right where we want to be
It does seem like the lower they rank us in pre-season the better we do. We have a lot to prove and it will be fun watching us climb the polls.

PigWig

Comparing the polls to the schedule:

We avoid #2 Florida and #4 South Carolina.
We get #3 LSU, #6 Vandy, and #24 Ole Miss at Baum stadium.
We travel to #20 Texas A&M.
We play #15 Arizona and #22 Okie St in the Frisco tournament.

*Based on Coaches Poll

To not be ranked is getting dissed..  Arkansas has the 2nd best overall record in the SEC.

The reason is who have we really beat???  LaTech on the road but they just got swept...we need to just keep winning on the weekends and take care of our midweek games

Correct, we'll have plenty of chances to earn a ranking, lots of baseball left.

SPAL

Yes, our non con sis is horrible. Bryant is now 250+. La tech was swept. Alcorn state is 250+.

With that said, I think we are a top 25 baseball team but we will see how we stack up against Mizzou. They have a really good starter....Top 10 draft potential type good.

We take 2 from Mizzou....We will be ranked.

Players can't look ahead, but the fans can.  I think we should have a good chance to beat NO, Grambling, and Grand Canyon (X2), and Alabama will be a very winnable road series. IF we take 2 from Mizzou, we could be looking at a record somewhere around 25-6 (7-2) when LSU rolls into town.  That would be an incredible start to the season.

Same could be said for other SEC teams.  Who has South Carolina beat?  They lost to Kansas State and lost a 3 game series to Clemson.  They are 1-3 against decent teams, yet SC is ranked 8th.

LSU lost to TCU and Texas Tech in a tourney, managing to beat only Baylor.  LSU also lost to New Orleans.  LSU (at home) beat Maryland 3-0 in a 3 game series for their only semi-credible wins, but who doesn't beat Maryland?  Though the LSU record is less than mediocre, they remain ranked 4th.

Florida is 13-8 and got swept by Auburn.  Enough said, but they are ranked 12th.  Really?

Auburn has played absolutely no one in non-conference, yet after beating an over rated Florida team in their series 3-0, the Tigers vault into the top 25.  And just how does Florida remain ranked ahead of Auburn after being swept out the door?

And 14th ranked Ole Miss?  What a laugher.  They lost to Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU, going 0-3 in the Shriners.  They also lost to Memphis.  They take 2 of 3 at home from an unranked Vandy and that qualifies them for a number 14 ranking?

These pollsters are biased, uninformed, and FOS IMO.

TikiHog

First off most all these teams were ranked to start and we were no where to be seen....so beating nobody and having a SOS of 161 isn't going to get us ranked....

Lets look at some of these teams you've mentioned
SC has a SOS of number 1 in the nation
Ole Miss has the 2nd ranked SOS
LSU is 32 ranked
Florida 38
Auburn is 69

Hogs 161   huge difference

lets look at combined records of teams played

SC 224-98
Ole Miss 246-125
LSU 219-144
Florida 234-140
Auburn 225-170

HOGS 167-184   once again HUGE difference

we cant complain for not being ranked we just need to keep winning

That is another thing..  Look at SC's schedule and just how does the teams they have played equate to the strongest schedule in the nation?
SOS and winning are two different things.  LSU hasn't beaten anyone that would give them a #32. They are propped up by being beaten by teams that derived their rating from beating them.  We have played just as tough a schedule as LSU, or at least close, but we have a 161 with Arizona, Ok St, and Miss State played?  It doesn't add up.

Are they ranking teams based on SOS rather than wins and losses these days?  I could grasp it if all you played were major D1 teams and you went 12-9 against those, but that isn't the case.

And I'm not actually complaining.  I prefer the underdog role as a motivational factor.  Just making comparisons.

