Jordan Scarlett, 3 others reinstated to Florida football team

QuoteRunning back Jordan Scarlett is among four players who have been reinstated to the Florida football team after being suspended following credit card fraud charges last fall.

Scarlett, a rising senior who sat out the entire 2017 season, has enrolled in classes and will participate in team activities this spring, the school announced Tuesday. Joining him are wide receiver Rick Wells and linebackers James Houston and Ventrell Miller, all freshmen in 2017.

"All of our players understand the standards and expectations we have of them to be members of the Florida football program,'' Florida coach Dan Mullen said in a brief statement.

A fifth player -- defensive lineman Keivonnis Davis -- suffered severe injuries in a scooter accident last fall. He is enrolled in classes at Florida this spring, but his football future remains uncertain.

Four other players involved in the fraud scandal at Florida last fall will not return. Star wide receiver Antonio Callaway has elected to enter the 2018 NFL draft, while three others -- offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort and defensive lineman Richer Desir-Jones and Jordan Smith -- have announced plans to transfer (Desir-Jones is reportedly headed to a Kansas junior college; Telfort and Smith's destinations are unknown).

Florida AD Scott Stricklin finally comments on decision to reinstate RB Jordan Scarlett, other suspended players

QuoteGAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin met with reporters Saturday before the Gators' men's basketball game to discuss his new role on the College Football Playoff selection committee and other topics.

One of those matters was Florida's decision to reinstate suspended football players Jordan Scarlett, Rick Wells, Ventrell Miller and James Houston back into the football program. The players had been indefinitely suspended since August along with five other teammates for their involvement in credit card fraud.

Once the matter got through the legal process and university level, Stricklin was involved in the decision along with new football coach Dan Mullen.

"Obviously, there was several processes that [were] outside of our realm that had to play out, and we were able to get information from those processes to use in making our determination. And then we looked at every case on an individual basis," Stricklin said Saturday, commenting on the matter for the first time. "And then we pulled some stuff that had nothing to do with that particular situation, why they were suspended. Such as, how did these people handle themselves in the interim while they were suspended — did they go to class, how did they do academically, did they go to study hall, did they take care of their responsibilities and carry themselves in a way that seems like they're somebody who wants to do right and be a productive part of the program?

"So the individuals that are back are the ones that I believe deserve that opportunity. To a man, they'll tell you they made a mistake, and in life it's how you respond to mistakes a lot of times that kind of determine what you're made out of. So I think those young men have a great opportunity and I think they'll take advantage of it."

Four of the nine suspended players left the university on their own, with wide receiver Antonio Callaway declaring for the NFL draft and offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort and defensive linemen Jordan Smith and Richerd Desir-Jones announcing plans to transfer. Additionally, defensive end Keivonnis Davis continues to recover from a serious non-football injury sustained in a scooter accident last fall.

The other four — headlined by Scarlett, the Gators' starting running back prior to the suspension — were reinstated a week and a half ago.
