Nice facepaint, but supporting Soccer is reprehensible.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

One day, perhaps a very long time from now, you'll understand.

I hold more hope that people will recognize it for the cultural poison that it is.

Do explain that statement, please.

I've discussed what all is wrong with soccer at fair length, repeatedly on the board-- usually in relation to the faux World Cup fever or major FIFA events, or Champions League major events.

A decent distillation of a good part of it can be found in Chuck Klosterman's book  'Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs-  A Low Culture Manifesto' ,  though he focuses more on Youth Soccer and why it resonates with certain age groups,  and is pressed relentlessly on the public.

In Eerie's defense, he lived in Ireland for a while so he does understand the game.

Don't try to convert him.  He's like those few Brazilians who are angry about how much $ the World Cup is costing them(the poor), and has some valid points.

I do believe that had he played at a high level, his perspective would be different - but his dislike is not for lack of understanding it.

Were said posts fairly recently?  If so, I'll take a look through your posts.
Given what I recall of your posting history, I am (sincerely) interested in your point(s).

Oh no.  They'd mostly be very, very old--  I think this may be my 3rd WC on Hogville;  I think I initially registered about a month before the 2006 Cup started in earnest.

The biggest benefit I have ever derived from soccer was the amount of cross-town traffic it cut down, on, when the National Team or a major event was on-- I could make a two hour trip in 30 minutes.

Well now, my curiosity is really piqued!

The thing that kills me, as a soccer-hater, is how silly some of the approaches to criticizing the game are;  there's plenty of Ugly-Americanism in it,  when it just isn't necessary.

As a Cultural Anthropology graduate and having grown up elsewhere, I get this.  Your arguments are much more valid and make me question at times the morality of soccer being such a "religion" around the world.  For example, the Brazilian construction workers who died building a stadium and Brazil's attitude toward them and their families - like, "they gave their lives for our "National Team's success and to be able to play at home".

Kind of reminds me of Texas A&M who I've been very critical of their bonfire that killed and maimed so many, and they want to honor them in the context of their football tradition, and continue that creepy tradition at all costs.

But life is full of these paradoxes and I don't blame Eerie.  I do blame 99% on this board, though, who try to argue that the sport's players aren't good athletes or the game is just boring, etc.

I enjoy the sport, but I'm a relative newb to it, having only been a fan since signing up for the EPL season package for 2003-04. I'm interested in the cultural poison aspect, even if only the cliff notes. I've not read that Chuck K book, but I enjoy his podcast appearances w/ BS.

But why is it true? (short version)

Short-short version-- it undermines all of the traditional American values,  is catered to Outcast Culture, celebrates non-assimilation,  and teaches approaches to life and sports that are collectivist in nature.

Are you suggesting that you have an issue with the obscene amounts of money the sport makes but then magically appears in briefcases bound for FIFA officials around the world?

Eh.  I don't care about FIFA corruption; there is corruption in any organization with enough money (*cough*  IOC *cough*)

Holy cow - now my interest is even higher!

I'll try to check out the Klosterman (sp?) book in full but in the meantime, if you can point to a thread where this was discussed previously I would appreciate it.

At an arms length, I would ask this question - couldn't you make your claims about all team sports?

I'll try and see if I can dig up any of the graveyard threads.   And no- absolutely nothing even remotely approaches soccer, in those regards.
