Something that bothers me about our press conferences

A little nit picky, but why do we have a mic stand and not mics in the podium? Watch pressers at other schools and they are a little more professional. Also, basketball pressers take place on a white folding table with no cover. All this looks a little bush league. Rant over.

I would be happy if I could just hear the question being asked.

If nothing else, someone should caption the question at the bottom of the video.

If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

So basically all my complaining was for nothing and I'm a dumbass.  I should have just watch the presser BEFORE commenting.

As to why the PC's are bad, they designed a football center without a dedicated media room. You would have thought someone would have noticed that, but they use a hall, or regular room as a makeshift media room if I've read it correctly.

Yes, not being able to hear the questions is annoying, but the mic stand and white folding table are terrible as well.

This... Why not put drop mics in the audience and have someone actually mix the conference after the fact so it can at least be followed without turning up your volume to max to hear the questions and then back down to hear the answers...

How true. This has been a persistent issue for as far back as I can remember. Can't tell you how many times a coach or someone else has made some comment or statement in response to a question that was asked but one couldn't hear.

Mike Irwin

They use college students to set up the mics and control the audio. It's hit and miss. Believe me we have more issues with the way they do things than that you guys do. Way too often the audio is completely screwed up which is why we show up early to test it.  Usually by the time the pressers start it's been fixed but it's a fight at times. One of the kids ended up admitting one day that they are told to blame it on our camera settings when the audio is bad.

Mike Irwin

At times they've passed mics around for the media when they ask questions. The problem with that is somebody has to turn the audio up and down before and after the question or the answers sounds hollow. It can be done but again it would take somebody that knows what they're doing and most of those college kids they use are only minimally trained.

Tortfeasor

Why can't these issues be fixed? It's not a great appearance.

They've had this issues for years/decades. Not having a dedicated media room is a missed opportunity. Not having an audio engineer on staff to handle this situation and leaving it up the av Students is another bad move... +1 to the person who called for drop down mikes and an audio engineer. The tools and properly trained people need to be in place to make it work. I always disagreed strongly with those in the Administration whose idea it was to use students instead of professional crew on things like this and it always made us look like amateurs. Hire a Professional and mentor the AV students. That works.

If the purpose of the press conference is just to answer reporters' questions that is understandable.  If part of the purpose is to broadcast/stream the conference for public consumption, it makes no sense for the reporter's questions to be inaudible. Seems like an easy fix from a production standpoint if production is important.

That's what I'm telling you. You have to be quick at it. As soon as the question stops that mic should be killed. Instead, quite often the mic was not killed for two or three seconds so the first few words of a player or coach's response sounded funky.

Running an audio board with more than one "open" mic has it's moments and you need someone that knows how to run the board like Mike says above or the feedback screech would
really be painful to the ears. But... Good news, tonight's post practice pc had an open mic for the press so you can hear the questions. Maybe they just ran both mics to the pool camera and called it a day. Regardless, please enjoy this link with the post practice pc with questions.

All they need is one dedicated mike for all questions, and media members asking the questions would have to step up to the mike to ask them.  This isn't rocket science.

I have watched two of Morris' pressers so far, and couldn't hear one single question being asked.  This is very unprofessional.

There is no money to hire an audio engineer for $35,000. All of the salary money is being used up by the crowd of senior associate and associate athletic directors who make around $150k-$300k/year.

I completely understand and you're right. I also should have phrased it differently in terms of work description like an A/V Specialist but the title doesn't matter when there is not the budget nor the thought process to remedy the situation on a permanent and professional basis. Thanks for your input.
