QuoteAs bad as the past two months have been for the LSU men's basketball team, it's been even tougher for one big reason.

A demoralizing stretch that has produced a school-record 15-game losing streak includes an 0-8 Southeastern Conference mark in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center — one season after LSU went 8-1 in the building.

In the first four seasons at his alma mater, Johnny Jones was 26-10 in the Maravich Center in the league before defending its home floor became a whole lot harder this year.

With just one home game remaining against Tennessee at 6 p.m. Wednesday, LSU will try to avoid becoming the first Tigers team in the SEC era to go winless at home while playing an entire league schedule.

In 1944, they had just two conference home games when the schedule was shortened by World War II and dropped both.

It's certainly not something this team wants to be remembered for in this all-too-forgettable season.

LSU (9-19, 1-15) has played better on the road this season, if only slightly better, with its lone league win coming at Missouri 88-77 on Jan. 4 in its first SEC game away from home.

LSU, which has been outscored by 73 points in its eight road games, has dropped the eight home outings by a total of 142 points — including setbacks of 35, 25 and 23 points — going into its matchup with Tennessee (15-14, 7-9).

QuoteLSU basketball team's school-record 15-game losing skid finally came to an end Wednesday night when the Tigers muscled up and played defense like they hadn't since their last victory exactly eight weeks earlier.

LSU won for the first time at home in Southeastern Conference play when it limited Tennessee to three field goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half and went on to a 92-82 victory in front of a sparse Senior Night crowd.

When the game ended, the fans gave the Tigers a standing ovation as relieved players ran onto the court for a mini-celebration, then, for the first time since league play began, headed behind the goal to be greeted by fellow students.

Then, it was another bigger celebration when they reached the locker room.

"It was kind of crazy because we hadn't gotten a win in a little while," LSU's Jalyn Patterson said. "Everybody was happy and smiling. It was a totally different locker room."

It was a totally different second half.

After trailing 46-42 at halftime, LSU (10-19, 2-15) took control early in the second period with an 18-5 run and rolled over Tennessee (15-15, 7-10).

In a 14½-minute stretch of the second half starting at the 18:20 mark, Tennessee made one field goal in 17 tries and committed five turnovers when LSU outscored the visitors 29-17 in that span.
