Sadly, I have reaggravated the injury to my foot doing intervals last week.  So once again I find myself on the sidelines, not able to run.  I've got an appt with a foot doctor set for Monday.  He's a runner too, so he should be able to help.

What sucks about it is the only other way I LIKE to exercise is play tennis.  I have tendonitis in my shoulder and can't do that either.

Didn't know a body could start falling apart at 34...   >:(

Idahog

Sorry to hear that.

I had read somewhere (I think Men's Health) that your body starts to break down around 30 years old.

It sucks to hear about your foot injury.

Speaking of intervals, how do you run your intervals?  I've got to start doing them more to get a bit more speed in my runs.

Let me explain how this works...  If I have four really good meals in a row, I am thankful for that and I do not withhold my thanks for fear that the next meal might suck.

DeltaBoy

Wait to you hit 40 and it all FALLS apart.

At about 30 it sure seems to start.  I know this, with no changes in our lifestyle, at age 30 we will gain .5% body fat per year.

And yes, it sucks that I tore my calf last summer and still feel it today.

DeltaBoy

I was in great shape at 29 Got married and it all went to pot after I tore up my ankle at age 32. ( I had been running 5 miles a day 3 times a week)  I have not been able to run over a 1/2 mile in 10 years. And according to the DR there is no way to fix it.  So I finally quit feeling sorry for myself and started back to Bicycling and Weight Lifting.    I Still MISS Running!

I went to the local high school track.  My method was sprint the straights, trot the curves, no walking.  Did this for four laps (1 mile).  Then I'd trot a lap to regain my breath.  Then repeat the process as many miles as I can.  (usually 3-5)

Good thing my dad is thin at 62.  I have pretty good genetics in that sense.

What foot doctor are you going to?

Dr. John White out of Texarkana.  He is a distance runner too.  Said my bones are "jamming" at the joint giving me fits.  He said a major nerves runs through it.  Only ways to fix is to have surgery or $300 shoe inserts to help increase stability, reduce motion, and distribute the force of running more throughout my foot.  It will be a few weeks before insurance will say if they will cover or not.  I believe they won't since it doesn't affect my walking.

My weightlifting has been put on hold for atleast another week.  I jammed/tore tendons in my thumb.  I'm not sure of the severity of it, but it hurt like a sombitch. It wasn't ur traditional jam.  My thumb crunched and popped and has been hurting for the last week now.

Foot still bothers me walking from time to time.  Running still out of the question.  Gaining weight and hating it!

I am still waiting to hear back from the foot doctor as to my insurance coverage for inserts.

I actually have a bike and ride it. but, I finally started trotting again. Put in two miles at the track. I trimmed the insert of my hurt foot to divert the force from the bad joint to the others like my foot dr said.  So far so good. Think I am done with intervals.

Look at Lance Armstrong, the guy is now 37, had cancer and still won the hardest bike race in the world. And now again going for it. So for us over 35 there's hope!

How are you doing Now TOM???

Still idle.  I've tried twice with bad recurring pain.  Been to 2 foot doctors.  Not an operable fix.  Nothing showed on MRI or x-ray.  So the perscription foot inserts will have to work their magic and I have to quit running intervals as I know that is the cause both times.

My running is REALLY put on hold now that I have three broken bones in my legs (two tibias and one fibula).  Also suffered nerve damage and the loss of a major artery in my leg.  I was very fortunante to retain my right leg.  The vascular surgeon did wonders to restore blood flow to my leg.

BUT, one day I WILL run again!

HoopS

Glad you survived, buddy.  We were all worried about you.

Thanks, guys.  Just was browsing the board and ran accross this thead.  Thought it funny and ironic.  I am indeed a fortunate soul.  The Good Lord still has plans for me as I know how close I was to death and at LEAST dismemberment.  It may take a year or two for me to recover fully, but I will.

I will run again someday!

Just stay off the motorcycles............

I've worked with several over the years learning to walk again after a motorcycle accident.  They all got back on, but I wouldn't get near the things after seeing some of those injuries.

Take care of yourself. I am going to have to reconsider getting another bike.

Treadmill or open road for running?

As in getting the best work out.

Just keep on keeping on.  Don't lose the will.  As long as you keep the desire to walk and fully recover, there's hope.  Don't lose the fire of willpower.  As you said, the human body is an amazing thing.  The human mind is even more amazing.

Cold weather just takes a little getting used too. Buy the right clothes and its not that bad. That stupid Marathon that I plan on running is in March so I have to continue to run throughout the winter. Treadmills are not the same as road running. Plus it made me sick to my stomach when I tried to watch tv while i was on one of those contraptions.

yeah, i just hate the runny nose.  I ran a trail run about 2 weeks ago, and it was about 40 when we started off.

I love watching me some College Football Live when i run :)

I would probably get a good workout if I could watch YouTube highlights while I ran. Maybe some Dmac and Felix or AD. Reggie Bush highlights from his USC days are sick. That guy is the best athlete I've ever seen in college.
SideNote: Brandon Dean would have been one hell of a RB or WR. That guy was rollin on springs.

Took my first "steps" yesterday on a walker. At least I am on my way to recovery. Will have to use walker/crutches at least the next 6 weeks while my left tibia/fibula continue to heal. It's better than just a wheelchair for sure.

Have you seen an orthopedic dr?  You could really damage your thumb if you are not careful.  Another option, after x-rays to determine no fractures, is an occupational therapist.  Preferably a hand specialist.  I hope that the tendon is not torn.
