QuoteHours before Florida was set to play No. 3 Georgia in its annual rivalry game in Jacksonville, rumors about the future of Gators head coach Jim McElwain continued to swirl.

Florida won the SEC East in each of McElwain's first two seasons, but has slipped to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the SEC in 2017. The Gators lost back-to-back home games to LSU and Texas A&M and are a two-touchdown underdog against the unbeaten Bulldogs.

McElwain has appeared unhappy in recent weeks, culminating in a bizarre sequence at his Monday press conference in which he revealed he, his family and players had received death threats. Given several opportunities throughout the week to clarify his remarks, McElwain demurred.

McElwain also dismissed a rumor he might be interested in the opening at Oregon State, which would be closer to his roots in the Northwest (McElwain grew up in Washington and owns a vacation home in Montana). But on Saturday morning, prominent sports attorney and Florida graduate Darren Heitner tweeted that McElwain might be on his way out in Gainesville.

Mac was emotional throughout presser, near tears in opening statement when talking about his players. #Gators

Jim McElwain likely to be fired because UF doesn't like him, not because of offense

QuoteBiachi Writes: "Gators will fire McElwain because of his arrogance, not his offense

"The reason UF was so angry is two-fold. First, if there were death threats to players and UF's administration did nothing to protect them, the Gators could be legally liable for a mega-million-dollar wrongful death lawsuit. Second, if McElwain exaggerated the death threats or made them up entirely, then he effectively painted UF's entire fan base as a bunch of blood-thirsty lunatics who threaten to kill their coaches and players at the first sign of adversity."

Following a 42-7 loss to Georgia on Saturday, McElwain has little to point to in the way of recent on-field product to help his fate.

A reporter asked him about the "bad look" of holding hands and laughing with his wife [all the way to the bank] on the field after the game.

McElwain said he was not good at "good optics" and reckoned that he needed to apologize for this,

too.

Football Scoop, citing unnamed sources, is reporting that Florida has fired Jim McElwain. Nothing official yet from anybody.

I've been told by a source close to the program that the Florida players have been informed.

Tip for next UF coach: UF's 66 yards passing vs. Georgia lowest since 60 yards vs. South Carolina in 2014. Will Muschamp fired next day

The very best thing about the McElwain firing is that we never have to see this Belk ad again.

You know what's kind of nuts? Less than a month ago, Jim McElwain was 16-3 in the SEC.

Lyell: Few saw Jim McElwain's other side at CSU

QuoteMcElwain did a lot of good in his three seasons as CSU's football coach.

He turned around a program that had gone 3-9 three consecutive seasons, winning eight games in 2013 and 10 in 2014. He recruited many of the Rams' top players this season — quarterback Nick Stevens, running backs Dalyn Dawkins and Izzy Matthews, receiver Bisi Johnson, and linebackers Josh Watson and Tre Thomas.

But he also displayed the kind of arrogance here that was at least as responsible for his firing at Florida as the Gators' 3-4 record this season.

Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said as much at a news conference Sunday evening.

"This (decision) is more than just wins and losses," Stricklin said. "I'll just leave it at that."

McElwain has a way of rubbing a lot of people the wrong way. There's an arrogance about him that overshadows the humble upbringing and Montana roots he so often evokes in an effort to relate to the common man.
