White says freshman G KeVaughn Allen is "as pure of a natural scorer" as there is on team. Can get to hoop, create own shot #Gators

Devin Robinson w/team-high 14 pts in second UF intra-squad scrimmage. Finney-Smith w/12 pts, 9 rbs. A. Murphy, Francis-Ramirez 10 each.

Quote-- After sitting out last week with a concussion, Florida freshman guard KeVaughn Allen is back at practice and impressing coaches: "Great to have KeVaughn back," White said. "He's such an offensive weapon. He's probably as pure of a natural scorer as we have on our team. He can go get baskets, he can create his own shots, he's really, really athletic. But he's got a ways to go, just like our other two freshmen."

Kennedy high on Mike White's recruiting ability - http://brockway.blogs.gatorsports.com/13234/kennedy-high-on-whites-recruiting-ability/ ...

QuoteWhite worked as assistant coach at Ole Miss, his alma mater, under Kennedy from 2004-11. Kennedy said White has a knack for finding under-the-radar players.

"For us, we've got to be dogged in our pursuits," Kennedy said. "We're not gonna just walk in a room and everybody is going to want to sign a national letter for us.

"So we have to really work. And we have to find guys like Chris Warren, that no other major recruited him, or Stefan Moody, or Marshall Henderson, where some guys may say this flaw or that flaw, or may miss on, we've got to find them and develop them. And Mike was very good at that for us and very good at that at Louisiana Tech."

Asked about his experiences recruiting at Louisiana Tech and Ole Miss, White said: "At places like that you need to learn to be as efficient as possible and where to not spin your wheels and where to invest most of your time. Or otherwise you may lose on plan B and plan C."

At Florida, White has so far landed a pair of three-star recruits in his first 2016 recruiting class — guard Eric Hester and forward Dontay Bassett. Both go to the same high school (Oldsmar, Fla., Christian). Florida has been in on a few five-star recruits, including a recent visit from 6-10 center Udoka Azubuike (No. 22 ESPN Top 100, Jacksonville Potter Christian), who remains undecided...

UF working on avoiding foul trouble - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20151029/ARTICLES/151029615? ...

QuoteMike White has made cutting down on fouls a point of emphasis in his first preseason with the Gators.

"It's really important for us," White said. "And I have to tell them all the time to make sure not to watch our staff noon ballgames because if they emulate some of the ways we play defensively, they'll continue to foul more and more."

There's a fine line between physical, aggressive defense and hacking. In 2013-14, behind an experienced core of four senior starters, Florida averaged just 15.7 per game en route to a Final Four season. But last season, that number jumped to 16.9 fouls per game, which ranked 78th in the nation in Billy Donovan's final year as UF's coach.

"We talk a lot about it," Florida senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith said. "I think last year Coach D used to say, teams used to be in double-bonus by 10 minutes."

Added White: "Especially if you're gonna press, I just think you have to cut back on the amount of fouls. The free-throw discrepancy last year we've got to fix and of course, the free-throw make discrepancy we've got to fix as well. For a pressing team, we can't allow teams the easy way out by fouling them and stopping the play."

Florida coach Mike White peered down the stat sheet shortly after his team's 89-42 exhibition win Thursday over Palm Beach Atlantic and one number stood out.

"Twenty-three turnovers," White said. "That's scary."

The Gators turned the ball over 23 times, including 16 in the half, but forced 30 turnovers in the frenetic-paced win. Five Florida players scored in double figures, led by 12 points apiece from senior forward Dorian Finney-Smith, sophomore forward Devin Robinson and freshman guard KeVaughn Allen. Sophomore center John Egbunu had 11 points and six rebounds while sophomore guard Chris Chiozza had 11 points and seven assists.

White talks UF signing class - http://brockway.blogs.gatorsports.com/13277/white-talks-uf-signing-class/ ...

QuoteMike White discussed the signings of 2016 prospects Eric Hester (6-3 combo guard) and Dontay Bassett (6-8, forward) to Letters of Intent.

Both play at the same high school, Oldsmar Christian, outside of Tampa. Neither are rated in ESPN.com's Top 100 prospects, though Rivals.com rates Hester as a four-star prospect and as the 87th best player in the 2016 class.

"Eric is a guy who can play a couple of positions, he can be a lock down defender, he's got a little bit of Brandone Francis-Ramirez in him, but he's also got a little bit of DeVon Walker in him as well. He's got tremendous length, he's 6-3 with a 6-10 wingspan. And Dontay Bassett is a four-five guy who's been only playing basketball organized for a couple of years, this is his third year, he's 6-9 with a 7-1 and a half reach. He's very young for his grade. Both those guys, they're proud Gators and we're proud to have him."

