Nick Saban pulls a #tbt to reflect on last year's approach to the College Football Playoffs http://ow.ly/W22En

QuoteAlabama's the only team who has been here before.

The only repeat playoff team in college football, it took a few lessons from Round 1. The mental approach is different this time, Nick Saban and players said. Last year, it wasn't real good.

That month between winning the SEC title and losing to Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl semifinal was a minefield of distractions and privilege, they said. It feels different in the buildup to the Dec. 31 Cotton Bowl with No. 3 Michigan State.

"We certainly didn't do a good job last year," Saban said. "I felt like our players did not approach the game like a playoff game. They approached it more like a bowl game, which was obviously not our intention, not what we tried to sell to them as far as what they needed to do. I think they felt a little entitled when they won the SEC championship and just didn't really want to ― look this is a new season."

QuoteCollege Football Playoff has overstepped its bounds. Even if many of us can't think of anything we'd rather do on New Year's Eve.

The sport is straying from its lane and kicking dirt on Dick Clark's grave, offering the play clock as an alternative countdown to the ball dropping in Times Square.

It's the arrogance and thoughtlessness that irks me. The notion that college football is such a powerful drug in American culture that we'll alter traditions and cancel plans because we can't help ourselves.

This year, in Greater Lansing and around Michigan, the college football power brokers are probably right — we can't help ourselves. We don't want to. Michigan State playing Alabama in a national semifinal in primetime on New Year's Eve is something special. Something unique.

And while it surely has caused a few logistical headaches for venues and disagreements among couples and between friends, it's also created an opportunity for a memorable night.

Give it a couple of years.

The CFP semifinal ratings were so bad, SI compared it to New Coke. Oh, but NYE games are here to stay. Dumb. http://www.si.com/more-sports/2016/01/03/college-football-playoff-semifinals-ratings-colleen-dominguez-lawsuit ...

QuoteESPN's vice president of programming and acquisitions and one of the network's point people on the deal with the CFP, told SI.com on Saturday there are no immediate plans to ask the CFP to reconsider the New Years Eve playoff plan. He said he did speak with Hancock after the ratings came out but preferred to keep that conversation private. Ben-Hanan said he learned of the viewership numbers on Friday morning when he and other ESPN execs received an email from the company's research department.

"Watching the games unfold live, certainly we had an expectation because the games were not competitive late that it would hurt us," Ben-Hanan said. "I would say I was not surprised by the numbers when I saw them. We knew they would be down and certainly hoped they would not be as down as they turned out to be. [Michigan State] Being down 38-0 and competing against New Years Eve programming, that was not good luck from a TV ratings perspective."

Don't kill Ben-Hanan here. ESPN likely has no contractual provisions to rectify this disaster. Hancock, a sports political operative of the highest order, and his crew ultimately have the final decision on the date of the semifinals. They are the rights owner of the property; ESPN is merely a rights holder. ESPN's only hope is to prod Hancock and his suits into acting with less self-interest. (Good luck, son.) Ben-Hanan said ESPN officials felt better about the overall bowl numbers after the overnights came in on all the New Years Eve Six bowls. Those bowls (Peach Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl Classic, Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl) averaged a 7.1 overnight rating, with four of the six games experiencing increased ratings. The 7.1 overnight rating is down 13 percent from last season's 8.2. "Of course you always want to be up but down 13 percent is a little bit different than after we were at the semifinals when we were staring at 30 percent-plus [down]," Ben-Hanan said.

Chris Donnelly was wrapping up a standout Alabama career when it was time to move out of the dorms and into an off-campus house.

The senior safety in Gene Stallings' program decided to live with a former teammate who now served as a graduate assistant. The catch? The former teammate's mother was moving in, too.

That graduate assistant was Dabo Swinney

QuoteErvil Swinney, Dabo's father, battled alcoholism and struggled after a family business went south. As Ervil fought his demons, Dabo and his mother were on their own.

It was Dabo's dream to play football at Alabama but the only solution to make it work financially was for Carol to live with him for the majority of his college career. It was no one's ideal scenario but the proud Pelham native didn't let it bring him down.

"He wasn't embarrassed about it; he wasn't ashamed about it," Donnelly told AL.com. "In fact, he was like 'This is the card I was dealt and I'm going to enjoy my college experience; I'm going to enjoy my moment.'

"His mom was just the sweetest thing. She would cook for us on Monday nights. So we'd come over to the apartment and eat and hang out. She was a great cook."

Carol started the Monday night cooking tradition in little Apartment 81 in the Fountainbleau Apartments that no longer exist. She was always cooking in bulk, not knowing how many of Dabo's teammates would cram themselves into the tiny two-bedroom place for a home-cooked dinner. Donnelly fondly remembers a pasta dish she'd frequently make.

It was at Apartment 81 that the unusual living arrangement began in Tuscaloosa during Dabo's sophomore year.

It was an era before cost of attendance payments.

SEC Film Room: How Alabama can bottle up Clemson's top red-zone threat http://sec.news/1RoKD0R

QuoteHow will Alabama defend Clemson's top red-zone target, tight end Jordan Leggett?

Clemson's read-option attack only boosts Leggett's potential usage in the red zone. The Tigers don't do much substituting on offense due to their no-huddle strategy which means Leggett's role cannot be purely receiving. Since he's also used as a blocker, moving up into traffic like in the play above confused the defense and allowed him to find open space as the defense fell for quarterback Deshaun Watson's fake.

