I *believe* he was the first to confirm Morris.

Honestly, though, I think Chavis is past his prime, and not at all convinced he could do well here.  I just hope we don't break the bank on him.

Keep in mind that Chavis had a team full of loafs at A&M. Hard to work with guys that only want to play hard every now and then. I think he is long in the tooth but I still think he has some merit.

I agree. He was great when all the offenses were pro-style and Tennessee was controlling the ball on offense. I'm not so sure he's capable of fielding a defense capable of stopping the current offenses. He certainly isn't the best DC in America.

Notice he says your boy instead of "our coach". Very telling.

I'm not worried. If he recruits like he did here Louisville will fire him in about 5 years.

Never thought I'd see the day Arkansas fans would be upset about John Chavis as DC. Have you seen our last half dozen DC's?? This fanbase really is insane.

Texans from Texas high school spread football.  Chavis looked great coaching under Fulmer when the Vols were at their peak.  Looked good with LSU and their recruiting classes and physical style of football.  Gets to A&M with pillow fight Sumlin and Texas recruits and not so good.

Amen. A lifetime of experience coaching in the SEC. Maybe a little old, but that's likely needed to balance out a relatively young rest of the staff.

I'm not down on this hire because I think he would be a good hire for us X's O's wise and the weather of experience he will bring. But like you said he hates recruiting. The only way I see this working is if the remaining defensive staff or at least two of them have to be recruiting specialist. I can see that working.

Arkansas isn't going to be a place where we can have a top defense in ypg but by being an opportunistic defense capitalizing off turnovers and have a efficient defensive red zone percentage. Chavis is the type of coach I can see doing well in these areas.

No kidding.  The problem is we are just as delusional as TN or any other base, and when we don't land the person that has 172 posts about him, then everyone goes nuts.  He is definitely an upgrade.

maybe we should get SMU's DC?

CM has never coached in the SEC, he seems like he brings a lot of energy, but he needs someone on the staff that has experience in this league.  Chavis fits the bill.

Well, my take on that would be that he could probably "reel" in some "dogs" that could go the "cruitin" for us as defensive coaches. I figure he still knows what to do, I guess we'll find out if he's the one.

Wildhog

I mean, it's obviously a big name, and you'd hope the name alone will bring some recruiting momentum.  But he doesn't like to recruit, and when's the last time he had to field a defense without elite talent?

Not upset.  Just not excited.  Our last half dozen or more DC's have all had a bad job: DC at Arkansas.  Chavis has had great DC jobs.  Well till A&M and it should still be much better than Arkansas.  Not much of a worse job in the SEC than DC at Arkansas.  This would be unlike any situation Chavis has been in.  No 4 and 5 star recruits on each level of the D and not too many NFL difference makers at Arkansas on D.  Now throw in a spread coach who is focusing on recruiting from Texas.  Chavis must be desperate or not ready to retire.

By NCAA rule, One coach has to stay on campus and cannot go on the road recruiting. My guess is if Chavis is hired, he'd be the "On campus" coach that handles the visiting recruits.

That being said, I still don't think Chavis is the guy but I could be wrong.
