Denny says 'NASCAR drivers should be making NBA, NFL money'

Pretty interesting take.

Under terms of a consolidated national network TV era that began in 2001, tracks receive 65 percent of revenue from rights fees revenue, teams receive 25 percent, and NASCAR gets 10 percent. NASCAR signed Fox and NBC in a 10-year deal, which is in its third season, that has been estimated at more than $8 billion.

That means at a NASCAR owned track, they are getting 75%.  I'm a free market guy, but I think to have more viable teams he makes a strong argument.  Its why we no longer see 45-48 cars vying for 43 positions.

I don't think the drivers should be making NBA, NFL money. It's not a one person team, if he wants to make that kind of money then let him do everything on the team.

His overall point is more money needs to be put back into teams to keep more of them racing.  The cost is putting more and more out of business.

Highly doubtful.  That's one of the great things about NASCAR is their absence in that sport.  He's simply pointing out the struggle of teams below the top tier have and numbers of cars running are showing that.  I said long ago NASCAR should stop doing official sponsors and direct more towards teams needing them.

I agree with the lower teams getting a bigger piece of the pie, but not the drivers.

I think drivers are on pretty good terms.  NASCAR doesn't have the same status as the NFL or NBA.  But I think NASCAR needs to keep the teams from dwindling down.

Considering the direction NASCAR seems to heading financially, I'd say all parties involved will have to make some concessions in order to survive.
