Anyone coming out for this?  Hosted by USD and SDSU at their respective parks -

From the SDSU site - The Aztecs will host the Tony Gwynn Memorial Tournament from Feb. 23-25. Participating schools include Arizona, Arkansas, Cal Poly, Grand Canyon, Michigan, San Diego, and San Diego State. The seven-team field combined for a 259-149-1 record and had 39 players taken in the MLB First-Year Player Draft in 2017.

From the USD site - USD then begins the Tony Gwynn Memorial Classic where they will host Michigan (Feb. 23) and Grand Canyon (Feb. 24) before taking on both Arkansas and Arizona on February 25. Michigan, Arkansas and Arizona all made the postseason a year ago.

I would link the official Tony Gwynn Classic site, but it's been down for a few months.  You can purchase tickets that allow you to get into all the games... a lot of high-level baseball in beautiful settings.

Great early season test. SD will be an a lot nicer area to play in during February then NWA.

I hope to catch a few more spring training games this year.  My only ask - that the Cardinals move from Florida to AZ!!!  I know it wont ever happen, but it'd be AWESOME if they did.

Lol. I was thinking, "WTH" about your post until it occurred to me that SD stood for San Diego, not South Dakota.  8)

If you can, look to stay somewhere near the beach in Pacific Beach, Solana Beach, or Encinitas.  All of these have good beach scenes for guys in their 20s, and will give you a lot of San Diego flavor.  Pacific Beach is pretty meh when it comes to food, but you should be able to find some good taco shops.
Mission Beach and Pacific Beach (PB) will have the biggest crowds during the day... the most tourists.  Del Mar, Solana and Encinitas will have decidedly more natives.

You'll see a lot of hotel availability in Mission Valley (hotel circle)... fine for frequent travelers on business but not to get the feel of the culture.

Here's a decent inexpensive option - https://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/us/en/solana-beach/solca/hoteldetail
Good location with a lot of cool beach options in either direction.

At some point during a day go to grab a burrito at this little shop here - Robertos -- 2206 Carmel Valley Rd, Del Mar, CA 92014
We do the beach in Del Mar a lot, and this is a staple for locals.

At least one evening you guys will want to go downtown to check out the Gaslamp area.  Great restaurant / bar scene... don't get a hotel down there.

Let me know what you guys start focusing in on and I'll provide what info I can.  My wife is a USD alum so we've attended a lot of baseball games there over the years... some SDSU games as well.

RazrRila99

Thanks Beached!  Ill try that stuff out.  Im definitely a fan of local flavor versus touristy/chain type things.

Firstly, I'm pissed they're going to San Diego this year - not that I didn't enjoy the Frisco classic, but it was mostly raining...  I grew up in Mission Beach, so it would have been cool to hang out with family and old friends.

Being the end of February, the beaches will not be slammed - but the water will be a bit cold for anyone but locals in wet-suits (high 50's). I wouldn't plan on boogie-boarding without a rented wet-suit, or better yet - come back in Summer. So being a former local, here are the things I'd be likely to do if I were heading back to the hometown...

  • At least one meal at http://bluewaterseafoodsandiego.com/ - best fish restaurant in SD hands down and not expensive. It's also a seafood market so it has all the ambiance of your typical donut shop.
  • Walk the tide pools to the left of the La Jolla cove and children's pool at low tide (check out the sea lions that have taken over the childrens pool: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_Pool_Beach)
  • The glider port at Torrey Pines - being just a few feet away as these guys step off a 300 FT cliff never gets old for me... https://www.flytorrey.com/ - It's also above the famous Black's Beach (nude beach) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black%27s_Beach - I've surfed there as a kid, but I wouldn't recommend the hike down to the beach.
  • Have a beer and people watch on the Mission Beach board walk - http://www.draftsandiego.com/
  • Drive to La Jolla from Mission Beach staying as close to the water as possible (stay left as possible) and driving through some nice beach neighborhoods while checking out the breaks
  • Maybe a trip to the Ballast Point tasting room? https://www.ballastpoint.com/
  • There's always something going on at Balboa Park https://www.balboapark.org/

As for a place to stay, I'd use AirBNB https://www.airbnb.com/ - I found great places to stay (much better value than a hotel) for most every away game last season (including Fayetteville) and made some friends in the process.

Enjoy my hometown and I'm really looking forward to following the Hogs this year! I plan on being in Fayetteville for the Longhorn series!

North LA area I'm guessing? North County SD for me... so only 40 mins tops with good traffic down the I15.

Just a quick update...
Spoke with Arkansas ticket office. They will not have tickets available. Recommended possibly the event website (if and when it is put up again) or a third party seller.
Also spoke with San Diego State folks and they said tickets won't be available until mid late to late January.

I want to but the wife doesn't want us to spend to much on a baseball trip..... She isn't getting jewelry for Christmas next year so that I can be sure to save enough for Razorback trips.

