I'm sure the new SEC Commissioner is brilliant, but so far he's come across at media days like a cross between a lawyer and a Magic 8 Ball, but with less personality.

He's got some big shoes to fill.

I just read quotes from Twitter. All the reports I've read many seem to like him. Seems more new school.

Jury is still out, but he doesn't seem to me a kind of guy who can hold an audience.  A little boring and answers are more like a politician's than a sports guy.

Intercollegiate athletics are being run more and more by CEOs, lawyers, and politicians and less by sports guys. That's the way of the world now.

Yep, management is less and less in the hands of former HC's.

Was Mike Slive really that engaging?  I remember a sports anchor who posts on here often referring to him as Sleepy Slive.  I personally thought Slive favored Droopy.

He doesn't have to be a showman.  His job is not to personally sell the SEC to the masses like a coach has to do to rally fans or an AD to sell season tickets.  He has an entire television network staffed with professionals and Paul Finebaum to do that.  His job of maximizing cash inflow to the conference is done more behind a desk, on a phone and in meeting rooms than it is behind a podium answering questions for the yayhoo SEC media.

Little known fact, but prior to settling on Guantanamo, the Pentagon wanted to house terror suspects at War Memorial Stadium.  It was deemed to be cruel and unusual punishment and in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Ok, which commish is media savvy? They all seem about the same to me. He said he purposely kept it low-key in his first address. That there would be time for trading barbs with the other conferences and such......

He's definitely more self deprecating than Slive, but it's what he'll do behind the scenes that counts...we'll see

People weren't sold on Slive early because they didn't think anyone could fill Roy Kramer's shoes.  So let's give this new guy a little time.  I think Slive turned out okay.

I've never been sold on Mike Slive. IMHO he played favorites too much and gave the officials too much latitude.

I'll wait until the first major issue he has to face to judge how I feel about him.  Right now his job is just not to mess anything up.

That was my point, Slive turned out great, built on what Roy Kramer started and look at the $'s flowing into SEC member institutions today

True, plus he was a Yankee.  (Sankey is also from up north).

I don't know, I expected the younger guy to be more dynamic.  Instead, he seems rather dull.

He was the commissioner of the Southland Conference for several years, so I'm optimistic.  The interviews just seem underwhelming though.  That Bob Dylan stuff isn't nearly as clever as he seemed to think it was.

He grew the conference income but you're right he should have stepped up and improved the sorry officiating, especially when it was so repeated and so blatant.

I wasn't blown away by Sankey's opening remarks yesterday... but I didn't really expect to be.

But, it did seem like he handled "certain" topics well, during the Q&A... the "flag", conduct of players (which is definitely about FSU), cost of attendance.

When Sankey appeared on Finebaum later, he seemed more personable.

I don't really care how he handles Pressers. He's a Suit. He's not our Coach, so I'm not looking for him to "win me over."

What I care about is decisions for things like:
- upcoming input/decisions on yearly scheduling, who plays whom and where.
- WHETHER SEC GOES TO 9 CONFERENCE GAMES
- SEC expansion to 16 teams. We're a few years away, but I still see it coming
- Additional work on growing the SEC Network brand, to help get the UofA (and all schools) all the money it can
- Input/Decisions on the Officiating Crews (across all sports). Especially, when they royally screw up (which is inevitable)

Until I start seeing those types of input/decisions from Sankey, I'll reserve judgement.

I listened to him with bazzel this morning and thought he was interesting. Setting can mean a lot when trying to gauge someone personality from 1 meeting

I would hope for two things in him-a savvy negotiator and good vision.  I don't care what impression he makes in interviews.

He's new. Maybe he's trying to gauge everyone. Or trying to earn their respect before he opens up. That speak softly big stick attitude.

The Ole Bard said "All that glitters is not gold." So.................why not show some patience and see what he does and what he doesn't do before we pass judgement? He might be dull and bland on the outside but who knows, there might just be gold on the inside and then again maybe not. I have to say for myself I made this mistake with Jeff Long, I was to quick to pass judgement and I am winding up with egg all over face. Sometimes I should take my own advice. ;)

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

We're rowing the same boat.

The guy's job is to run the nuts and bolts of the system, not sell the system.  I don't need rah rah from the commish.  I need him to fix officiating, keep the playing field level on a conference to conference basis, I need him to negotiate for money and bowl ties.  All of that stuff happens in a board room and on conference calls not in front of the media.

Agree. I did the same with Jeff also. I have enough egg on my face to fill up a chicken house. I knew better. Won't make the same mistake again.

I agree , give him a chance ! I never liked Slive...I felt he had a bunch of cheating refs that always favored the original Sec teams. When obvious shams went down on the field he didn't take them to the wood shed enough.

Wouldn't worry to much about the egg on face stuff, I believe Jeffy boy had/has a little egg on his face too.  But giving a man his due- Beilema and Anderson good hire on his part also.

I judge bosses by three things: do they make money (are they a winner) do they make the tough decisions when necessary and how do they treat people. None of those are always the top quality all the time. It depends on the situation as to which is most important at the time.

I wasn't impressed with how he handled the issues with the CBB tape at Alabama.  I get that he had to release his first statement.  But the SEC needed to say something about the taping on the sidelines and take the lead on making sure it doesn't happen again.  His silence was bull crap if you ask me.