The Gators still have at least one more scholarship to give with the departures of seniors Alex Murphy and Dorian Finney-Smith next season (UF currently has 12 scholarship players on its roster). The highest-rated prospect left on the board for the Gators is center Udoka Azubuike (6-10, 280), a five-star prospect from Potters House Christian School in Jacksonville...

White says it's his responsibility to get UF's point guards playing better - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20151210/ARTICLES/151219981/1136/gximg.ny.publicus.com ...

QuoteFlorida coach Mike White understands the demands of the point guard position.

As a four-year starter at point guard at Ole Miss, White directed an offense that reached three straight NCAA Tournaments from 1997-99.

So White views it as his responsibility to get point guards Kasey Hill and Chris Chiozza on track for the rest of the season.

Improved point guard play will be one of the keys for Florida in its herculean challenge Saturday at No. 1 Michigan State. Chiozza and Hill both struggled in Tuesday night's 66-55 loss at No. 17 Miami. Both players fouled out and combined for more fouls (10) than points (Eight). Hill went 1 of 7 from the floor with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1 to 3, while Chiozza was 1 of 4 from the floor with a 3 to 2 assist-to-turnover ratio.

"Kasey, I thought he took good shots, just didn't convert," White said. "Made a couple of decisions, I know, he wished we had back, offensively and defensively, a couple of fouls. Chris didn't have his best game, but Chris has had a good year."

Despite blowout win over Jacksonville, Florida coach Mike White not pleased w/first-half effort - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20151222/ARTICLES/151229891 ...

QuoteFlorida coach Mike White was worried this week about what he called "Christmas-itis", the tendency for players to look ahead to the holiday break and not take an overmatched opponent seriously.

"I wasn't pleased with our physical and mental effort," White said. "Defensively, I thought the first half was our worst defensive half of the year. We did some things offensively."

White sent a message when he benched both Finney-Smith and Robinson to start the second half for lack of effort.

"I was disappointed with our frontline starters, no energy, transition defense wasn't very good," White said. "One-on-one defense wasn't very good. Ball screen defense wasn't very good, missed some block outs.

"It's disappointing because every time you are between the lines, the goal is to get a little better and take another step forward in the right direction. If we want to be average, we accomplished that tonight. If we want to be a really good team, we didn't take a positive step."

UF-FSU adv: Another big test for #Gator backcourt v. athletic 'Noles - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20151229/ARTICLES/151229701 ...

QuoteUF's backcourt will get another stiff test tonight at the O'Connell Center against Florida State. FSU's backcourt is young, athletic, interchangeable and at times dynamic in transition.

"They're as talented of a team as we'll play all year," White said. "They're as big and long and as athletic a team as we'll play all year."

After the Miami loss, in which point guards Kasey Hill and Chris Chiozza combined for more fouls (10) than points (six), White challenged his guards to play better. Since then, UF's guards have responded. Hill is averaging 9.7 points and five assists over his last three games off the bench, while Hill and Chiozza have combined for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 25 to 4 in that same span. Freshman guard KeVaughn Allen (13 ppg over his last two games) is starting to gain more confidence as a scorer.

"We're taking good shots," White said. "We're delivering the ball to the right people at the right time in the right spots. Chris continues to shoot the ball well, and then defensively, both of those guys are playing well for us. They're at the point of attack, with our press and with our halfcourt and with our man-to-man defense. Those guys kind of lead us in that area. They lead our biggest strength and that's been our defense."

FSU's teams have forged an identity around defense under 14th-year coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles are giving up 69.7 points per game, but remain adept playing the passing lanes. FSU is forcing 15.8 turnovers per games.

PROBABLE STARTERS

UF-Georgia adv: White gearing for SEC coaching debut - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20160102/ARTICLES/160109975 ...

Florida Georgia Line:  Gators -7.5

QuoteFirst-year Florida coach Mike White is aware of the competitiveness of Southeastern Conference basketball.

As a point guard at Ole Miss from 1995-99, White played in the league during what some consider its highest point of success. Kentucky won national titles in 1996 and 1998 and played in the national title game in 1997. Mississippi State also reached the Final Four in 1996. White's Ole Miss teams reached the NCAA Tournament in three of four seasons.

White, who joins LSU's Johnny Jones as the second former SEC player currently coaching in the conference, will make his league coaching debut tonight when the Gators host Georgia.

"The SEC, it's an awesome league to be a part of, student athletes, coaches," White said. "It's just a lot of proud storied traditions and programs. Just really appreciative to be a part of it. It will be neat to start it at home."

Smoked on Rocky Top -- Volunteers humble Gators, 83-69 - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20160106/ARTICLES/160109791 ...

QuoteKNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After a promising SEC start, Florida was hit with a harsh dose of reality Wednesday night.