Tickets went on sale this morning. After over an hour on the phone with Arkansas Foundation office, Arkansas, San Diego State, and San Diego ticket offices, and Ticketmaster, and looking all over the web, I finally got Tony Gwynn Classic baseball tickets in San Diego February 23rd through the 25th purchased. Since the process is so convoluted I thought I'd share it just in case anyone else wants to purchase tickets and go.

You buy Friday and Saturday tickets for games played at the San Diego State stadium (Tony Gwynn Stadium) on Ticketmaster. Their stadium is general admission but it shows on Ticketmaster that you're assigned to a section way out in left field. Actually you just buy the tickets and it's first come first serve and sit anywhere except for the three season ticket sections behind home plate. The tickets were just under 15 dollars each with fees and taxes. Arkansas games here are 1 pm Friday (Pacific time) and 6 pm Saturday. For Sunday's 10 am game tickets at the San Diego stadium (Fowler Stadium)you have to call their ticket office at 619-260-7550. These cost 10 dollars each. They're assigned seats and section 3 is behind the Razorback dugout. We're on row 3 I believe. In both venues each single ticket gets you in all games played there that day.
Took forever and talking to multiple folks to figure out but should be fun!

Question for the board...I looked at the schedule and it looks like we only have two games scheduled - one on Friday and one of Saturday is all that I see. Is this correct? I thought we would play on Sunday as well and I'm trying to make my flight accordingly.  Any help is appreciated.

The schedule at arkansasrazorbacks.com says we play San Diego on Sunday at noon.  Don't know if that is noon Pacific time or noon CST.  We also play Arizona on Wednesday.

  • It's the wrong time of year to go deep sea fishing unless there's a el-nino - fish reports are here: https://www.pointlomasportfishing.com/fishcounts.php (I'm partial to Point Loma Sportfishing - I worked on the Daily Double as a kid).
  • Whale watching feels like a money grab by the fishing boats during the offseason. The Gray Whales are in transit, so all you will see is them come up for a breath as they motor up or down the coast (typically not super close). You can find info here: https://www.hornblower.com/port/overview/sd+whalewatching
  • Not a big fan of the Hotel Del Coronado, it's pretty tourstly IMHO but many enjoy it: https://hoteldel.com/

I haven't been on these boards in a long long time and my Mom just let me know that the Hogs would be in my neck of the woods. I've been living out here for like 6 years now and I can also help out anyone who wants a few ideas or pointers about things to hit up while you're in town.

The first thing or two that i feel I must correct or at least adrress though is the Blue Water Seafood recommendation.  That place is good and you do get a nice piece of fish there I cannot deny that. However they are always busy...like real busy. My wife and I have known about the place a for a while now but everytime we go by the line is out the door. Two weeks ago we go by since we are in the area and there is no line out the door so we park and go in. The line is still there just inside the door. IT TOOK US 40 MINUTES TO ORDER!!!! The line is slow...the kitchen is not..only took us 10 minutes to get the food and the food was quite nice.  Moral of the story..if the line is out the door and you don't want to spend an hour in it, go somewhere esle. My recommendation for somewhere else is Mitch's Seafoods ( http://mitchsseafood.com/main_page.html )  which is right at the sportfishing docks at Shelter Island. Great stuff there, the wait in line is more like 10-20 minutes if its out the door. The quality is about the same, the portion and price is a little less on both in general.  The fish is generally local caught if its a local species. The arking sucks but the parking sucks everywhere in SD.

Sportfishing, as was said above, its just not the time of year for this. Even the rockfish season is closed right now. Most boats aren't running and thge few that are running are just hitting the kelps for Calicos. Save your money for another time.

La Jolla is definitely an amazing place.  It's pupping season at the children's pool so you will see plenty of seals and their pups.  You can even see whales and dolphins from that area if you have sharp enough eyes.

Just becuase the water is cold doesn't mean you can't go to the beach. My wife and I go almost every weekend if its nice out (and it almost always is) and we just enjoy the sun, sounds, people, dogs, and general beach life. Its super relaxing![/list]

    Hi Yetti,

All good advice, but if Arkansans (not sure if that's correct) are like Texans regarding acceptable swimming temperatures then there will be no hog fans in the Pacific during the tournament... lol!  You're absolutely right about hanging out at the beach, it's highly entertaining anytime.

I grew up in Mission Beach (Verona ct. and San Jose pl.), it sure has changed in the last 45 years. I get back as often as I can, as it will always be home (although certain aspects are lost forever - I guess that's true for everyone's home town). I'm pretty envious, I wish this was the away trip last season - I loved how the season turned out, but I would have traded Frisco for San Diego.

Can't wait for the season to start and thankfully most of it can be seen on the ESPN app.

According to the radio broadcast the game last night was not part of the tourney. Used the opportunity to get a game in w/ AZ while out there.
