Just read it.  Coaches don't have much free time to relax!  Funny how the actual practice time is such a small part of the day.  So many obligations; media, off the field stuff, fund raising commitments, recruiting, phone calls, watching film, etc.,

Two weeks ago I was at practice and talked to Coach when it was over.  I asked him how Jen was doing.  He replied, "if I ever see her I'll ask." This is only spring ball.  They'll get a some days during the summer, but this is the norm. 15-16 hour days dealing with the players lives and families as well as there own.  Sure they are very well paid, but the staff on campus from Head Coach,OC, DC, position coaches, GAs, trainers, equipment guys, and those that staff the Lewis Football Center and Jones Academic Center put it a ton of time for the guys on the roster.

Apologies to Fred Smith.  I guess I've driven the Bev Lewis Center too many times. 😀

4 Mil a year so ZERO sympathy from me. Doctors/Nurses/Cops/Military/Teachers spend way more time working in a year and make much less besides maybe a few doctors.
If there's one thing any of you should know as hog fans, brace yourself for disappointment and never get your hopes up.

So what The trashman makes less than these people. What are you a socialist wanting everyone to make the same money?

And I'm sure CBB will lose sleep that he doesn't have your sympathy. As if he would every ask for it.  :puke:

Dude...seriously. All i was saying is i don't have sympathy for his long work days or not getting to see his wife because alot of people have to do the same thing for much less money. You need to relax.

Kinda went overboard didn't ya? Throwing out comments like im a socialist when im probably the furthest thing from it. Hope your day gets better bud.

Well you did bait it...and you got a response...

People choose their professionals....and it is not ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY!

Is it the dedication for the love of what they do?

CBB and his staff obviously loves what they do....

But I agree "socialist" is a little off track...but then again he could have called you a lot worse.

No doubt they put in a lot of hours but football coaches are almost 24/7. Every away game the coaches go straight into their offices and start breaking down the film. Just and example of the many stuff they do that not many people know. I can see why they are paid what they are. Even if I may not agree.

I don't think they are paid based on how hard they work.  Like another poster said plenty of people work harder for less.  But I do think the money and the prestige do motivate them to work hard.  In other words it's a great gig that they don't want to lose it because they let another coach out work them.

When I played, it wasn't unusual for coaches to sleep overnight in their offices during the season.  My position coach kept some whiskey in his office. He had the highest BAC in the BAC!   lolololol. I'm hilarious.

It all depends on who the coach is and your personal opinion of him. If this was about a HC at New Mexico you would use this illustration of his hard work and dedication as justification for their inclusion in a P-5 conference realignment.

I don't get the negativity of the long hard days CBB and his staff are putting in. Argue the results on the field is one thing, yet not give him credit for working hard to improve our program is ridiculous.

If CBB were to leave tomorrow I know he would leave the program with a solid foundation. It is my opinion, and I think yours, that he is close to translating this solid foundation into more wins. I also believe people who complain about this being a fluff piece will not even give him credit if we average 8-9 wins per year.

They some how think the two years of 10 to 11 wins was sustainable. Ignoring our program's history.

I think this team is so close to being far better than it often shows. Sometimes it seems that their lack of higher level success is based in emotional immaturity, sometimes about lack of game experience, sometimes about simply choking under pressure because of all of the above and having shot themselves in the foot so many times, that they just haven't learned to have short term memory loss when they make a mistake. And then, there have been some bad calls at times on offense (but not that many) and don't even ask me to attempt to explain what the heck Robb Smith was doing the last two years...it's puzzling and has really contributed to our lack of success costing us at least 2-3 games each season.

