UGA RB commit calls reports about fake Notre Dame visit 'misunderstanding'

Stanley Williams, who has been committed to UGA for two years, apologized on Monday for misleading reporters that he made an unofficial visit to Notre Dame this weekend.

"I felt a lot of pressure to say I had went on the visit," Williams said...

Deangelo Yancey will no longer be a part of Kentucky's 2013 recruiting class.  The wide receiver from Atlanta has reopened his recruitment just a few days after telling Rivals.com he's still committed to UK.

"Smoke" Mizzell was arrested for underage possession of alcohol early Sunday morning. "Smoke" who was on his official recruiting visit to UVA, was seen attempting to kick a passing car on 14th Street near the UVA campus.

QuoteMizzell is widely-considered to be the jewel of Virginia's 2013 recruiting class. He's rated a five-star running back by Rivals.com, and is Virginia's first five-star recruit since Monroe. Virginia coach Mike London cannot comment on incoming recruits until they sign letters-of-intent.

Reported tonight that Ezekiel Elliot 4 star RB out of STL will be taking an official visit to Mizzou.  He's still committed to Ohio State, but said he has genuine interest in Mizzou.  Both his parents went to Mizzou, father played football, mother on track team.
"We wish the B12 the best, and all that"

The Gators are still in contention for South Plantation running back Alex Collins, who was leaning toward Florida immediately following his official visit on Dec. 14. However, he visited Miami last weekend and heads to Arkansas this Friday for an official. Those two schools have been gaining steam this month and are now the favorites for Collins. UF will be in the picture until the end, but he appears to be an unlikely addition for the Gators.

Vanderbilt builds football recruiting pipeline to Memphis
Franklin focuses on talent-rich town

Vanderbilt football coaches haven't exactly claimed Memphis as a recruiting hub through the years.

For that matter, few Memphis high school players have bothered to consider Vanderbilt an option.

All of that appears to be changing as coach James Franklin prepares to sign his third recruiting class.

On Feb. 6, four players from Memphis plan to sign with the Commodores. Vanderbilt has no in-state commitments in the 2013 class from outside the Memphis area.

"Vanderbilt's presence has grown tremendously," said Whitehaven football coach Rodney Saulsberry...

It's down to Tennessee, Auburn and Clemson for Milton High School defensive end Carl Lawson, who is ranked as the nation's No. 2 overall prospect by ESPN.

QuoteUnlike most, well virtually all elite prospects, Lawson has no plans to announce his decision on TV, or sit in front of a table of hats. At least that's the plan right now, according to his father.

"He's just going to call the school, and it will be done," Lawson said. "There's no press conference or anything like that."

Some recruiting analysts, including 247sports.com's Gerry Hamilton, are projecting Lawson to sign with Tennessee.

In the new age of Social Media, top college prospects are finding it far more difficult to take "secret" official visits.

Word spread quickly on Twitter that Central Gwinnett LB Trey Johnson (committed to Ohio State) and Alpharetta QB Joshua Dobbs (committed to Arizona State) were in Knoxville.

Johnson's appearance nearly caused a meltdown at Ohio State after a website that covers the Buckeyes tweeted last Friday, "Buckeyes LB commit Trey Johnson told me rumor he was taking an official visit to Tennessee this weekend isn't true."

Marc Givler of Ohio State's Rivals.com website, also tweeted on Friday, "Trey Johnson will not be anywhere in the state of Tennessee this weekend. I also won't be in Tennessee, or Delaware, or Colorado, FYI."

Of course, we know how this story turned out: Johnson was at Tennessee...

Johnson's coach, Todd Wofford:  "Trey just wanted to take a trip. He's an 18-year-old kid that thought this was an opportunity he wouldn't get again. He just wanted to take a trip up there, and that's what he did.

"Trey wanted to keep it low key, so nobody thought it was more than it was. Then it started coming out that he was trying to hide this and hide that. It made it seem like it was a bigger deal than it was. But it wasn't.

"This is the craziest stuff I've dealt with in 18 years of coaching. But if Trey wasn't a big-time player, it would never happen."

