Something the spring game showed and this new coach may not fix

I believe our 1's can play with anyone.  The spring game showed a great team fielded with the first team on the field.  Our second teams is still another year or two behind (of previous patterned success).  Oh wait, things are all going to be changed now.  We hired a coach that can not build the depth that has been being built in the past couple of years.  We can not afford a single gap in recruitment and talent levels to sustain any type of success like we have in the past couple years.  I do not, and can not, understand the reasoning behind this hire.  Can anyone help?  I think this hurts more than just this year.  I think this decision will still be a daunting problem 3 seasons from now. 

Does anyone else think that Hiring John L Smith for 10 months will not create a huge recruiting void and possibly create turmoil among the current staff?
