N.Y. Times: Long After Protests, Students Shun the University of Missouri

Freshman enrollment at the Columbia campus, the system's flagship, has fallen by more than 35 percent in the two years since.

Even in-state students for whom Mizzou is a family tradition are choosing to go elsewhere, including public universities in neighboring states, like Illinois and Arkansas, which offer preferential tuition or scholarships to Missouri students.

Despite having spoken both with myself and the president of the Mizzou student lobbying group, the Associated Students of the University of Missouri, Hartocollis included nothing from either interview in her final story. It is reasonable to assume that the exclusion of these interviews — and who knows how many others — seems to have been driven by the fact that they did not fit into the more simplistic, yet flawed picture that she wished to paint. In her portrayal, the protests have caused an entirely negative impact on our university, and are the sole driver of down enrollment. However, this simply is not true.

The reality of Mizzou's current state of affairs is far more complex...

New York Times was correct, however, in pointing out that the events which took place on campus in the fall of 2015 appeared far more dramatic off campus than on. This can be statically shown through the fact that the enrollment drop has come from new students, rather than students transferring away.

The Daily Caller Education Reports: Enrollment at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) has continued plummeting, with the 25 percent decline reported in 2016 increasing to a 35 percent decline

Mizzou experienced a 25 percent decline in freshman enrollment and suffered a $32 million hit to its budget in spring 2016.

Mizzou has eliminated more than 400 positions and closed seven dorms on campus.

"The general consensus was that it was because of the aftermath of what happened in November 2015," Mun Choi, Mizzou's president, told The New York Times. "There were students from both in state and out of state that just did not apply, or those who did apply but decided not to attend.

Meanwhile, Aly Zuhler, a Jewish student whose mother and cousins had attended the school, decided not to apply after a swastika made from feces appeared on a dorm bathroom wall...
