"Forming a "wedge" on a kickoff return is no longer legal. If three or more players line up shoulder-to-shoulder within two yards of each other, it will be a penalty."

If you don't think that's nuts, then how bout this other new rule:

"A defensive player on the ground may no longer lunge or dive at the quarterback's lower legs."

That's the dumbest crap i have ever heard. I hate that they want to protect the QB so much. He is on the field playing FOOTBALL!! You are going to get hit and hurt. Get over it.

How do you know if you're done whiping?  Sniff the TP?

Its all about feel. It took years of training. Very rarely have I had to go back in for mop-up duty.

The wedge rule is stupid but i like the lunging rule.  You could end a career with a shot like that.

I agree with the aim of the rule, but I just don't think it's practical.

What if it's a close game coming down to the wire, and you're a defensive lineman/linebacker trying to do everything you can to try to stop the other team from scoring. After falling to the ground because you were chop-blocked by a runningback, you have a shot to lunge at the QB to try to sack him or mess up his throw. Do you just lay there and let him throw the ball b/c you can't lunge at him from the ground? Do you take a couple seconds to stand all the way back up before you attempt to get him? I just don't think it's fair that defensive players can get chop-blocked all day, but once they are on the ground, they can pretty much do nothing to stop the QB.

I would imagine that this is a response to Tom Brady's injury.

If the QB had been Jon Kitna or Kyle Orton, this might not have been a rule change.

Actually, it's in response to a number of injuries; it's arguable that the major knee injury to Carson Palmer a few years ago could have been flagged under this system.

As for the Wedge Rule, this is a vast improvement; it's actually a situation where the Players Association is sticking up for the little guys in their union, rather than the superstars;  the guys who earn the league minimum to wreck their bodies completely in a 4 year or shorter career  really needed this change--  last year, almost half the reported head injuries in the league came from the wedge and wedge bust.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Good point on Palmer - wasn't von Olhoeffhen (sp?) that rolled into him?

Kimo von Oelhoffen,  yes.

And I want my triple word score for spelling that stuff correctly.
