Edmonds was a waste-Iguchi is a much bigger acquisition. I think Prior was a low cost risk for you guys. As a Cub fan, don't expect much from him other than a few spot starts in July and August. By September, the Pads are going to need to buckle down, and Prior will be seen as a liability. The NL West is gonna be wild! I live in Denver and have adopted the Rockies as my second favorite team, so I know plenty about the West. Any team in that division outside of SF can win it. The wild card winner will absolutely be from the West again. Got to say that I gained tons of respect for the Padres last October 1-that was indisputably the best baseball battle I ever attended. Go Cubbies, and Go Rockies!!!

what's so great about Uguchi- his career has been a US Cellular Field illusion and now he's going to the mother lode of offensive depression Petco Park; this is possibly his future:

Pads are treating Schmidt with kid gloves. Schmidt is listed by Baseball America as one of the Pads top 10 prospects right now. Its a good farm system: Chase Headley (3B) and Matt Antonelli (2B) are two position players poised to contribute very soon.

Antonelli is the reason the Pads want a one-year stop-gap at 2B. Headley may push Kevin Kouzmanoff to LF, although right now the plan is for Headley to work on OF in spring training with a shot at winning a 50/50 platoon. More likely, they'll hope they can transition Kouzmanoff to OF this year and install Headley in 2009 as their 3B.

Headley's minor league numbers are WOW, but are inflated due to the league. He's still considered a high-average, 20-HR guy in the long run.

i saw headley play a couple of times last season in little rock. kid has a great bat and decent glove. he got called up for a few weeks while kouzmanoff was on the dl. he did alright. antonelli is another guy you mentioned that could turn out to be a solid player.

+ 1 to all who responded. Following the Padres is tough from here in Fayetteville and keeping up with their minor leaguers is almost impossible. Look out for Khalil and the boys in '08 and if your ever in San Diego you should try to catch a game whether your a fan or not, Petco is terrible if your trying to put up big offensive numbers but it may be one of the nicest places to watch a game in the League.

Gotta love that rotation in that park. Prior is in town with Maddux. I wonder if Maddux can teach him to be a pitcher, not a thrower. If so, yowza: a rotation of Peavy, Young, Maddux, Prior...dang.

I don't think Prior should be in the rotation, at least not this year;  use him to spot start, and in long relief-  give him a season of building back arm strength and durability, getting some innings under his belt without putting too much of a burden on him to excel early.   If he pitches well, then great-- they've got a guy they can depend on;  if he pitches poorly, then they're not out a great deal, and don't have to juggle the rotation on his account.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

There comes a point where every young pitcher quits being a thrower and starts being a pitcher. I'm not sure Prior (or Wood) ever got there.

haven't seen anybody mention this so......

From the San Diego Union-Tribune -

Pitcher Nick Schmidt, the Padres' first-round draft pick this year, had reconstructive elbow surgery Wednesday and will miss the 2008 season.
It's the second time in three years a Padres first-round pick required such surgery; Cesar Carrillo, drafted 18th overall in 2005, missed last season and isn't expected back until May.

Both Schmidt, who was drafted 23rd overall, and Carrillo logged high innings totals in college, but Padres Vice President of Scouting and Development Grady Fuson doesn't see a connection.

"This guy never had any problems at Arkansas and was given a clean bill of health before the draft," Fuson said of Schmidt. "I don't know what we could have done differently. It's such a hard thing to figure out, what caused it, where it starts."

I think once Spring Training is over and the regular season starts up we should get a new thread going to keep up with the Padres. Just post the scores, any news, and throw around the occasional +1 from time to time. What do you say guys? Throw out any name ideas, I'm thinking......"Friar Fanatics" or "Khalil's Krew"

I'm still gonna have to go with Friar Fanatics although we could always go with "Barret stepped on Holiday's hand and it never touched the plate." but lets not live in the past.

By the way I saw a thread on here in another forum the other day about the most exciting entrances in college football talking about Clemson and Auburn and stuff like that. I just wanna go ahead and make Trevor Hoffman's Hell's Bells entrance my nomination for Most Electrifying Entrance In All Of Sports. Those bells instantly turn a Tuesday night, 2-0 yawner against the Giants into game 7 of the World Series. Everybody goes ape s**t and no one sits down til the game is over. Its an amazing thing to witness and you can't truly appreciate it til you've seen it live.