The Gators were out-hustled and out-muscled in a disheartening 83-69 loss at Tennessee.

Florida trailed by as many as 30 points in the second half.

Undersized Tennessee outrebounded Florida 49-40 and outscored the Gators 32-24 in the paint.

The Gators had no answer to stop Tennessee senior guard Kevin Punter, who led the Vols (8-6, 1-1 SEC) with 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Tennessee improved to 8-0 at home.

Freshman guard KeVaughn Allen led four Florida scorers in double figures with 18 points.

Disappointing loss has UF searching for answers - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20160107/ARTICLES/160109762 ...

QuoteFlorida showed in its 83-69 loss at Tennessee on Wednesday night that it can't afford any off nights from an effort standpoint in conference play.

Now the Gators (9-5, 1-1 SEC) return home to prepare for a Saturday matchup with an LSU team that's as talented as any team in the SEC.

Florida played with an alarming lack of hustle in the Tennessee loss. Also, Florida was caught out of position defensively on a number of trips down the floor in the first half, which allowed Tennessee to build a 53-31 halftime lead.

"We didn't do anything we practiced," Finney-Smith said.

Coaxing consistent effort and dedication out of the UF team was difficult for former Florida coach Billy Donovan during last season's 16-17 campaign. First-year coach Mike White is dealing with the same issues. Florida came out flat in a 66-55 loss at No. 12 Miami last month. The Gators dropped to 1-3 on the road this season, with the lone win coming in the season-opener at Navy.

"I'm just disappointed in the effort, in the mental makeup, and the character in which we played," White said. "We were a different team tonight than we were Saturday (in the win over Georgia), we were a different team than we were when we played at Michigan State. It's unacceptable. It's not who we need to be as a program."

Gators fall short at Texas A&M http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20160112/ARTICLES/160119861 ...

QuoteCOLLEGE STATION, Texas — Florida had a chance to steal a win on the road against a ranked team Tuesday night.

But missed free throws and turnovers proved costly in a 71-68 loss to No. 15 Texas A&M at Reed Arena

Florida went 4 of 12 from the free-throw line and had 16 turnovers, which Texas A&M converted into 21 points. Jalen Jones led Texas A&M (14-2, 4-0 SEC) with 26 points, with Danuel House adding 22 points.

White said there were times KeVaughn Allen could have been more aggressive shooting the basketball. "We need him to be".

Some observations following UF's 71-68 loss to Texas A&M at Reed Arena

QuoteMike White credited Alex Caruso's defense in shutting down freshman guard KeVaughn Allen, who was held scoreless during 18 foul-plagued minutes against Texas A&M. But White also felt the 6-foot-2 Allen could have been more aggressive during some stretches. Allen took just four shot attempts, going 0 of 4 from the floor. "He's had a few games like this, where you dare him to shoot it or challenge him to shoot it, regardless," White said. "I pulled him over at one point during a foul shooting situation and told him how badly we needed him to shoot the basketball. I thought he passed up two or three open ones to drive it and I'm not sure the result would have been as good if he would have just jumped up and let it fly. We're not good enough offensively to not have him and Dorian (Finney-Smith) be really aggressive for us, regardless of what their percentages are."

Michael White excited for #OleMiss homecoming. "A place that's near and dear to my heart." http://www.scout.com/college/ole-miss/story/1632291-white-excited-ole-miss-homecoming ...

Quote"I'm excited about it, honestly," he said. "I haven't had a lot of time to think about it to this point, really. We've got our hands full with Texas A&M. I've watched the last couple of games on TV. It's right around the corner, an opportunity to go back to a place that's near and dear to my heart - my wife and I both. We spent 11 years in Oxford. Four of our five children were born in Oxford.
"It's not only Ole Miss, it's Oxford that's dear to us. It's an awesome town. It's a great place to raise a family. My wife and I both graduated and had great experiences there. We have a lot of friends there. I'm proud of that program; I'm proud that I was a part of it. It's an opportunity to compete against all of that, to compete against a good team. It's exciting. I'm sure 24 hours out it will a lot more nerve-wracking than it is right now."

ICYMI, White, Gators trying to solve FT hex | Hoops Scoop http://brockway.blogs.gatorsports.com/13342/white-gators-trying-to-solve-ft-hex/ ...

Quote"I've said it for the last couple of months and I stand by it. I can't imagine there's a team that shoots more fatigued free throws in practice, in between live segments, in the country," White said. "Maybe there are teams that do it. I'm doing way more free-throw shooting in the middle of practice than I've ever done. Way more."

White said he's employed an "80 percent" drill in practice in which after a segment in which the Gators are getting up and down the floor and breathing heavy, he'll put all of his players on the line and set a goal of making 80 percent from the free-throw line.

But can they replicate that performance in the game?