TikiHog

one key on the SOS is we've played 13 games vs teams with losing record and are 12-1...LSU has played 7 and are 7-0

as far as SC they've played 12 games (9-3) vs top 50 and 14 vs top 100 (10-4) thats how you get a SOS of 1..plus their 4-0 vs top 50 on the road

Hogs have played 4 and gone 1-3 vs top 50 and 8 and gond 5-3 vs top 100

ThisTeetsTaken

With 298 D1 baseball teams  I don't see how anybody comes up with a top 25 anyway.

WEEK 6 POLLS:  (March 27, 2017)  After a series victory on the road against what had been a hot Missouri team, the Razorbacks are ranked in most polls this week.

D1 Baseball:  The Hogs are 20th.  They were unranked in this poll last week.    http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/baseball/d1/d1baseballcom-top-25

NCBWA: The Hogs are 20th (28th last week).   http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/baseball/d1/ncbwa

USA Today Coaches poll: Hogs are 20th (27th last week).      http://sportspolls.usatoday.com/ncaa/baseball/polls/coaches-poll/2017/5/

Perfect Game:  Hogs are 20th (24th last week).   https://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=13677

http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/college-baseball-rankings-top-25-march-27/#sQ5Ql1O2buwvOGOV.97

Collegiate Baseball:  Hogs are 17th  (29th last week).    http://baseballnews.com/collegiate-baseball-div-1-poll-3-27-17/

College Baseball Central:  Hogs are still unranked (but 1 of 7 teams in the Others Considered category).
https://collegebaseballcentral.com/college-baseball-central-top-3272017/15285/

Warren Nolan:   RPI #28,  SoS #78, 6-4 vs. Top 50  (Last Monday: RPI #52, SoS #149, 1-3 vs. Top 50)      http://warrennolan.com/baseball/2017/schedule/Arkansas

Boyd's World:  RPI #29 (Last Monday: RPI #54)      http://www.boydsworld.com/baseball/rpi/currentrpi.html

LSU at 6th in D1 poll is laughable.  23 rpi and only 2-5 vs top 50.  Two non con losses to New Orleans and coming off a series loss where it took an 8th inn rally to avoid being swept.  Moved them down 1 spot.  Must be nice to get that kind of treatment.  Thy may be an incredible team, but that's not a resume of the 6th ranked team in my opinion.

That is the kind of crap that leads to them getting a national seed or the chance for a super regional every year.
Quote from: 1990sHogBallChild on March 04, 2023, 04:08:32 pmWe have peaked... lucked his way to two elite 8s by getting the most favorable draws in tourney history. Beat the most over-rated 1 seed in the history of college basketball in Gonzaga who would be a 6 seed if they played in a real conference. Then Muss's other 5 tourney wins are against an average of a 12 seed. A few dozen coaches could have done that. Two losing records in SEC play is as much as MA had in 8 years.

south Carolina, lsu, ole miss, vandy, florida get great treatment from the rpi & polls.
they will host every year, as long as they don't tank

remember we won the west 18-12, swept south Carolina at their place, guess who hosted & who didn't

Four of those I understand for one reason or another - one I do not. Why Ole Miss gets preferential treatment I have yet to figure out...and with the addition of A&M, who also get white glove treatment, it has become a scenario where the Hogs really have to tear it up, and a couple really have to tank during the year to have a shot at a host spot.

I would say probably one of the ones in the middle, closer to the overall average of all the polls - Collegiate Baseball is probably a good one to go off of based on the fact that they have LSU (#23) behind us.  All of the other polls (Besides Perfect Game) have LSU ranked ahead of us in the #10-15 range which is ridiculous IMO.

Collegiate Baseball seems to do the best job at ranking teams based on what they have done this year, and not about what they have done in the last decade...

While they did promote Bama a lot, they were very informative and supportive of the hogs.  One of them went on and on about Biggers.
how many times did they go on about Biggers?

I think D1baseball and baseball america have historically been the most in the know with the college game.

In MLB, the preseason predictions are a better indicator of how the year will finish than the results after the first month.  The problem with college baseball is the first month is even less games and a quarter of the season.  So some publications can be too slow or too quick to buy into a good run by a team.