Agreed. Once a closer loses his intimidation factor its all downhill from there. Batters aren't scared of him anymore and it could start to get ugly. Ex: See Gagne. (however, in no way I'm a saying he's as bad as Gagne)

And what are yall's thoughts on Hairston? I've never liked him but I guess if he keeps single handedly carrying us at the plate I'll have to learn to love him.

The pitchers were Joe Thatcher and Glendon Rusch and after that performance I dont know that they could pitch for our AA squad.

Also despite them sucking Germano threw a hell of a game and our starting rotation is looking pretty solid. Which brings me to my next point, do we even need to play the games when Peavy's on the hill or can we just go ahead a add 1 to the win column.

Hoffman almost blew another save last night against LA.  Ooooh I was gettin pissed!!  "Here we go again" I said.  He struck out the last guy and the ball game was over.  Our bullpen needs to step up and get there stuff straight or else it's going to be a loooooong season for us. LA scares me at times with their offense, but I think we match up well with them.  We need to keep winning in order to catch up with ARZ.  They look like they can run away with it if we're not careful.

Don't get me wrong I love it, but what happened to the Rockies? They sure are making it a lot easier on us only having to compete with the Dodgers and D-Backs.

And as for your previous statement, yes, if we don't get our bullpen in check we're gonna be down 15 games at the All-Star Break. Webb, Harren, and Owings are solid and their bullpen doesn't blow games. The dodgers don't necessarily worry me as much, not alot of consistency on the mound or at the plate. They'll look like WS contenders one night and look like they couldn't beat the Rangers the next.

Honestly, I think we'll be alright.  We just have to take care of our own (win win win) and it should be fine.  Bull Pen must contribute and all players must stay healthy (nockin' on wood) in order to have a shot at the WS.  And yes I said the WS, if the Rockies can do it - we can.

I have no idea. I don't know anything about it. I just click the first server on the list, follow some people around and stare in awe at the pets that look like He-Man's battle cat.

Arkansas Football, it's the players running through the "A", hog hats, it's more than 70,000 fans calling WOO PIG SOOIE. Arkansas football, it's the state of Arkansas banding together behind one team and a mascot like no other. Those select few who put on the jersey are chosen, they wear the colors, they pay the price, and they succeed. They are exceptional, they are Razorbacks. Together we stand as tall as the tower of Old Main. Our memories are etched in stone like names on Senior Walks and our blood flows Razorback Red. For 100 years, we've been Hog Wild and today we continue the tradition. We are Arkansas Razorbacks!

I'm trying to figure out whats goin on with these Padres.  ??? Obviously they can't hit - that's a given.  Anyways, is going to be a LOOOONG season if they don't get their crap straight soon.  Just a horrible start to the season!  They can't do anything right.  I feel sorry for the starting pitchers, it's just a waste of talent.  I'm getting fed up with this crap!  Someone, help PLEASE!!

Maybe this is the desperation talking but hear me out.....

Obviously our team sucks at the plate with the exception of AG, (this hurts because I love Khalil and Kouz), but should we have made a move in the free agent market for a big stick to maybe plug in? Obviously Frank Thomas wouldn't have worked because we don't have the DH and we wouldn't play him over AG but there is a REALLY big left-handed stick on the FA market that could be instant offense and keep people from working around AG. (Gulp) I can't believe I just referenced "he who shall remained unamed from the bay" but like I said we need to do something.

I know this isn't the answer but I was just gonna see if anyone out there knew of some guys we could potentially trade for or pick up through free agency.

Also I still think we should bring Headley up and move Kouz to left...give me your thoughts and keep in mind I still love the Padres but this spiral to the bottom of the NL is killing me when we have one of (if not the best) starting rotation in the majors.

gutshot

They were talking about this on the Braves feed during tonight's game....about how speed on the basepaths could be the way to go with the Padres since the power game isn't there, especially in that ballpark.  Personally I don't like the guy's game, but a couple of Juan Pierre type players at the top of the order could use those huge gaps to their advantage.  Maybe even a guy like Furcal since he's a free agent this year.  I was shocked when I saw Brian Giles leading off tonight.  I still think of him as the 35 hr guy that he was in Pittsburgh, but I guess those days are over.

I know one thing...Adrian Gonzalez scared the crap out of me in that 9th inning with that bomb that hooked just foul.  I don't get to see him play much, but that guy's a hitter.  I sure thought he got Royce Ring tonight.
