap from Damian Williams being the starting quarterback," Mullen said.

Mullen also addressed why he wants to bring Williams in during early portions of the game in the game.

The coach said he wants Williams to be fresh. He doesn't want the sophomore's reps to come after he's been standing on the sideline for three hours.

Williams has guided Mississippi State's offense in 10 drives this season. It's led to one touchdown. Williams is 7 for 14 this season for 78 yards and a touchdown...

Today in Sports: Bonner: Prescott shows true all-purpose threat http://on.thec-l.com/1qTwGtz

QuoteIn six days, his teammates will follow him on the road again for the Southeastern Conference opener against LSU, and the stakes will be raised.

"We're going from preseason to SEC ball. Everything has to improve," Dak Prescott said. "I have to be a better leader out there and just make sure we're going from the first snap to the last snap."

State rotated through quarterbacks during the first two weeks of the season. Backup Damian Williams saw action in the first quarter against Southern Miss and UAB.

MSU coach Dan Mullen suggested the swapping would continue this week. When the game started that notion ended. The only action Williams saw came with 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of a 35-3 game.

Prescott might as well have led the handshake line at that point.

He jogged off the field after a 16-yard run to pick up a first down on third-and-11. He had 139 yards rushing to go with 201 yards passing and a 24-yard touchdown reception.

"You always have to defend him on the field out there," Mullen said. "He had some scrambles in other situations that really kept the drives alive for us outside the framework of the offense."

Prescott helped Mississippi State convert on six third downs in the first half – four with his legs. MSU scored two touchdowns as a result of Prescott extending the drive.

The junior fixed a broken play during his last score. He dropped back on a pass with 7:27 left in the third quarter. After scanning the defense, he pulled the ball down and ran 40 yards for his third touchdown of the game...