In defense of Johnson, he's just a kid who is one of the nation's top linebackers and has ton of celebrity coaches making sales pitches to him, despite the commitment. Tennessee isn't the only SEC school that has heavily flirted with Johnson within the last couple of weeks.

Give Givler of BuckeyeGrove.com credit for having a sense of humor about the whole ordeal. On Sunday, after finding out that Johnson did go to Tennessee, tweeted, "I may have been in Delaware, Tennessee or Colorado this weekend. I'm not really sure anywhere where I was (sic)." And later, "Not sure if I've been covering recruiting the last 10 days or just playing Where's Waldo."

If there are two top uncommitted recruits that UGA felt really good about for signing day, it would be 5-star OT Laremy Tunsil and junior college DT Toby Johnson.

Now there's a little concern about Tunsil after his official visit to Ole Miss this past weekend.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pounder from Lake City, Fla., told DawgNation that he was "confused" after the recruiting trip to Ole Miss. He was joined on the trip by a star-studded cast of recruits, including 5-star WR Laquon Treadwell (who has committed to the Rebels) and undisputed No. 1-ranked DE Robert Nkemdiche (who is believed to be favoring Ole Miss).

"I mean Ole Miss has been near the top, too," Tunsil told the website. "But after I went down there, it made them go up a little bit. They are even with Georgia and Alabama."

What's really interesting about Tunsil's situation is that UGA appears to be using the same "high risk, high reward" strategy that it employed with Isaiah Crowell two years ago. In other words, there doesn't appear to be a backup plan if the Bulldogs whiff on Tunsil.

Meanwhile, Toby Johnson still lists UGA as his leader, but is making Bulldogs nervous by attempting to take official visits to both Mississippi State and Auburn later this week. His best connection to Auburn is Rodney Garner, the new defensive line coach who recruited him for the Bulldogs before switching jobs.

All of Vanderbilt's recruiting drama this past week surrounded trying to find a running back, the only hole in the Commodores' class of 2013 commitments.

That hole was filled when 5-foot-10, 190-pound Gainesville, Fla., running back Rapheal Webb announced his commitment via Twitter during a visit to Vanderbilt this weekend.

Webb rushed for 2,020 yards and 28 touchdowns for Gainesville.

Coach James Franklin also has some other targets as the Commodores make their final sales pitch before high school players sign their national letters of intent on Wednesday.

Running back became an immediate need once Johnathan "Rudy" Ford of New Hope, Ala., decommitted on Monday after a lot of late interest and offers from schools such as Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee.

"When people invest a lot — and that's our players, our fans, everybody — then it hurts and you take it personal," said Franklin, who can't speak about specific recruits until they've signed. "But like everything, we take it as an opportunity to educate our kids.

"You don't want to do anything in a public forum that's going to open the possibility of embarrassing the program or embarrassing yourself. And that's me included. It's a fine line because you want people to kind of get to know you, what you are and what you're passionate about."

Bayside Academy senior linebacker/fullback Jonathan Walton appeared to have made his choice between SEC rivals Auburn and South Carolina.

The three-star Walton tweeted "looks like ill be joining @MoCamara3 at our new home!!! #gamecocknation."

The handle @MoCamara3 belongs to South Carolina linebacker commit Mohamed Camara of Cumming, Ga. Camara's twitter page also includes several congratulatory tweets about both Walton and Camara committing to South Carolina.

The 6-foot-1, 227-pound Walton committed to Penn State in December but visited Tennessee, South Carolina and Auburn in January and de-committed from the Nittany Lions late in the month.

Walton is expected to play linebacker if he chooses the Gamecocks. Auburn was looking at him as a fullback or H-back.

Why Donovahn Jones finally flipped from Mizzou to Minnesota Gophers?

QuoteDonovahn Jones committed to Missouri back in September as an athlete.

But in his heart, he always saw himself as a quarterback.

"He's always played that position," said Terry Herrod, the assistant head coach at Jones' school, Hampton (Ga.) Dutchtown.

Now, it appears Jones will play it in college, too.

On Tuesday, he de-committed from the Tigers and committed to Minnesota.
