Our initial hot board for Ole Miss' coaching search.

QuoteAs Ole Miss begins its first basketball coaching search since Andy Kennedy was hired in 2006, the job has changed.

The Pavilion gives Ole Miss one of the better arenas in the SEC to recruit to, and the Tuohy Center is a top-notch practice facility. The SEC Network provides exposure, and the league has improved significantly during Kennedy's 12-year tenure.

Still, there are challenges to the Ole Miss job, and without any sort of defined coaching tree, athletic director Ross Bjork could look in a multitude of directions for the Rebels' next head coach.

These are realistic candidates, and this list will be updated throughout the coaching search to reflect the most relevant and recent information available.

Kermit Davis, Middle Tennessee

Will be interesting to see if during off-season Ole Miss will ask Florida permission to speak with Mike White, an Ole Miss alum.

Report: Kermit Davis interested in Ole Miss job, would accept offer

QuoteDavis, who has been the coach of the Blue Raiders since 2002, has turned the program into a mid-major power, making the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons and will likely be dancing in March this year as well. The Blue Raiders sit at 17-5 (9-1 Conference USA) on the season. Davis' team served up one of the most memorable moments of the 2016 NCAA Tournament when, as a No. 15 seed, they upset No. 2 seed Michigan State in the first round. During his time at Middle Tennessee, Davis has an overall record of 332-187 and has led the Blue Raiders to the NCAA Tournament three different times.

Davis has roots in the state, growing up with his father serving as the basketball coach at Mississippi State. He would later go on to play guard for the Bulldogs from 1980-82 and would join the staff as a graduate assistant in 1983, his first job in coaching.

I was driving through Mississippi today and caught part of a sports radio show when they were discussing the Ole Miss job.  The reporter they were talking to listed Kermit Davis, Rick Stansbury, and Buzz Williams as possibilities.

Former Ohio State coach Thad Matta is reportedly in Oxford today and Ole Miss Twitter is pumped

QuoteThad Matta is on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford today.

Matta last coached at Ohio State, where he spent 13 seasons. He led the Buckeyes to a total of nine Big Ten Championships and two Final Four appearances as well as helping to develop a number of lottery and first-round picks in the NBA draft.

Matta and Ohio State parted ways last summer, with Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith concerned about his level of recruiting and Matta concerned about his health.

I might be wrong, but even with that great new arena, I don't think Ole Miss hoops will consistently recruit at an elite level. I'd go get a blue-collar, chip-on-the-shoulder guy who will recruit players like him and play with an edge. Not hard to find guys like that. JMO.