I don't expect Alabama to have these kind of miscues simply because the Tide's defense does not require its players to all focus in on run or pass; they are good enough to split the defense knowing the front six or seven can handle the run and the secondary can handle the pass with little initial help from the other group. This avoids defensive players lining up in mismatches, a key part of why receiving tight ends are often thought of as X-factors...

New Year's Eve was a disaster for the College Football Playoff and ad buyers want money back: http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/currency/media-buyers-espn-negotiating-20m-bowl-game-ad-makegoods/146777 ...

QuoteDespite the efforts of the College Football Playoff committee and some media outlets downplaying the financial hit ESPN took by being forced to televise the two national championship semi-final games on New Year's Eve, media buyers say the network owes upwards of $20 million in ad makegoods for ratings shortfalls for the two games.

ESPN may have gotten a bit greedy when setting its ratings estimates and offering higher guarantee levels to advertisers for the two games, knowing audiences might not flock to their TV sets, despite the optimism of the CFP committee. However, advertisers are concerned about next season's potential audience levels for the games, which will also be televised on New Year's Eve. Even if the ratings guarantees by ESPN are set lower, advertisers would prefer the games be moved to New Year's Day or even on consecutive primetime nights, exclusive of New Year's Eve, when more people would likely watch.

But CFP committee officials are on record as adamantly supporting the continued airing of the playoff series games on New Year's Eve as scheduled, which will occur in seven of the remaining 10 years of the 12-year original deal. And that position has been taken even after the 36% combined ratings decline for the two games was disclosed.

Sugar Don't Bite

QuoteWith talk swirling about how the College Football Playoff can improve this year's dismal TV ratings for the national semifinals, a number of suggestions have emerged.

One is to sandwich the semifinals around the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day in years when the semis aren't in the Rose and Sugar bowls, thus potentially moving the Sugar out of its traditional Jan. 1 prime-time slot.

However, Saturday, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey said his league and the Big 12, which have agreed to send their champions or highest-ranked teams to the Sugar, remain committed to keeping the bowl on New Year's night.

"There's not only a commitment," Sankey said at CFP media day. "We have a contract."

With the Sugar having hosted a CFP semifinal last year, this was the first time the game hosted the so-called "Champions Bowl" between the SEC and Big 12. Ole Miss romped past Oklahoma State 48-20.

"The victory is always nice," Sankey said. "But standing on the floor of the Superdome, which was full, with a lot of energy, it was a great reward for both teams and a great evening for both teams."

OU prez David Boren was 'very frustrated' Big 12 'let Louisville get away' #collegefootball http://wp.me/p14QTT-1wUs

Quote"You know, I was for adding Louisville (when the Big 12 instead added West Virginia and TCU in 2012)," he said. "I obviously did not prevail, and they have now gone into another conference and they're not available now. But they'd have been a good fit.

"... Boy, I was very frustrated, for example, that we let Louisville get away and we let other schools get away. Former Ohio State players didn't like watching #Alabama's Cotton Bowl blowout, wanted a chance at the Tide: http://ow.ly/XDY6E

QuoteThe Ohio State tight end was in his Arizona hotel room the night before playing Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, but a game in Dallas caused irritation.

Once he saw Alabama seize control from Michigan State, Vannett had to turn off the Cotton Bowl. The 2014 national champion Buckeyes had come so close to meeting the Crimson Tide in the semifinals for a second straight year. So to see another Big Ten team take a 38-0 beating didn't sit well with Vannett and the other former Ohio State players participating in this week's Senior Bowl in Mobile.

"It kinda made us look bad," Vannett said.

One disappointing November afternoon was all that kept the Buckeyes from a rematch with Alabama. The same Spartans that were whipped by Alabama upset the defending champs 17-14 on Nov. 21 in a game they didn't lead until a last-second, 41-yard field goal. The fact it happened so late in the year, Michigan State was the Buckeyes' only ranked opponent and it effectively knocked them from the Big Ten title race doomed hopes of a repeat championship.

Did #Clemson dominate #Alabama in the national championship game? One Clemson player thought so: http://ow.ly/XGZ0b

Morale (sic) victory for proper usage of "dominated"

QuoteCharone Peake laughed a little recalling a moment from Tuesday's Senior Bowl practice in Fairhope. Just two weeks after meeting as opponents on college football's grandest stage, the former Clemson receiver is teammates with five Alabama players.

"It was weird today, Jake Coker was throwing me the ball while Cyrus Jones was guarding me," Peake said with a grin. "So that was kind of weird. We're all cool about it. It was just a game at the end of the day. We're all friends."

But there are still a few lingering feelings left over from that night outside Phoenix.

"We felt like we dominated the game," Peake said. "Those couple two or three plays took over and kinda overshadowed our play. The scoreboard didn't show it but I felt like we dominated the game."

t looks like the Big 12 will not have enough time to put together a football championship game for the end of the 2016 season.

Oklahoma president David Boren said Thursday he doubts the Big 12 will conduct a scheduled vote next week to approve a conference football title game.

QuoteBoren said: "I would emphasize: I don't think the Big 12 Conference is in any danger of falling apart. I don't. There's no imminent danger of that, nor is there anybody even considering that, I don't think. Our first choice by far in every possibility for us is to stay in the Big 12 Conference and enhance it, make it stronger, make it better."

Boren also continued to rail against the Longhorn Network, viewing it as a major roadblock for the Big 12 setting up its own.
