I think Dennis Johnson was a great RB.

But I dont think he was underrated.

Funny story on Thomas Brown. Texas tech came to town tied with us one year. Holtz had a 5 minute scrimmage 1 against 1 before the game in the Broles center. Blew Tech out in the 1st half. Brown was a third or 4th team early in his career but lost a shoe on a long TD run in mop up duty in that game. Still out ran everyone with one shoe and a sock.
Cedric Cobbs has my vote as one of the most under appreciated but also under achieved because of bulking up and a few other issues.

Michael Smith

this is my vote... dude sat behind all that power for so long and then shone when he got his chance...

M. Smith, good one. He's a latter day Roland Sales made the most out of it when it finally came!

I agree with the calls for clarification as to what we mean by "underrated".  For example, do we mean "forgotten", or "underappreciated at the time that they played" or both?

I don't think you could sayl guys like James Rouse or Cedric Cobbs or Madre Hill were underrated.  All of them came in with a great deal of hype and were the focus of attention while they were here, even though they may not now figure as prominently  in Razorback lore due to injury, failure to live up to the hype, or the bad luck of playing on bad teams.  The same is true of guys like Gary Anderson and Roland Sales, whose place is secured in Razorback lore despite the fact that, outside of the Orange Bowl, he was outshone both by guys older than him (Cowins and Eckwood) and guys younger than him (Anderson and Bowles).

I think underrated has to mean underappreciated and undervalued at the time that they played, and THEREFORE un-remembered as one of the greats.  This could be due to misuse, or due to the fact that they played second-fiddle on their own teams, or for some other reason.  Barry Foster comes to mind.  He was arguably the best back on Hatfield's last two teams, but because he was a fullback in the flexbone, he tended to be overshadowed by Rouse, E.D. Jackson, and was it Joe Johnson?  Jesse Clark falls into a similar category.  Peyton Hillis is another, just because his talents were hidden and his carries were few playing with McFadden and Felix.  Same with Michael Smith.  Another guy who comes to mind is Bobby Joe Edmonds.  He spent some time in the NFL as a rb, and he was a number one while he was here, but he was used all over the field at Arkansas and was probably better known as a return specialist.    I don't think I would put Dennis Johnson in this category.  He got his chance to show himself in Knile's absence for much of his career.

Madre Hill

I can only imagine what he could have done if he had never hurt his Knee same with Jerry Eckwood.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

Calling All Hogs

This is one of my favorite Dennis Johnson plays. It was against Florida. He lays out four Florida defenders and then the two that finally get him out of bounds hit the ground as he stays on his feet. This was his sophomore year.

Man that's some great footage of DJ detroyin' some Gators!

One more Madre high school story for you:
Malvern opened the '93 season against Benton, which was a step up in classification for Malvern. Being that the two towns are less than 20 miles apart, there was a lot of pre-game talk back and forth. Very early in the game, Madre busted loose and with a 10-yard lead the Panther players basically gave up. Madre ran the final 30 yards backwards, which failed to please Coach Alpe. He was benched the rest of the half. After the game, Madre went to the Benton locker room and apologized.

Lake Hamilton High School was loaded. Malvern suffered its only loss at Lake Hamilton. Very few will remember this, but LHHS was on the road the previous week and let the grass on their field grow to an estimated 6" before Malvern came in, admittedly to try to slow Madre down. Like I said, they had a very talented team and it was the only game I ever saw Madre really fail to "get off." LH won, 41-9.

But the Leopards, as fate would have it, got to play LHHS in the AAA state championship game, this time on what was then the artificial surface in War Memorial Stadium. Madre scored on two long runs and the Malvern Leopards were the 1993 Arkansas AAA State Champions.

Madre was not the jitterbug type. He generally just outran people. Didn't matter who they were. If they had 4.6 speed, Madre showed 'em what 4.55 looked like. But I think Deon Sanders would have had a hard time catching Madre from behind. That would indicate Madre had a lead. A football field just ain't long enough to make up ground on that kid when he had two good knees.

Sorry guys, I tend to get long-winded thinking back to those days of Malvern's "Madre Hill Show."

A healthy Jerry Eckwood would have won the Heisman.

He was my vote as well.

If Auburn is dirty so is Gus. You can't have it both ways. Deal with it.

If I remember right, that state championship game was cold and wet. It was not a fun day to be outside.

Must have been under a rock in the mid-90s. Don't remember Oscar Malone at all!

daryl bowles and Jessie Clark

Nice you mentioned Jessie. He's a classmate from my home town. He broke a couple of my tackle attempts in practice.

Am I the only person who is surprised that this thread has not derailed into a bunch of posts about Shabazz's high school exploits?

Had he went on to Arkansas, there'd be plenty to tell. But I'm fair to certain nobody would have called him under-rated!

The most exciting RB to watch in a Razorback uniform not named McFadden was Gary Anderson.

What could have been with Billy Warren if not for the blown out knee in the High School All star game.  If I'm I D-1 player, I would never play in a high school all star game.

How about Chrys "Chuckwagon" Chukwuma? He and Madre Hill were a great one-two punch in 1998!
