If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

HM "Howling Mad" Smith was a General in the Marine Corps.

Neither him nor MacArthur ever commanded a Battle Group.

Battle Group is a Pentomic Army term from the Eisenhower years as President.

There are no devices on a Silver Star, only subsequent awards of the same medal. Bronze Stars can be for valor or meritorious service and each award is indistinguishable from the other after the first award with a V for valor.

Haha I was thinking the same thing.  Been in service for that long and only mentioning the most recent accomplishments.  Should have been involved in the last 100 years of conflicts.  Humble much?  ;)

was never in harms way, and the only time I picked up a weapon was to qualify on the range.  So while I served please give your thanks to those who flew the missions and waded the rice paddies.

This really sums up my feelings perfectly... I was a veteran, I don't regret my time in the military one bit.  However, I feel Veterans Day is more for the people that served in combat and hostile areas than for me.  My father fought in the trenches during WWII, this day is for him.

My time in the military was more like a job.

The only thing I ever fired my weapon at was a paper target at the range while serving in the military.  I've been a deputy sheriff for the last 17 years, and I still have never pulled my side arm off my right hip and pointed it at anything but a paper target.  I've been really lucky

We are having a "Return to Tigerland" this month at Ft. Polk if you have time and want to see it again. PM me if interested. My planning cell is the one that is putting it together. Or you can probably get information on the next one, about the same time next year.

It includes tours of what used to be Tiger Village up a Peason Ridge.

Yeah. Kinda sucked going thru all that again, plus add the island to boot camp period and the suck factor pegged at epic. But I wouldn't trade my time on the island for anything. It made me who I am today. I needed it back then. I was a horrible private after they cancelled the Mohawk program in the Army. Seriously pissed and had a big attitude problem.

SDI SSgt Lawrence, DI SSgt Mitchum, DI SSgt Henderson (now MGySgt Henderson), and DI Sgt Borba all took a vested interest in my development and it was painful.

I don't need to read about oak leaf clusters Delta. I have 2 of them on MY Bronze Star (one of them for Valor) along with two other medals that I have (one for valor).

So, if you have a bronze star with a bronze oak leads cluster, that means you have been awarded it twice for two separate periods of time. If one of them is for valor, then you will wear the V and an oak leaf cluster. The ribbon or medal signifies one award, and the oak leaf signifies the other.

Nobody in the history of the military has been awarded a Medal with a cluster unless you got the same medal twice.

As for discharge papers saying who your Commanding General was, I've never seen it, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen 60 years ago. But I'm sure it referred to him as Holland M. Smith.

my dad...Vietnam in mid to late 60's.  shot in the chest(by friendly fire) and lived to tell about it with the bullet and a purple heart in a cedar chest at home. I am named after his best friend from Paragould who was killed in action there trying to save other Americans. All of you veterans we should thank each and every day for the world we live in and the air we breathe!!

For what it's worth I was in the air helping to put bombs on target and had a big old target on us while flying essentially a commercial jet around in a combat zone and I feel the same way.  My grandpa was in the 101st in WW2.

He told me he would have quit and found a way home if the people doing payroll quit sending him money and supply guys didn't send bullets.  Everybody plays a part and what you were doing was important.

Thanks to all that served.

To the couple who feel that their service was not what Veteran's Day represents, don't sell your service short.  Those that are in harm's way are damn sure dependent on those in the rear that ensure they have the items they need for their safety, comfort, survival, etc.  While one role might seem more glamorous or important by the nature of its accomplishment or task, others are vitally important.

Think of it this way, The little toe might seem insignificant to the entire leg for walking around, but try walking around very long with the little toe all messed up and sore.  There is a bible verse saying something similar.

In other words, be proud of your service and be thankful for this day that is just as much for you as any other veteran.

Thanks again for your service.
