Report: Tennessee to hire John Currie as new athletic director

Currie, who has been with Kansas State since May 2009, would replace outgoing AD Dave Hart. Former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer was among those who were considered as candidates for the position.

Currie, 45, earned a Master's Degree in Sports Management from Tennessee in 2003, according to his Kansas State bio. He previously worked in the Vols athletic department as assistant athletic director under former Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton.

WNML's Jimmy Hyams reported Wednesday that a member of the AD search committee called the former coach Monday morning "leading Fulmer to believe he had the job." However, new university chancellor Beverly Davenport didn't want Fulmer because of his lack of experience as an AD.

Currie was a "late addition" to the search. The committee eventually recommended him for the job, though not unanimously. The school announced Currie's hiring on Tuesday.

Currie is a former Tennessee associate AD. He was part of the administration that pushed Fulmer out as head coach in 2008. Fulmer reportedly pursued the job in part to keep Currie from getting it...

Fulmer replaced Johnny Majors as Tennessee head coach in 1992 shortly after an Arkansas field goal in Neyland.
