FWIW,I have been told, by the dad of a QB, that has thrown to Ford in camps, that he's the real deal. Another scout friend said that Ford has the all the tools to be the best TE in the history of the Hogs.

He needs to spend the summer working on his 25 yd laterals if he wants to achieve that title

Luke is the real deal. Can do 225 pound bench press 20+ times.  He's still in high school!    Lsu and Ohio st are both all over him, but he's FIRMLY committed to Arkansas.

Wow. Gotta gives the coaches a lot of credit for finding this kid early and closing the deal. Can't wait to see him on the field for the hogs, will be a beast.

Does anyone have any insight as to what happened with this guy?

He said he felt he made a quick decision and needed to look further, yet it seems he jumped on board pretty quickly at Alabama.  While he should do what is right for him, it does not seem he was fully honest with us.

hoghiker

I love the Hogs. I have since I sat on my fathers lap and watched The Hogs and Horns go head to head. The Ford switch encapsulates the Hogs recruiting situation. For most top end recruits, especially from out of state which is where it matters, we simply don't have the pop culture athletic allure to land them. I watch every game (okay 90%) but honestly a national championship for my beloved  Hogs never enters my head. Lighting could strike but I'm not standing out in my pasture waiting for it to happen. Class of 82. I bleed hog.

Him and his father spoke about how alabama didn't use thier TE'S and how they "were gonna start using them more". They pretty much said he was a liar and atleast bret had proof they used thiers.

Sounds like they were the liars in the end.

I can only say that it opens up another scholarship for a great defensive prospect etc...  It is not like there is a critical shortage of tight ends.

Heard he and his family were visiting Georgia last week and CBB found out and was not happy.

It sucks when we're occasionally "placeholder" U for guys that accept an offer as a fallback until they get the one they really want. Once that happens it seems they can't de-commit fast enough.

Enjoy not being used while we might have our third Mackey winner in the next 2-3 years.

CBB is right up front about the visiting and committing thing.

This was going to be tough because his recruiting blew up this summer and he had too many elite programs pressuring him to not have him at least want to look.

I agree with Bret on this.

If you want to play the recruiting game, take some visits and see some sights...fine. But don't tell me you're committing BEFORE you get on that merry go round.

Cause if you commit to me, i think i have that position filled and alter what I'm doing...when i really don't have that position filled.

Secondarily, dont give your word if you're not willing to keep it. Lots of people break their word.

Only a few are willing to keep it.

Read this AM that Bama is now favored to land him. They had him quoting "It will be hard to say no to Bama". They were giving him the "Gronk" comparison.

I can see if he wants to win a NC then Bama or another top 10 program would be better.  But to get to the NFL we are a great fit for a TE.

tophawg19

slow the roll guys . he has said he still might be a hog. let's not trash him. let him see the season play out . given a chance to watch the Bama offense , he may decide to be a hog if we have a spot left

I don't see Luke committing to anyone soon again.  I don't think the bridge is burnt like most people think..  If Patton has a big year at the TE position then I can see Luke coming back on board.  He still has a good relationship with some of the players..  We have to make progress as a team this year and win more games.

He went from owning the TE slot in this class to now having to compete with others. It appears we are on a TE from LA who looks the part and has interest in UA.

I am not hating on Ford - I get the seduction of the attention - and we do not know what was really said behind the scenes.

He'll be committing to Bama soon. He visited there this past weekend and name them his leader. Also picked up 12 crystal balls to Bama.

Agreed. It hurts. Gotta win more to keep up with the BAMAs of the world in recruiting, but need these kind of kids to keep up with the BAMAs of the world, Catch 22.

You are hit twice too, since you lose him from your roster, and then he is added to your rivals roster. Versus losing him to an Ohio State or someone out of conference.

Can't blame him for feeling that way.  What 18 year old wouldn't be overwhelmingly flattered to have the best team in the nation knocking at your door?  That being said, I think he'll see through the "Gronk" sales pitch after the emotions wear off.  He'll go out, enjoy the recruiting experience, and be a Hog in the end.  You can book it.*

He'll have up until we get another TE commit to change his mind. We're taking just one, and may shift that to another position should we get a 2019 commit.  ;)

tophawg19

we have several options so it may be his loss . finding good TE's hasn't been an issue . Bama lost their 4 star so the came after ours . but there are others out there

I would love to have Luke Ford. I always got the impression though that if he visited somewhere else we would lose him. He almost committed to Illinois after his visit there, and then committed to us the next week or so. He gets high on his visits so I would think whoever he visits last will have the best shot to sign him. Maybe, hopefully that's us. Not likely though. He ship has probably already sailed

rljjr

TE is not a position where we don't have success. If it's not Ford it will be somebody else. He would have been an All America TE here and developed into a great pro, but if the glitz of "Bama" is what he wants then he can do his thing there and maybe win a ring or two, but he won't get the type of use and development in a pro-style offense there as he would with us. He made his choices, we'll make ours. It's business. No big whoop.

tophawg19

Bama has a new O/C so no telling what changes he will make . He knew how to sell ford by using Gronk as an example

I'd always be Skeptical of a coach that says he's willing to change his offense to suit my skill set.  A player is better off choosing a program that already has that in place instead of hoping a coach will keep his promise and change his offense for you.

"My God, Alabama is definitely at the top because the visit was amazing and you can tell that they don't do what they did for me for just anyone," Ford told SEC Country. "I got to chill with the coaches in their offices. I worked out for them and got to talk to Nick Saban for a while."

I don't have a source, so I'm like the rest of the 21,025 Hogvillians on Hogville.  But I do have a good idea how kids think, I once was one and I have a good idea how CBB recruits by now.  We, as in our Coaches, don't have to worry much about the TE position, we will have a great recruit fill the void that Ford left open and I think if he does try to come back to see if his spot is still open Bielema will tell him it's to late it's already been filled.  That's just my take on it.

I don't get how Bama can use Gronk or any NFL TE as a reason to come to Bama. When the 2016 NFL season started there were 35 Bama players on 53 man rosters and not a one was a tight end

He did not start coaching him until 2014. Gronk had already been first team NFL and All Pro twice by then. He didn't have crap to do with making him who he is. Really weak Bama. Really weak !

Luke Ford isn't going to make or break us, we will have good tight ends, we didn't win a championship with Hunter Henry and it is very doubtful he will be as good as Hunter.  we need linemen, linebackers and dbacks to get us to the next level.  he doesn't play any of those positions and until we start getting more , we get some but need more, SEC quality kids at those positions Luke Ford is not anything to get upset over....

Well if he's truly fired up by the "Gronk" comparison I can truly understand why. Not every day that a young man could have a guy who just ran up a $102k bar tab in just one night be presented as a role model. I mean with everyone saying that 'Bama is the "Bugatti" of college football one could most certainly use the 160 bottles of champagne, including 15 bottles of Dom Perigion (sp) for a price of $27k, along with the 15 Gray Goose Vodka magnums with a price tag of $10,400, 45 bottles of Maker's Market for $540 AND 24 shots of Jim Beam Fire whiskey for $264 as a prime motivating factor to sway the young man. "Gronk's" and gang's drinking feat is truly legendary and marks a new "high" water mark that every young man should aspire to emulate.

I just hope that if Luke ultimately decides to go with the Tide 'cause he wants to follow in the footsteps of the current Patriot TE he can live up to the standards set for him and all others to follow. Yep, "uncommon" indeed.