Now where I can agree with many others is in regard to Bielema being far too loyal (a good trait in friends, family and fans, but not so good in a CEO sometimes) and hanging on to guys (staff), trying to help them and hoping they are going to get things turned around while giving them the authority to run their own schemes, to his (Bielema's) own detriment. Bringing Chris Ash here set him back a year. Jim Chaney ended up being the training wheels for the offense, should have tried to get an "Enos type" here sooner that could not only be an OC, but could actually coach and develop QB's. Brought in Robb Smith who initially looked like a genius, but it was clear that wasn't the case after 2015, but he gave him the benefit of the doubt for another season.

Bielema works hard and spends a lot of hours at his craft but let's not be biased, every HC at the P-5 level invests a LOT of time, similar to Bielema's schedule, in the management of their programs. This is more the "rule" than the "exception".

Just to give you an example, a former team mate of mine was on Saban's staff at Alabama. I tried to get him to come back for a Charity Golf Tournament, just a couple of days, so a bunch of us could get back together...a mini-reunion in June. I tried for several years in a row. He couldn't get away because they were in the middle of HS Prospect camps and Saban wouldn't let him take a couple of days off.

So it isn't just Bielema, it is the way of the P-5 coaching life. Nonetheless, everyone should probably be glad that we have a guy who is as committed as he is.

Nope. No I wouldn't. I never base a programs value on a coach. They come and go.  The Lobos have a underappreciated value. Especially to the Big 12 conference.

This was a great article.  To be fully honest, the real champs in this: the families of the coaches/players.  They seem to sacrifice quite a bit.  That said, they obviously know what they signed up for and enjoy the benefits of the life.

@FanonTheHill - youve mentioned conversing with Bret a few times, do the players mom's converse with the coaches wives much at all?

But how could CBB CANCEL pre set appointments with coaches/players only to spend that time with a player who lost his gma?  For Shame /sarcasm.

12247

Maybe Richard will document a day when the team is not practicing.  I am not surprised at those hours.  Hundreds of thousands of everyday people work those hours for years on end and for pennies on the dollar of what BB makes.  They don't take vacations, likely never fly in an airplane, don't have a shower in the office to clean up before going home and noise is way to loud at work to hear any music if any was playing.  Their biggest worry at quitting time is will the old clunker start and make it home.  Not only does these folks work many double shifts weekly, they often do it at 2 separate jobs, thus not getting overtime on either.

And many of these pennies on the dollar workers pulling long hard hours still seem to be more successful at their jobs than BB is at his.

What a hoot. According to the 2015 season Arkansas football generated 57 million in revenues and 29 million in profits. That is a pretty good margin. I'm pretty sure that other people who run companies that generate those kinds of revenues (and especially profit margins), work those kinds of hours, have a shower in their office and fly around in their company airplanes. The fact that you even attempt to compare say, a guy/lady who works in manufacturing as an example, to a completely different and fairly unique job (65 P-5 HC jobs in the country?) is hilarious.

Oh yeah, we are pitting the average working man against a P-5 college football coach. "Up the Republic!", and all of that stuff. Pity the working man, right? Hey, those folks don't pity themselves, why should you? Oh yeah I forgot, you don't really care for our football coach. I'll bet those poor guys who work hard every day cutting and welding steel in building commercial trash compactors in Vernon, AL really resent Gus and Nick. Geez louise, your shtick gets old.

Especially when you consider where Coach Bielema came from.  Bielema didn't grow up in a rich family.  He grew up working on the farm.  He wasn't the son of a coach who used connections to get started in the profession.  He was a walk-on who earned his way via hard work.  He impressed Hayden Fry as a walk-on player and he earned a right to be a grad assistant for him at Iowa.  He worked his way up the coaching ladder.  Everything was earned.

Bielema doesn't have a great win-loss record at Arkansas. Those who get pissed at any and every positive thing written about him are nothing but pathetic weirdos.  If they truly are upset about Coach Bielema's income then they need to get some "fire in their belly" and work their way to being a coach.  Get a college degree.  Grad assist somewhere for barely enough income to survive and work their way up the ladder like he did.

It's weird how those mad at their own sad existence of a "mediocre" life get pissed at others for working their way out of being poor.
